Tuesday 6/19 Call to Action

Tuesday
1. Families Belong Together
I can’t and I won’t stop talking until something is done to help the innocent children separated from their families at the U. S. borders. There has been growing outcry from mostly Democrats but some Republicans as well (including all the living first ladies https://abcnews.go.com/…/ladies-speak-family-separat…/story…). The Trump administration’s response is to lie and to blame.
“I hate the children being taken away. The Democrats have to change their law. That’s their law.”
— President Trump, in remarks to reporters at the White House, June 15, 2018
“We have the worst immigration laws in the entire world. Nobody has such sad, such bad and actually, in many cases, such horrible and tough — you see about child separation, you see what’s going on there.”
— Trump, in remarks at the White House, June 18, 2018
“Because of the Flores consent decree and a 9th Circuit court decision, ICE can only keep families detained together for a very short period of time.”
— Attorney General Jeff Sessions, in a speech in Bozeman, Mont., June 7, 2018
“It’s the law, and that’s what the law states.”
— White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, at a news briefing, June 14, 2018
“We do not have a policy of separating families at the border. Period.”
— Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, on Twitter, June 17, 2018
It’s strange to behold Trump distancing himself from the zero-tolerance policy (“the Democrats gave us that law”) while Nielsen claims it doesn’t exist (“it’s not a policy”) and Sessions defends it in speech after speech.
Why is this happening? Many argue that the president is using these poor children as a negotiating tool to force Democrats to pass a hard-line immigration bill that will fund the border wall, end the visa lottery, and make it impossible for families to sponsor anyone other than very close relatives. The Trump administration is doing its best to divert the focus of the atrocities they are committing and spread false ideas to cover their butts. Unfortunately, many are falling for it. Check out this article to arm yourself with the facts and then continue to call your members of Congress and demand action. Anyone who doesn’t speak out against and take measures to stop this policy is complicit.

Do not doubt for a second the damage Trump’s policy is doing to these innocent children. The trauma could have lasting negative effects for these kids. Many parents are separated from their children with no clue as to where their kids have gone. Some parents have been deported to their country of origin without their kids. What is the end game in all of this?
Pro Publica has managed to get a sound recording of some children held in one of Trump’s camps. This audio is heart wrenching, but I encourage you to listen so that you understand. https://www.propublica.org/…/children-separated-from-parent…
Dr. Colleen Kraft, current president of The American Academy of Pediatrics, visited a Texas facility for children aged 12 and under after her colleagues told her she needed to see what was happening. Officials scolded "a group of 5-year-olds for playing around in their cage, telling them to settle down. There are no toys or books." One boy was "quiet, clutching a piece of paper that was a photocopy of his mother's ID card" "IN THEIR CAGE" Officials are not allowed to hold or comfort the children in their care. https://www.apnews.com/9794de32d39d4c6f89fbefaea3780769

American Promise Act (H.R. 4253), which offers protections for those with Temporary Protected Status (TPS) or Deferred Enforced Departure (DED,
ASPIRE-TPS Act of 2017 (H.R. 4384), which would allow residents with TPS who can prove “extreme hardship” to apply for a green card.

2. Opioid Legislation
Thanks to http://mn02congresswatch.org/ for providing weekly updates on Congress’ schedule. This week is chock full of opioid legislation. Instead of wasting time on voting for individual bills to help citizens with opioid addiction, remind your members of Congress that it would it would be much more effective and efficient to provide universal healthcare.

3. Supreme Court Rules to Leave Gerrymandering in Place
The U.S. Supreme Court punted Monday on its biggest decision of its term so far. The justices had been expected to rule on the limits of partisan gerrymandering.
Instead, the court sidestepped the major issues on technical grounds, sending the issue back to the lower courts for further examination. In order for our country to thrive, we need fair elections. That is simply not possible when gerrymandering is allowed to exist. Tell Congress to pass the Redistricting Reform Act (H.R. 1102) and set up independent commissions to draw fair maps. Put the people in charge, not politicians! Click here:https://www.ournext4years.org/videos/psa026

There will be a Q&A with representatives from St Croix Valley Women’s Alliance, Indivisible North Metro, CD2 Action, and Indivisible MN03.
Turnout in the TC metro is definitely important, especially the state-wide races, but the flippable suburban districts are arguably where this November will be won or lost. If you are in a solid blue district, come find out how you can help drive the vote in the purple and red districts!

There are a myriad of ways to help local candidates. Phone banking and door knocking are the obvious ones. But if the thought of talking to strangers shivers your timbers, there are other options as well. Consider donating money, food, supplies, or your expertise to a campaign. Write post cards to voters. March in parades. Be part of a crew that holds signs on highway overpasses. In the next few weeks, I will present opportunities to do all of these things. Be sure to sign up and be part of the blue wave that coming in November.
This handy article lists all the Minnesota candidates running for a House seat in November. Adopt one (or two, or more) and commit yourself to creating a wave of successful campaigns. Check it out: https://www.minnpost.com/…/who-s-running-minnesota-house-20…

Young people—18-29-year-olds—have a notoriously low voter turnout rate, especially in mid-term elections. Cap, Gown, Vote! https://capgownvote.org/has a toolkit to empower young people themselves to remedy that. Let’s check it out and spread the word.
