Wednesday 10/17 Call to Action

Wednesday
As has become the usual, the news from Washington DC is appalling. Ethics and democratic norms are being chipped away day by day. The best and perhaps only way to solve this is to elect better leaders in November. Please commit now to being part of the solution. In three weeks, after elections are over, will you look back and know that you did everything you could to help? If the answer is no, get yourself to a campaign website and volunteer ASAP!
Keith Ellison
It is imperative that we help Keith Ellison get elected as Attorney General in Minnesota. In light of the state of federal government and the Supreme Court, we have to have an Attorney General who will protect our rights at the state level. Rep. Ellison’s opponent, Doug Wardlow has made it clear that he would take away a woman’s right to make decisions about her own healthcare, further marginalize the LGBTQ community, and cast out Democrats from Minnesota’s judicial branch.
I have to admit, at first I was wary of supporting Rep. Ellison. Thankfully, last week CD2Action attended a meeting with Ellison and posted some video highlights on their page. Take the time to watch the congressman explain his ideas. I bet that like me, you will feel much more confident putting your support behind his campaign. Once you do, be sure to share your support on social media. The stakes are very high in this one.

Minnesota Supreme Court
Ah, those pesky judges on the back of the ballot. It’s hard enough to keep up with the candidates on the front side! Make sure you pay special attention to the race between Margaret Chutich and Michelle MacDonald for Minnesota’s Supreme Court. Chutich was appointed by Governor Dayton in 2016. She is well liked by her peers and her community, and is seen as a fair and effective judge. On the other hand, MacDonald had her law license suspended for 60 days pointing to professional misconduct allegations dating back to 2013. She wants to abolish Minnesota’s family court system and she was involved in a messy drunk driving case where she refused to submit a breath test and obstructed the legal process during her traffic stop. This is easy, mark your ballot for Margaret Chutich and tell others to do so as well.

Goodbye Social Security and Medicare
As predicted when the GOP’s rammed it’s terrible Tax Bill through Congress, the Republicans now want to go after our Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid to offset the huge debt/deficit created by providing the top 1% of earners a tax cut windfall.
In an interview, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell blamed rising federal deficits and debt on a bipartisan unwillingness to contain spending on Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. First of all, McConnell is trying to sell this as a bipartisan problem. Secondly, McConnell is continually calling these programs entitlements even though the majority of American workers spend their lives putting money in the kitty. Do McConnell’s comments make you angry? The best and only way to stop him is to get your friends and neighbors to the polls. Are you active on social media? This makes a fantastic argument against voting for Republicans in November. Spread it around!

Minnesota Attorney General Lori Swanson Sues Insulin Makers
Here’s an example of why we need strong leaders in Minnesota. The cost of synthetic insulin, a lifesaving medication for people with diabetes, has sky-rocketed making it unaffordable for many Minnesotans. In fact, last May a 26 year-old man died because he could not afford to purchase insulin for himself. (https://www.mprnews.org/…/soaring-insulin-prices-prompt-pro…) Attorney General Lori Swanson is suing three manufacturers of synthetic insulin for allegedly price-gouging people with diabetes. AG Swanson claims that three insulin manufacturers have been engaging in a scheme to raise their prices so they can offer the best rebates to pharmacy benefit managers. Patients who are uninsured or have high deductible health plans are most affected by these exorbitant prices. Give AG Swanson a call and thank her for her work. Then go right back up to the top of this page and help Keith Ellison get elected for AG in November.

All three branches of our government are help by the GOP. All three branches of our government are chugging along on the Trump train. This should terrify you. We have got to get people to the polls in November if we ever hope to contain this catastrophe. Read Robert Reich’s opinion about it here then do something to help make positive change. If you haven’t volunteered to help a campaign yet, what the heck are you waiting for? This is the time to get busy!! https://www.salon.com/…/16/containing-the-catastrophe_part…/
