Monday 4/29

1. I could use a break from the primary campaign.  We don't live in Saint Paul anymore, but it, and other cities have elections in 2019!  They are important, but they can be harder to figure out, without political parties: "So far, identity politics and social issues appear to be recurring themes, even for positions that routinely decide such parochial matters as whether a property owner should be assessed for an uncut lawn or icy sidewalk."

https://www.twincities.com/2019/02/08/in-st-paul-19-candidates-have-declared-for-7-city-council-seats-in-fall-election/

So why don’t people vote locally? Two main reasons.

"One is a lack of consolidated elections... The other reason is because many of these contests are, by law, nonpartisan."

https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2019-04-29/why-no-one-votes-in-local-elections

2. Keep an eye on this.

"New rules issued by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in February significantly tighten eligibility requirements, barring staff at clinics that receive the taxpayer-funded grants from providing referrals to abortion providers. The new regulations, now under legal challenge, also require “clear financial and physical separation” between clinics that receive Title X funds and clinics that perform abortions.

Federal law already prohibits federal taxpayer money from being used for most abortions. But Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar has described the changes as “foundational reforms” that will “bring integrity to the program” by ensuring “taxpayer money is not being used to, directly or indirectly, fund abortion.”"

http://www.startribune.com/minnesota-clinics-fight-trump-rule-restricting-funds-for-abortion-referrals/509194402/

3. Democratic presidential contenders are taking strong stands on obstruction of justice in the Mueller report.

"Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., argued Sunday that special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russia interference could implicate President Trump in obstruction of justice, even as she remains hesitant to call for Trump's impeachment."

https://www.nbcnews.com/card/klobuchar-mueller-report-looks-obstruction-justice-n999256

""I believe Congress should take the steps towards impeachment. But I want to say this, because it doesn't end there," the California senator said on a CNN-hosted town hall Monday. "I'm also a realist. ... I have also witnessed folks in the United States Congress, and in particular in the GOP, who have been presented with many reasons to push back against this president and they have not.""

Wednesday 4/24

Wednesday 4/24
Election Security
It’s a fact that election systems in Minnesota were targeted in cyberattacks in 2016. There is no evidence we were compromised, but knowing we were targeted means we must take action. Yet Minnesota is the only state that has not tapped into available federal resources to secure and maintain trust in our electoral systems. The election security funding is being held up by Republicans in the Legislature, because Minnesota is one of the few states that require the Legislature to sign off on use of those funds.
Mary Kiffmeyer, the Republican chair of the Senate committee on elections, has dismissed the need for cybersecurity, stating, “People are being hacked all the time. You’re being hacked all the time, I am. This is no big thing.”
Does that cause rage to swell up inside your belly? Just wait. Yesterday there was an important meeting on election security at the Capitol. Not a single Republican showed up. Shame on them.
If you haven’t called, or even if you already have, please take some time today to contact Senators Kiffmeyer and Gazelka as well as your own senator. Let them have a piece of your mind. Looking for more? A letter written to your local paper about this would be a great idea. Grr.

Omnibus Bill
The Minnesota House and Senate are debating their omnibus bills this week. Check out Indivisible Minnesota Legislative Action for more details on what’s at stake. Be sure to call your legislators on the parts you find important. https://mailchi.mp/…/imla-action-alert-update-tax-omnibus-i…
Trump says he is opposed to White House aides testifying to Congress
The House is trying to conduct oversight on Trump’s attempts at obstruction. Trump is doing everything he can to prevent them from doing their jobs. Call your members of Congress today and encourage them to keep fighting to get all the facts. If you are on board, encourage them to start impeachment was well. No more nice-guy Democrats please. If you have a GOP representative, ask him why he is allowing this nonsense to continue.
Introverts, I see you.
On the spectrum of extrovert to introvert, my needle pushes pretty far into the introverted category. I’m not shy, but being around people is exhausting for me. Unfortunately, much of the activism that has been required these past two years is just so very people-y. Last fall’s campaign season, with the phone calls and door knocking, wiped me out. To be honest, my tank is still pretty empty.
These are complicated times and in order to make our country better, everyone needs to lend a hand. The key to success is to find ways to help that suit all types of personalities. Some of us require quieter forms of activism and that’s okay.
Check out this TED talk that outlines some ideas to help introverts contribute in a way that won’t cause burn-out. Those of you that are organizers, don’t forget those of us in the background. Find ways to engage us as well. Together we can tackle this problem from every angle and make positive, long-term changes.
Congressional District 2
Last evening, Congresswoman Angie Craig had her FOURTH town hall since starting in January. Rep. Craig hit the ground running and is working her buns off for her constituents. What a wonderful change it has been to have her in the lead. CNN Town Hall
On Monday, CNN hosted a town hall with five presidential hopefuls, Amy Klobuchar, Bernie Sanders, Kamala Harris, Pete Buttigieg and Elizabeth Warren. If you missed it, check out the highlights from The New York times here: https://www.nytimes.com/…/pol…/cnn-town-hall-highlights.html

4/22 Call to Action

In Tom Emmer's district or have friends who are?  Call your Congressman and ask him to agree not to use stolen campaign materials, rather than bashing Democrats: "It is time for the emotional, socialist Democrats to knock it off with their childish temper tantrums, accept reality and get back to work"

On this Earth Day, read a little about climate change.

"Our decisions in the next few years will determine whether our climate journey follows a similar course. Perhaps current policy discussions will navigate society through the journey’s recognized risks. If warming progresses rapidly, however, the known concerns — increasing temperatures, sea level rise, a melting Arctic — will not be the whole story. Nature’s unforeseeable surprises, some unimaginable to us today, could become pivotal to our fate."

Friday 4/19 Call to Action

Friday 4/19

Let’s make sure we let our MoC know that we are holding Congress accountable to do their job and defend the Constitution. Our MoC should cosponsor the resolution Rep. Rashida introduced that instructs the Judiciary Committee whether Trump committed impeachable offenses. Both of our Senators have said they would like to hear from Mueller, but it would be great if they heard from you that you are in support of public hearings, keeping Trump, his family and this regime accountable. In the words of Amy Siskind, “Sunlight is the best disinfectant.”

Need help with calling your MoC? Here’s a script.

Need help emailing your MoC? Here’s a script.

Here is a good rundown of the Mueller report from the AP.

If Russian interference has you concerned about MN’s elections, there is a hearing you may be interested in attending.

Monday 4/15 Call to Action

If you're in the south Metro this lunch hour, head down to Burnsville to welcome our president.

"As Trump visits Minnesota on Monday, we will collectively host a peaceful rally outside Nuss Truck and Equipment in Burnsville starting at 11:30 am (anticipated time and place of Trump's arrival.)"

We should expect the Mueller report this week and be prepared for it.

So when could the report be released?

"Any day now. Barr told members of Congress that it would appear this week."

"I agree with Jurecic and Wittes that Trump opponents shouldn’t jump to conclusions about redactions, which might be for perfectly good reasons (and might not actually be hiding anything important; try to fight the natural temptation to assume that what we don’t know must be the important parts). On the other hand, it’s not as if this administration, or this attorney general, has earned the benefit of the doubt. In other words, it’s natural for Congress (and the news media) to want more, and for the administration to give less, and it may not be clear right away which side is correct — or even whether anything important is at stake."

Friday 4/12 Call to Action

Friday 4/12

Trump is using the powerless, including children, as pawns in political payback. Comprehensive immigration reform could be passed, but instead the White House proposed releasing immigrant detainees in sanctuary cities targeting political foes.
White House officials “tried to pressure U.S. immigration authorities to release detainees onto the streets of ‘sanctuary cities’ to retaliate against President Trump’s political adversaries, according to Department of Homeland Security officials and email messages reviewed by The Washington Post.””
“The extent of this administration’s cynicism and cruelty cannot be overstated,” Speaker Pelosi spokeswoman Ashley Etienne told the Post. “Using human beings — including little children — as pawns in their warped game to perpetuate fear and demonize immigrants is despicable.””

Representative Ilhan Omar came under fire again yesterday when on the cover of Rupert Murdoch’s New York Post, which featured the Twin Towers burning in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Posts like this are inciting violence against progressives. Omar was discussing how Muslims are often unfairly implicated in the actions of terrorists. We need to continue calling out uncalled for rhetoric.

As of today, Trump’s new policy on transgender military service effectively bans transgender people from joining the military. This is absurd. “It effectively bans transgender people from joining the military. The more than 14,000 already serving will be allowed to do so openly, so long as they have that formal diagnosis of gender dysphoria filed by the deadline. If not, they must serve under the gender assigned them at birth - or leave the armed forces.” We have so many great people in this country who want to serve, and it shouldn’t matter what gender they identify with, or where they are in their life with wanting to share how they identify their gender.

Here’s what’s happening in the MN State Legislature today.

Monday 4/8 Call to Action

Monday

Another acting cabinet secretary:
"Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen abruptly resigned Sunday, as the president continues to fume over continued illegal border crossings. CBS News first reported Nielsen's impending departure, which Mr. Trump confirmed in a tweet after a 5 p.m. meeting with Nielsen at the White House.

Nielsen's resignation is effective immediately. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Kevin McAleenan will serve as acting DHS secretary, Mr. Trump announced. "

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/kirstjen-nielsen-resigning-dhs-secretary-expected-to-offer-resignation-today-live-updates-2019-04-07/

Since there's not going to be any viable legislative agenda with a Democratic House, the Senate is gearing up to confirm as many nominees as possible.

"Mitch McConnell says the Senate will be in the "personnel business" this year. But the majority leader's focus on confirming President Donald Trump's nominees is coming at the expense of any big legislative priorities.

Nearly 100 days into the new Congress, the drive to confirm is adding more conservatives to the courts and putting more Trump appointees in government offices. But Trump's promises to replace the Affordable Care Act, invest in infrastructure or cut middle class taxes have been essentially shelved."

http://www.startribune.com/senate-gop-game-plan-means-more-trump-nominees-fewer-bills/508231532/

And the fight over Trump's tax returns heats up.

"White House acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney said the call for the records to be released was a "political stunt".

On Wednesday a Congressional tax committee submitted a request for six years of the president's returns from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

Unlike previous presidents, Mr Trump has refused to publish his tax details."

Friday 4/5 Call to Action

Friday 4/5

Thanks to everyone who rallied yesterday across the state publicly protesting to demand that Barr release the Mueller report and make it public. A picture of the St. Paul rally even made a blip on The Rachel Maddow Show! It’s been great seeing the pictures on twitter of all the rallies here in MN.
We won’t stop until the report is released. “The attorney general’s actions raise suspicions about whether he is acting primarily to benefit the president because they don’t make sense when viewed through any other lens. Barr is neither inexperienced nor naive, yet when deciding among the several options available to him when he received Mueller’s report, he chose the one course of action that would raise questions about his own integrity and plunge the Justice Department into political controversy.”
“Barr still has a chance to lift the cloud his actions have placed over his leadership, but to do so, he will have to reverse course quickly. He is right to redact classified information and information about what he called peripheral third parties from the version of the report that is set for the public release, but he should make sure that information is transmitted to Congress. He should petition the D.C. District Court to unseal grand jury information contained in the report, and he should follow the precedent the department set in both the Starr investigation and the 2016 Clinton email investigation and provide underlying investigative materials to lawmakers.
Finally, he should realize that the special counsel is not his antagonist, but his protector. Mueller is one of the most talented and respected prosecutors of his generation, and his integrity will accrue to Barr’s benefit, if only Barr will let it. The sniping the Justice Department has directed toward the special counsel’s office in the press over the past two weeks, both on the record and through leaks to reporters, is not just unseemly — it also hurts the entire department and its ability to do its job.”

Trump has led the most anti-climate and anti-clean energy administration in history. https://thinkprogress.org/trump-campaign-climate-change-clean-energy-a45eeb1a00b3/

There is a lot happening in the omnibus bill in the MN legislature. Here is the schedule. https://www.leg.state.mn.us/cal?d1=04/05/2019

The public safety panel added gun control provisions to the omnibus bill, which has the GOP up in arms.  “Rep. Dave Pinto (DFL-St. Paul) successfully offered the amendment containing language from HF8, which he sponsors. It would require the state to conduct background checks for most private firearm transfers and raise the age to receive a firearm in a private transfer from 18 to 21.
Pinto and other DFL members noted that similar legislation passed in other states has successfully reduced gun violence.
“I appreciate your desire to reduce violent crimes committed with a gun … But this bill does none of that; it is onerous for people already abiding by the law,” said Rep. Jim Nash (R-Waconia).”

“Described as “aspirational” by members on both sides of the aisle, the omnibus education finance bill passed its first hurdle Thursday.
Sponsored by the division chair, Rep. Jim Davnie (DFL-Mpls), HF2400 includes $900 million in new E-12 investments and an array of policy provisions. It was approved, as amended, by the House Education Finance Division and now heads to the House Ways and Means Committee, where it is scheduled to be heard Monday.
“It’s a package that puts the student at the center and surrounds them with the services, supports, opportunities and challenges that they need to succeed,” Davnie said.
The bill recognizes cost drivers for districts, particularly in the area of special education funding, he added. It also targets barriers to student development and achievement by increasing the availability of school support services.”

We need to keep putting pressure on the MN Senate to let our secretary of state have the money needed  for election security. Election security is bipartisan across the nation except in MN. “In most states the top elections administrator could put the federal HAVA money to use immediately in 2018. But Minnesota is one of a handful of states where the legislature must pass a bill that allows the secretary of state to spend the election security money.”

Native American women and girls have been murdered or gone missing across the nation in heartbreaking numbers for generations.
Indigenous women are murdered at a rate 10 times higher than other ethnicities. Murder is the third leading cause of death for Native women according to the Center for Disease Control.
The facts are, the majority of these murders are committed by non-Native people on Native-owned land.
Roadblocks are lack of data, jurisdictional responsibility and the incompatible means of communication between state, local, and tribal law enforcement, interfering with the investigation process.
Minnesota’s agencies are ready to tackle this historic trauma as a core member of this task force.
I am optimistic that with the strong bi-partisan support in House and the Senate, legislators will acknowledge the necessity to address this dark part of Minnesota’s and the national endemic and pass this bill from the respective floors onto to the Governor for signature.” -Rep. Mary Kunesh-Podein

Monday 4/1 Call to Action

Monday 4/1 Call to Action

It's been a week and we still haven't seen the Mueller report.  AG Barr has pledged to release a redacted version of the Mueller Report.  The House has voted, demanding that the full report be released by April 2.

Protests are planned for 5pm April 4, in the event that the report isn't released to the public.  Sign up here for events around the state.

https://www.trumpisnotabovethelaw.org/

The Saint Paul Capitol event is here.

https://www.facebook.com/events/369987013787627/

Take a look at this coverage of a protest of stalled Minnesota bills.

"A group of Democrats calling themselves the "Senate Committee on Banned Bills" will hold an unofficial hearing Monday on bills the Republican majority has refused so far to hear.

That includes requiring universal criminal background checks on gun transfers; preserving an expiring tax on health care providers that helps fund health care programs; encouraging the hiring of more teachers of color; creating a paid family and medical leave system; restoring the rights of felons to vote when they get out of prison; and enacting a state Equal Rights Amendment."

https://www.kimt.com/content/news/At-Capitol-divided-government-means-plenty-of-stalled-bills-507912541.html

And if you are interested in one bipartisan piece of legislation in Saint Paul, "Minnesota’s civil asset forfeiture law could be wiped out under legislation that has won the backing of lawmakers from across the political spectrum ... [but] Faribault Police Chief Andy Bohlen said the measure would dismantle law enforcement’s ability to use seized funds to disrupt Mexican cartel operations that continue to funnel record amounts of methamphetamine and heroin into the state."
