1. Let's contact our local and state representatives and ask them to make statements speaking out against white supremacy, such as what occurred in Charlotte.
Also, from Rogan's list: Republican leaders have been more blatant this past week in their criticism of Trump in the wake of Charlottesville: https://apnews.com/a6f078b98fc14230b269e0edd600c6db/GOP-doubts-and-anxieties-about-Trump-burst-into-the-open Please stay in touch with your own Republican MoC about your expectations of them at this time.
2. Congressman Adam Schiff things the White House needs "more adults in the room," and is now openly questioning the president's competence. https://www.bostonglobe.com/news/politics/2017/08/20/trump-has-serious-issues-that-aren-going-away-schiff-says/Jj4DRNsmuRn0EPsvgFn50O/story.html
3. This evening, at 8pm CT, the president is making a speech promoting his new strategy in Afghanistan. http://www.cnn.com/2017/08/20/politics/james-mattis-donald-trump-afghanistan/index.html
4. Don't forget your Republican party job evaluation.

Friday 8/18 Call to Action
Friday
1. Trump’s Words Have Consequences.
This news story was posted yesterday by a valued TPOM member. I think it bears repeating. Last weekend, Joe F. Fernkes, 61, of Willmar threw a severed pig’s foot at a Somali-American merchant selling vegetables at a local farmer’s market. (Islamic law forbids contact with pigs.) Mr. Fernkes was caught on film and had been charged with a misdemeanor. Actions like this are not a misdemeanor, they fit better in the category of hate crimes. Read more here: http://www.startribune.com/charge-man-curses-somali-merc…/…/

Unfortunately, hate crimes against Muslims are on the rise in Minnesota and the rest of the United States. http://www.twincities.com/…/bloomington-explosion-part-of-…/
This makes hateful, racist comments from Trump even more egregious.
This makes hateful, racist comments from Trump even more egregious.
In a tweet yesterday, Trump instructed his followers to remember the example of General John J. Pershing. This was in reference to an untrue story Trump shared on the campaign trail in February, 2016. Trump explained that General Pershing shot Muslims in the Philippines with bullets covered in pig’s blood. https://www.washingtonpost.com/…/trump-recycles-discredit…/…
It is unbelievable that the President of the United States is spreading such inflammatory (and false) information! His words negatively affect the lives of innocent people. Trump does not represent America’s values and this is never acceptable in the great state of Minnesota. Today, lets call our representative and senators and tell them to censure Trump. This goes double if your representative has an “R” after his name. (That means you, Lewis, Emmer and Paulsen.)
2. Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch
Justice Gorsuch, who was appointed by Trump to the Supreme Court, will be delivering the keynote address for the “Defending Freedom Luncheon” that will be held at Trump International Hotel later this month. While Supreme Court justices are not prohibited from making speeches to political groups, the fact that Gorsuch is speaking at a hotel owned by Trump a few weeks before hearing arguments on Trump’s travel ban seems like a bad idea.

Wednesday 8/16 Call to Action
Wednesday
This is the most difficult call to action that I have written since I started this last February. I am not equipped to adequately cover the gravity of what happened yesterday. Please keep that in mind as I bumble through this.

1. Trump’s Infrastructure Press Conference (where he gives a thumbs up to racists, Nazis and white supremacists)
Here is the complete version: https://youtu.be/PqGkvjHL-Ds
Here are the highlights (lowlights) https://www.nytimes.com/…/trump-press-conference-charlottes…
As Richard Wolffe said in this article, we can now be certain that Trump is a neo-Nazi sympathizer. https://www.theguardian.com/…/the-president-of-the-united-s…
Just for the record, according to this article Robert E. Lee was opposed to Confederate monuments. http://www.pbs.org/…/robert-e-lee-opposed-confederate-mon…/…
If you want to get a sense of what really happened in Charlottesville, watch this video. Warning: it’s graphic. https://youtu.be/P54sP0Nlngg
It’s not like all of this started this weekend in Charlottesville, Trump and his administration have been quietly feeding this ultra-right base for months.
Trump has been busy appointing ultra-right judges to our appeals courts:https://twitter.com/thenormanlear/status/897257293116354561
Trump froze funding for counter-right wing extremism programshttp://www.independent.co.uk/…/charlottesville-latest-donal…
Remember when Trump called to change the Counter Violent Extremism program to Countering Islamic Extremism program? https://www.reuters.com/…/us-usa-trump-extremists-program-e…
Just recently, the Department of Justice asked for 1.3 million IP addresses from visitors of an anti-Trump website. http://thehill.com/…/346544-dreamhost-claims-doj-requesting…
Let’s not forget that Fox News, and specifically Tucker Carlson have been feeding propaganda to the white nationalist base.https://twitter.com/gaywonk/status/897615685379117056 You too Alex Jones.
Why am I giving you all these links? Because I want you to be well equipped when you call your representative and senators today. Today should be the day that their phones do not stop ringing. Have they specifically denounced the president? How are they going to put words into action? This is not acceptable and the president blew it big time. If our members of Congress (MoC’s) don’t act today we will remember at the polls.
You know who else needs to go? Steve Bannon, Steven Miller, and Sebastian Gorka. Let your MoC’s know that too. http://www.cbsnews.com/…/minority-groups-in-congress-call-…/
Here are some talking points from Indivisible Guide to help you on your phone calls. https://www.indivisibleguide.com/…/members-congress-enough…/

Tuesday 8/15 Call to Action
Tuesday
The horrible, tragic events that occurred this weekend in Charlottesville have been a shocking wake up call for many of us. (I also think many were aware of this undercurrent of hate in America and have been trying to warn us). This has been an especially difficult pill for me to swallow since the I called Charlottesville home for four years while I attended the University of Virginia. This is not the legacy I want for this town I hold dear. This is not the America I want my kids to grow up in. Now is the time that we work to turn this ship around. Wahoowa.

1. Trump’s American Manufacturing Council
Yesterday, the CEO’s of Merck, Under Armour, and Intel resigned from Trump’s American Manufacturing Council. The AMC was created in January as part of Trump’s push to create jobs in America.https://www.whitehouse.gov/…/president-trump-announces-manu…
The CEO of Merck, Kenneth Frazier, the only African American on the panel, was the first to resign. His resignation was met with some salty tweets from Trump. The other two CEO’s resignations were met with silence from the president. I commend these men for standing up to Trump’s milk toast response to the events in Charlottesville and the undercurrent of hate that exists in the Oval Office.

Here is a list of the other companies that are on the AMC. Read here:http://www.businessinsider.com/trump-manufacturing-council-…
Did you notice that 3M is on that list? The CEO of 3M, Inge Thulin declined to comment. 3M is a Minnesota company and I think you would agree that hateful behavior does not represent our beautiful state. Today, lets focus on Mr. Thulin and 3M and tell them Minnesota wants them to resign from Trump’s ACM.

3. Trump’s Facebook
The Trump campaign spent most of their money on their Facebook presence. Watch this BBC video about how Theresa Hong, Project Alamo and Cambridge Analytica used people’s personal information and preferences to tailor Trump’s posts to get the best response. Also, how involved Facebook executive were in this. This is a disturbing video. It helps explain why the GOP voted to overturn privacy protections for internet users and why Trump’s voter fraud commission want voter data.

I am not sure yet what to do with this information. Let’s put a tack in it and save it for another post. Any ideas?

August 14 Call to Action
1. I don't always read a lot of news on the weekends, but it was hard to miss the situation in Charlottesville. Indivisible guide has some information on what we can ask our Members of Congress. There's also a Resist White Supremacy event at McCollum's office tomorrow (link in the Out and About section). https://www.indivisibleguide.com/resource/members-congress-enough-respond-charlottesville-terrorist-attack/
2. One of the biggest ways the administration will be able to have a long-term effect on American Democracy is through the appointment of far right judges. One of those is Judge David Stras. Senators have traditionally been able to block judicial nominees to their own state, through the "blue slip" process. "Stras fits the mold of an ultra-right-wing conservative who will be a good friend to big corporations, the wealthy and the powerful, at the expense of everyday Americans." Let's call our senators and ask them to use the blue slip process to oppose Stras. http://www.startribune.com/minnesota-justice-david-stras-trump-s-pick-for-eighth-circuit-ejnoys-broad-swath-of-support/421642283/
3. Let's call our House members to support the Colorectal Cancer Screening Act of 2017. The Ambulatory Surgery Center Association (ASCA) describes the bill this way: "Under current law, Medicare waives coinsurance and deductibles for colonoscopies. When a polyp is discovered and removed, the procedure is reclassified as therapeutic for Medicare billing purposes and patients are required to pay the coinsurance. This bill would eliminate unexpected costs for Medicare beneficiaries when a polyp is discovered and removed, ensuring that unexpected copays do not deter a patient from having the screening performed. If your representative isn't Lewis, your representative is a co-sponsor. If you're representative isn't Lewis, you know what to do.

1. Voter Suppression
Trump’s game of nuclear chicken with North Korea is understandably taking the top headlines in the papers. Don’t forget, while this is happening, Trump’s voter suppression commission is still busy trying to take away Americans’ votes.
The members of the commission, Kris Kobach, (secretary of state of Kentucky), J Kenneth Blackwell (former sec of state of Ohio) and Hans Von Spakowsky (former Justice Department official) are all known for their past histories of voter obstruction.

The Anti-Voter Suppression Act (S. 1547/H.R. 3214) has been introduced in both the House and the Senate to nullify Trump’s executive order establishing the commission and to prohibit any of our money from being used to investigate the non-issue of voter fraud.

Wednesday 8/9 Call to Action
Wednesday
1. Since it is August recess for our representatives and senators, today we will focus on the actions we can take to get them to take notice. We have an opportunity to make a real impact in the next few weeks.
Ask your congressperson for a town hall. This will be easier for some districts than others. If you are lucky enough to live in a district where town hall meetings already take place, you can focus your time on asking Senator Franken for a town hall meeting. Some congressmen are using the fact that Franken has not had an official town hall as an excuse to not hold their own. Besides, a town hall with Senator Franken would be fantastic!

Rise Stronger has prepared a document that gives good questions to ask during a town hall meeting. Check it out here:https://risestronger.org/newsroom/peoplesaugustrecessguide.
Do you need some talking points for current topics of concern? These would be helpful for phone calls to your representative. Check out this resource here:

Are you stuck at home? Does you representative refuse to have any public events? Are you bursting with great ideas? Try writing a letter to your local paper. Here is a resource to make sure your pen is indeed mightier than the sword. https://www.indivisibleguide.com/…/writing-opeds-make-diff…/
2. Trump International Hotel
Check out this fascinating piece from the Washington Post about the goings on at the Trump International Hotel. Here’s a quote from the article: “This is nothing Washington has ever seen. For the first time in presidential history, a profit-making venture touts the name of a U.S. president in its gold signage. And every cup of coffee served, every fundraiser scheduled, every filet mignon ordered feeds the revenue of the Trump family’s private business.”

The Trumps lease this building from the General Services Administration. It seems odd that this set up is acceptable. If you have the time, it might be nice to call and ask the GSA about that.

You can ask your representative their thoughts on this as well.
