Thursday 5/21 Call to Action

Thursday 5/21

1. Migrant families
Trump has signed an executive order on his own zero tolerance policy and has blamed Congress for his administration’s position on separating families to enforce the law. All this executive order does is keep kids in cages with their families, indefinitely. We are at a critical point where it is dire to get these infants and children back with their families. Kids are being moved to foster care in the middle of the night.

Children are being given psychotropic drugs against their will. This is not ok!

Some of the airlines are speaking out and refusing to transport immigrant children separated from their families for government. It might be a good idea to tweet at them if they’ve taken a stance or not.
Some flight attendants are refusing to flight assignments that ICE and migrant children are aboard.

It is not lost on me that my children are safely in my care, and that is a privilege. That they were born at the “right place”, at the “right” time, and have the “right” skin colors. I cannot fathom what these migrant families are going through. We need to continue to be loud about our outrage in every way possible. Call, email, tweet, march, donate, VOTE!!!

Mark your calendars for the nationwide protest taking place on June 30th. There are multiple Minnesota options now. https://act.moveon.org/event/families-belong-together/search/?action_id=265051484&akid=.36784918.Wr1Ykp&ar=1&rd=1

Want to do more than protest and make phone calls? Donate $$ to the organizations at the front line trying to help these families.

2. Ronald Mortensen
Today would be a good day to call and ask our Senators to reject the nomination of Ronald Mortensen to lead the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration. Ronald Mortensen is an anti-immigration extremist and would be in charge of refugee protection, the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration. Under this current administration I’m not surprised that someone such as this has been nominated, but we want a humanitarian diplomat, someone who reflects our spirit and compassion of welcoming the world’s most vulnerable people.

3. Be Part of The Blue Wave
Have you signed up to help a local campaign yet? There are a myriad of ways to help local candidates. Phone banking and door knocking are the obvious ones. But if the thought of talking to strangers shivers your timbers, there are other options as well. Consider donating money, food, supplies, or your expertise to a campaign. Write postcards to voters. March in parades. Be part of a crew that holds signs on highway overpasses.

Wedesday 6/20 Call to Action

Wednesday
1. “Tender Age” Facilities
Last night the AP reported that babies and other very young children are being held in three facilities somewhere in Texas. Lawyers and medical providers who have visited the Rio Grande Valley shelters described play rooms of crying preschool-age children in crisis.
“Children are biologically programmed to grow best in the care of a parent figure. When that bond is broken through long and unexpected separations with no set timeline for reunion, children respond at the deepest physiological and emotional levels. Their fear triggers a flood of stress hormones that disrupt neural circuits in the brain, create high levels of anxiety, make them more susceptible to physical and emotional illness, and damage their capacity to manage their emotions, trust people, and focus their attention on age-appropriate activities.”
Keep in mind that many of these children will never be reunited with their parents.

Donald Trump will be in Duluth today to rile up his troops. Reps. 2. 2019 Budget Proposal
While we are understandably distracted by the terribleness at the border, the House GOP is busy trying to pass a budget bill that will fast track Affordable Care Act repeal, massive Medicare and Medicaid cuts, and more tax cuts. It is possible that they may vote on this as early as next week! All hands on deck. Read about the bill here and then flood your representative’s office with phone calls, emails and letters.

3. United Nations Human Rights Council
The Trump administration withdrew from the United Nations Human Rights Council on Tuesday, making good on a pledge to leave a body it accused of hypocrisy and bias against Israel. On Monday, the Council began their meeting by calling Trump’s practice of separating children from their families at our borders “unconscionable”. Perhaps that’s the real reason Trump withdrew. Condemning the move, Senator Chris Coons of Delaware, a Democrat who serves on the Foreign Relations Committee, said the decision “sends a clear message that the Trump administration does not intend to lead the world when it comes to human rights.”

Tuesday 6/19 Call to Action

Tuesday
1. Families Belong Together
I can’t and I won’t stop talking until something is done to help the innocent children separated from their families at the U. S. borders. There has been growing outcry from mostly Democrats but some Republicans as well (including all the living first ladies https://abcnews.go.com/…/ladies-speak-family-separat…/story…). The Trump administration’s response is to lie and to blame.
“I hate the children being taken away. The Democrats have to change their law. That’s their law.”
— President Trump, in remarks to reporters at the White House, June 15, 2018
“We have the worst immigration laws in the entire world. Nobody has such sad, such bad and actually, in many cases, such horrible and tough — you see about child separation, you see what’s going on there.”
— Trump, in remarks at the White House, June 18, 2018
“Because of the Flores consent decree and a 9th Circuit court decision, ICE can only keep families detained together for a very short period of time.”
— Attorney General Jeff Sessions, in a speech in Bozeman, Mont., June 7, 2018
“It’s the law, and that’s what the law states.”
— White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, at a news briefing, June 14, 2018
“We do not have a policy of separating families at the border. Period.”
— Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, on Twitter, June 17, 2018
It’s strange to behold Trump distancing himself from the zero-tolerance policy (“the Democrats gave us that law”) while Nielsen claims it doesn’t exist (“it’s not a policy”) and Sessions defends it in speech after speech.
Why is this happening? Many argue that the president is using these poor children as a negotiating tool to force Democrats to pass a hard-line immigration bill that will fund the border wall, end the visa lottery, and make it impossible for families to sponsor anyone other than very close relatives. The Trump administration is doing its best to divert the focus of the atrocities they are committing and spread false ideas to cover their butts. Unfortunately, many are falling for it. Check out this article to arm yourself with the facts and then continue to call your members of Congress and demand action. Anyone who doesn’t speak out against and take measures to stop this policy is complicit.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/…/the-facts-about-trumps-p…/…
Do not doubt for a second the damage Trump’s policy is doing to these innocent children. The trauma could have lasting negative effects for these kids. Many parents are separated from their children with no clue as to where their kids have gone. Some parents have been deported to their country of origin without their kids. What is the end game in all of this?
Pro Publica has managed to get a sound recording of some children held in one of Trump’s camps. This audio is heart wrenching, but I encourage you to listen so that you understand. https://www.propublica.org/…/children-separated-from-parent…
Dr. Colleen Kraft, current president of The American Academy of Pediatrics, visited a Texas facility for children aged 12 and under after her colleagues told her she needed to see what was happening. Officials scolded "a group of 5-year-olds for playing around in their cage, telling them to settle down. There are no toys or books." One boy was "quiet, clutching a piece of paper that was a photocopy of his mother's ID card" "IN THEIR CAGE" Officials are not allowed to hold or comfort the children in their care. https://www.apnews.com/9794de32d39d4c6f89fbefaea3780769

ASPIRE-TPS Act of 2017 (H.R. 4384), which would allow residents with TPS who can prove “extreme hardship” to apply for a green card.

2. Opioid Legislation
Thanks to http://mn02congresswatch.org/ for providing weekly updates on Congress’ schedule. This week is chock full of opioid legislation. Instead of wasting time on voting for individual bills to help citizens with opioid addiction, remind your members of Congress that it would it would be much more effective and efficient to provide universal healthcare.

3. Supreme Court Rules to Leave Gerrymandering in Place
The U.S. Supreme Court punted Monday on its biggest decision of its term so far. The justices had been expected to rule on the limits of partisan gerrymandering.
Instead, the court sidestepped the major issues on technical grounds, sending the issue back to the lower courts for further examination. In order for our country to thrive, we need fair elections. That is simply not possible when gerrymandering is allowed to exist. Tell Congress to pass the Redistricting Reform Act (H.R. 1102) and set up independent commissions to draw fair maps. Put the people in charge, not politicians! Click here:https://www.ournext4years.org/videos/psa026

Monday 6/18 Call to Action

Rudy Giuliani is dangling pardons, likely for Paul Manafort, to keep him from testifying.  This could be obstruction of justice.

1. We have to keep on top of family separation.  This differs from the Obama policy, because Obama's policy never separated children who were with their families.

2. Let's keep Scott Pruitt in mind: From Rogan's list: The ethics scandals against EPA chief Scott Pruitt keep increasing. In the latest incident, Pruitt solicited a GOP donor’s help in finding his wife a job http://thehill.com/policy/energy-environment/392021-pruitt-had-aide-gop-donors-help-wife-find-job-report. Former White House ethics chief, Walter Shaub, has gone on record to claim that Pruitt is simply unfit for public service, and now even hard-line conservatives like Fox News Commentator Laura Ingraham and Pruitt’s home-state Senator, James Inhofe are calling for his resignation. Let’s tell our MoCs to keep calling for Pruitt’s resignation. We should also contact the White House and the EPA directly (pruitt.scott@EPA.gov; https://www.facebook.com/EPA/; Twitter: @EPA) and let them know that these ethical violations are serious and unacceptable, and that Pruitt must cede leadership of the EPA.

Thursday 5/14 Call to Action

Thursday 5/14

We are living through historic times and not in a good way. There is so much badness happening and yet we won’t make a difference unless we use the power of our vote in November.
It is crucial we get the masses out to vote for better leaders and here are some reasons why:

1. Judicial nominations
Something that many of us have felt is hazardous under this administration is the record setting pace federal courts are being stacked with ultra-conservative judges. So far there has been forty two judicial nominees, Justice Gorsuch included, twenty one circuit court judges, and twenty district court judges.
“We have been aggressively working behind the scenes to ensure that qualified constitutionally conservative judges are nominated and confirmed. We are happy to report that since our last update, the U.S. Senate has nearly doubled the number of federal appellate judicial nominees confirmed since the beginning of this Administration.”
“One of the most important aspects of presidential power is the ability to nominate federal judges – judges who will determine how the Constitution is interpreted for decades to come.”
This is a very dangerous agenda.

2. The Census
Gerrymandering has been on the forefront for what many activists are targeting. Republicans are using the census as a tool to distort our elections.
“Using a citizenship question to prevent noncitizens from counting toward representation would turn one of the most important constitutional acts—the gathering of census data every 10 years—into a political weapon. The census already routinely undercounts immigrant populations, depriving their cities and states of political and economic resources. Excluding them from representation altogether would drastically curb the influence of minority populations at a time of rapid demographic change.”

3. Immigrant children
This is absolutely horrific. It’s hard for me to believe that I can go about my daily life when there are families being ripped apart because this administration has a “zero tolerance” for illegal immigration. This is what fascism looks like.

Here’s a repost from Wednesday as there is so much important information on how to get involved.

Wednesday
Let’s be honest, the news is bad and it’s easy to get discouraged. Turn your despair into action and help make good change in November. Today, make a commitment to help a campaign. Are you already on board with a gubernatorial or U.S. Congressional candidate? Make sure you help out a down ballot candidate as well. There are plenty of great people running to make things better.
