Wednesday 11/1 Call to Action

Wednesday
1. GOP Tax Bill
Today, Republicans in Congress were supposed to present the full text of their tax bill. At the last minute they announced that they were postponing the reveal until Thursday or later. Perhaps much like healthcare, revamping the tax code is more difficult than it sounds.
Let’s still prepare so we are ready when the text of this tax bill drops. We should resist this bill with the same urgency we did with healthcare. It will be a troublesome bill to pass. Many Republicans have qualms with SALT deductions (that’s deductions of state and local taxes, read more here:http://www.npr.org/…/salt-reduction-becomes-major-sticking-…).
The National Association of Home Builders has opposed the tax plan because it takes away mortgage deductions. Read more here:https://www.washingtonpost.com/…/7c473cce-bce0-11e7-97d9-bd…
Maine Senator Susan Collins has publicly stated that she opposes repealing the estate tax and cuts for individuals earning more than $1 million. (http://thehill.com/…/357896-gop-senator-susan-collins-detai…)
Passing this tax bill will be a struggle and we must be ready to create as many obstacles as possible. Starting the week of November 6th the GOP tax bill will be marked up in the House Ways and Means Committee (Remember, Erik Paulsen is on this committee!) Mark up in the Senate Finance Committee is expected to start the week of November 13th.
Understanding the tax bill is difficult. Here is a quick reference to help you better understand. https://www.trumptaxscam.org/here-are-the-tax-cuts-donald-…/
Starting today, call your members of Congress.
If GOP, ask them why they fast-tracked the tax bill. https://www.trumptaxscam.org/republican-call-script-to-stop…
If Democrat, encourage them to fight.https://www.trumptaxscam.org/democrat-call-script-to-stop-t…
Now is the time to write that letter to the editor. Seriously, do this. This is an effective way to get our members of Congress to take notice. Here is a handy guideline to make the process easy.http://act.indivisibleguide.com/lte/trump-tax-scam/
This will be an ongoing call to action so stay tuned…
2. Honest Ads Act
If you needed another reason to love our Minnesota senators, here’s a good one. Our own Sen. Amy Klobuchar is cosponsoring a bill that would require online political advertisements to disclose their source of funding. These rules already exist for ads on television and radio. This bill would require social media to fall under the same umbrella. Read more here:

This seems like a no-brainer considering news reports that Russia influenced 126 million people with false information on Facebook, created 130,000 false tweets on Twitter., and 1,000 YouTube videos. (https://www.nytimes.com/…/tech…/facebook-google-russia.html…)
Let’s call Sen. Klobuchar and thank her. Let’s also call our representative and encourage them to support this bill ASAP.
3. Some Good News
A federal judge has blocked the transgender military ban. The judge wrote that the policy, “does not appear to be supported by any facts” and would most likely be declared unconstitutional. The plan will now go back to the one directed under President Obama. Thank goodness. This is evidence of the importance of appointing great legal minds for the judiciary.
