Friday 6/28 Call to Action

Friday 6/28

At the G20 summit Trump signaled he would welcome Russia’s help in 2020. Putin has attacked our democracy and national security, not just our elections. Seeing Trump joke with Putin shows where his loyalties lie.
"Don't meddle in the election, president," Trump said in a joking manner to Putin as cameras clicked and reporters shouted questions. Wagging a finger at the Russian president, Trump repeated, "don't meddle in the election."

Yesterday the House passed the election security bill that would require paper ballots, post-election audits, and give money to states to update election equipment. Now it is off to the Senate. It would be nice if election security was bipartisan, especially in the wake of how Trump has shown where his loyalties lie at the G20.
On Tuesday, Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) attempted to force a vote to allow the Senate to consider her Election Security Act, but was blocked by Sen. James Lankford (R-Okla.). This legislation would require backup paper ballots and provide $1 billion in election security grants for states to improve election security issues.”

There has been a lot of turmoil over the emergency border aid package. Here is why a leading immigrant rights coalition opposed the bill, saying it did more harm than good.

Glencore, a Swiss mining giant is now the majority shareholder of PolyMet. “"Glencore’s worldwide record of environmental disasters, violations of human rights and disregard for workers and labor rights speaks for itself ... The terrible record of Glencore and its leaders should concern every Minnesotan," Hoffman said.”

Wednesday 6/26 CTA

Wednesday June 26
The United States is in crisis. Just this week we have children and families suffering (and dying) at our southern border, Trump was accused of his 22nd assault/rape, there are escalating tensions between U.S. and Iran fabricated by Trump and his warmongering Cabinet, Senate Majority Leader McConnell is still blocking all the things, Trump’s cronies are still ignoring House subpoenas, Trump’s administration is suppressing scientific research, and more. The most disappointing part for me is the lackluster response by our members of Congress. I see a lot of posting on social media but not much else.
Let’s talk about things we can do this week.
Children’s Concentration Camps
We are currently witnessing human rights violations occurring at our southern border and many of those suffering are children.
How can you help? Give money. Groups working to help those detained need donations to keep going. Please donate as you can.
This article lists a number of places to donate. http://stories.brightest.io/best-ways-stop-ice-detention-i…/
You can donate to ActBlue and they will divvy up your money to a number of worthy groups: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/kids-and-families-border
If you are bilingual (Spanish/English) or an immigration lawyer, consider volunteering to help down at the border. If you have a surplus of frequent flier miles, you can donate them to get interpreters and lawyers down to the border. https://www.lawyersforgoodgovernment.org/…/what-can-you-do-…
Write a letter to your local newspaper about this. I bet there are a lot of people in our state who do not know what’s going on. Fill them in on the atrocities.
Join Minnesota Immigrants Rights Action Committee https://www.facebook.com/miracmn/ “MIRAC is an activist organization, and they champion a variety of causes, and it’s helpful to be aware of what they are advocating and what kind of activities they’re involved in, because they’re Minnesota-based and they have their finger on the pulse of many of the most important immigration-related issues of the day.”
Did you know that Minnesota has 36 ICE detention centers? There are centers in Albert Lea, Elk River, Chaska, and Crookston. If you live in a town with a detention center, call you state legislators and ask them about it. Call Governor Walz as well and ask him what’s going on.https://www.businessinsider.com/ice-immigrant-families-dhs-…
"Illinois Democratic Gov. JB Pritzker signed a bill on Friday that bans private immigration detention centers in the state, making it the first in the nation to forbid the practice, according to a release from the governor's office. Pritzker signed the legislation, HB 2040, as part of a three-part package to protect undocumented immigrants, as the state braces for Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids that are expected in Chicago and nine other major cities starting Sunday." - We must still understand that the non-profit industrial complex is just as much a part of this growing no. of concentration camps in the U.S. - https://www.cnn.com/…/illinois-private-detention…/index.html
Call you members of Congress, again and again until this problem is solved. Tired of calling? Write a letter to the editor or use Resistbot: https://resistbot.io/. You can also call the Chairs of these two committees.
Congressional Committee on Homeland Security https://www.govtrack.us/congress/committees/HSHM
Senate Committee on Homeland Security https://www.hsgac.senate.gov/
Take to The Streets Join MIRAC and CAIR-MN on Sunday, June 30th in Minneapolis from 2-4 PM to tell our government to stop separating families. https://www.facebook.com/events/297434524532185/
Vote them out.
We have GOT to flip the Senate (state and federal) in 2020. Thousands of volunteer hours are needed to accomplish this. Decide now what you will do to help and get started.
The first Democratic debates are tonight and tomorrow! Be sure to check it out. https://www.nytimes.com/…/moderators-first-democratic-debat…
Parade Season-As parade season gets started, our favorite elected officials will be marching. Why not volunteer to walk with them? This is a fun, easy way to support the legislators who do good work for us.
Mueller Report
Don’t stop calling your members of Congress about Trump’s impeachable digressions. Call again, and again, and again. Ask them what they are doing about that fact that members of Trump’s administration are ignoring subpoenas.
A number of actors did a dramatic reading of the Mueller Report. Check it out here: https://lawworksaction.org/

Monday 6/24 Call to Action

I'm just going to make a few points this morning.

Go march Sunday.  Trump has threatened massive deportations.  In court Friday, the DoJ argued that it should not have to provide toothbrushes or soap to immigrant children.

Friday 6/21 Call to Action

Friday 6/21

We can’t stop looking at the humanitarian crisis at the southern border, inside the US concentration camps. These human tragedies will never be erased from America’s history books.
A 2-year-old boy locked in detention wants to be held all the time. A few girls, ages 10 to 15, say they’ve been doing their best to feed and soothe the clingy toddler who was handed to them by a guard days ago. Lawyers warn that kids are taking care of kids, and there’s inadequate food, water and sanitation for the 250 infants, children and teens at the Border Patrol station.”

This administration went to court this week to argue that detained migrant children don’t need toothbrushes or soap and can sleep on concrete floors.

From Wednesday because we cannot stop calling and making noise about this:
Congress is currently debating funding for agencies. Call your members of Congress ant tell them to CUT funding for ICE & CBP and get rid of the ICE slush fund.
We Count! is an organization working to close the Homestead camp. Check them out and donate $$ if you can. http://we-count.org/

Maybe now would be a good time to have a secretary of defense? I don’t know what to feel when Trump’s most rational advisor is Vladimir Putin.
A senior administration official said that the operation was underway in its early stages when it was called off. Planes were in the air and ships were in position, but no missiles had been fired when word came to stand down.
“The swift reversal was a stark reminder of the serious risk of military conflict between U.S. and Iranian forces as the Trump administration combines a "maximum pressure" campaign of economic sanctions with a buildup of American forces in the region. As tensions mounted in recent weeks, there have been growing fears that either side could make a dire miscalculation that led to war.”

Next week would be a good week for Congress to vote on authorizing war. I feel like we are living on borrowed time.

As parade season gets started, our favorite elected officials will be marching. Why not volunteer to walk with them? This is a fun, easy way to support the legislators who do good work for us.

Wednesday 6/19 CTA

It’s starting to get mighty uncomfortable here in the U. S. and I don’t like it one bit.
Trump has stated that ICE is planning to start making mass arrests sometime next week. ICE will aim to round up thousands of migrant parents and children across U. S cities. How is that going to happen? Where will those families go? Ugh, my stomach hurts.
Children are being held in detention centers in Homestead, Florida. Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez has called the centers what they truly are, concentration camps. She has faced a lot of backlash, but she is correct in calling them that. If you ever wondered how the atrocities of the Holocaust occurred, its beginnings were very similar to what’s going on right now.
Read this thread to learn a bit more. https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1141101726390464518.html
We need to act on this stuff NOW. We can’t look the other way because it’s going to keep getting worse. Children have already died in detention. Children and families have suffered and are suffering now.
Congress is currently debating funding for agencies. Call your members of Congress ant tell them to CUT funding for ICE & CBP and get rid of the ICE slush fund.

Election Security
Senate Maj. Leader Mitch McConnell has reportedly told his colleagues that he will not allow the Senate to vote on election security legislation this session. Lobbyists for the two biggest voting machine makers have started writing him four figure checks.” https://readsludge.com/2019/06/10/as-he-blocks-election-security-bills-mcconnell-takes-checks-from-voting-machine-lobbyists/
Why is McConnell able to be such a road block in the Senate? A good question to ask Senators Klobuchar and Smith.

Monday, 6/17 Call to Action

Monday

"The United States is stepping up digital incursions into Russia’s electric power grid in a warning to President Vladimir V. Putin and a demonstration of how the Trump administration is using new authorities to deploy cybertools more aggressively, current and former government officials said."

...

"Pentagon and intelligence officials described broad hesitation to go into detail with Mr. Trump about operations against Russia for concern over his reaction — and the possibility that he might countermand it or discuss it with foreign officials, as he did in 2017 when he mentioned a sensitive operation in Syria to the Russian foreign minister."

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/06/15/us/politics/trump-cyber-russia-grid.html

The Justice Department issued a memo to justify not turning over Trump's tax returns.

"The Justice Department on Friday released its legal rationale for refusing to provide President Trump’s tax returns to Congress, arguing that House Democrats want to make the documents public, which “is not a legitimate legislative purpose.”"

There's more evidence here that the GOP conspired to rig the census.

"Voting rights group say they have found even more evidence connecting a now-deceased GOP gerrymandering consultant to the Trump administration’s push to add a citizenship question census."

Friday 6/14 Call to Action

Friday 6/14

The U.S. is in a dangerous situation. Yesterday two oil tankers were attacked on the Gulf of Oman, and the U.S. claimed that Iran was behind the attacks. Iran has denied these accusations. One of the oil tankers attacked was a Japanese vessel, and the owner says that the ship was hit by a flying object, not by a torpedo. Whatever the case, we need to make sure this administration doesn’t lead our military into war with Iran because this administration wants a war. Congress must make sure evidence is disclosed before any decisions are made. Until there is validation that Iran is behind any of these attacks we cannot trust this administration.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Thursday blamed Iran for the attacks on the Norwegian-owned MT Front Altair and the Japanese-owned Kokuka Courageous.
“It is the assessment of the United States government that the Islamic Republic of Iran is responsible for the attacks occurred in the Gulf of Oman today,” Pompeo said in a roughly five-minute statement, citing intelligence, the weapons used, expertise required and similar recent attacks. He did not go into further detail on what evidence the United States has against Iran and did not take questions after the statement.” https://thehill.com/policy/defense/448530-iran-pushes-back-on-tanker-attack-blame-says-it-controls-hormuz-strait
Katada said his ship was attacked on the starboard side by a flying object, not by a mine. “It seems that something flew towards them. That created the hole, is the report I’ve received,” Katada said, according to the Financial Times. “It seems there was a high chance they were attacked by a flying object. The impact was well above the water. I don’t think it was a torpedo.” The Japanese ship owner did not say who might be responsible for the attack. Iran has vehemently denied it was involved.”
Trump has said in an interview that he would accept foreign intel offers on his opponents. He’s already done this once so why wouldn’t he do it again? This is criminal activity and undermines federal law.
Federal Election Commission Chairwoman Ellen Weintraub released a statement Thursday making clear that candidates for public office may not receive help from a foreign government, in what appeared to be a warning to President Trump, who said he would consider taking information about an opponent from another country.”
VOTE THEM OUT!
Senate Republicans blocked legislation on Thursday that would force campaigns to notify the Federal Election Commission and the FBI about attempts by foreign nationals to influence an election.”
Documents released Wednesday show the Environmental Protection Agency was concerned an earlier draft permit for PolyMet’s proposed copper-nickel mine near Hoyt Lakes, set to be the first of its kind in Minnesota, would not meet the standards set in the Clean Water Act unless the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency made substantial changes to the permit.”

Call To Action Wednesday 6/12

Wednesday June 12
Elaine Chao And Another Tale of Trump Cabinet Corruption
Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao is married to the most powerful person in the Senate, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. Her family also owns one of the biggest shipping companies in China. Thanks to some excellent reporting, it has been revealed that Chao and McConnell have been involved in some pretty dastardly behavior.
Chao’s family has contributed big money (more than $1 million) to McConnell’s election campaigns.
Chao is in charge of America’s shipping industry, which has been in steep decline over the past years. She uses her celebrity in China to bolster her family’s own shipping company instead. Chao had attempted to include members of her family in meetings with Chinese officials that she was set to attend as a Cabinet secretary. (Someone called her out about it and she quickly canceled the meeting.)
Chao has abused her authority as transportation secretary by allocating nearly $80 million in federal grants to Kentucky (McConnell’s state). She also hired a former McConnell campaign staffer, Todd Inman, to help navigate the funding process. Keep in mind, this is not typical and it appears to be an example of playing favorites.
Chao owns stock in Vulcan Materials, a road-paving company that happens to be the largest U. S. supplier of stone, sand, and gravel used in road-paving and building. Chao had promised over a year ago to divest from the company, oops. The company’s stock has increased since Chao became transportation secretary and she has pocketed some big $$$.
In saner times, this type of behavior would lead to impeachment of Chao and McConnell. But since McConnell has become dictator of the Senate, I fear it will just become business as usual.
What can we do? Let’s call our members of Congress and demand that Chao step down from her Cabinet position. Let’s commit now to the work it will take to flip the Senate in 2020.
Help for Heroes
Former Comedy Central star, Jon Stewart, spoke before a (not well attended) congressional committee yesterday to fight for funding for the first responders of 9/11. This is a must watch. Once you watch it, call your members of Congress and demand this bill is passed ASAP.

Monday 6/10 Call to Action

Monday

We can call our house members today, to ask they vote to hold Attorney General Barr White House counsel Don McGahn in contempt for defying congressional subpoenas.

"Barr has failed to comply with a subpoena for special counsel Robert Mueller's fully unredacted report and underlying evidence; McGahn balked at a subpoena to testify before the House Judiciary Committee.

The vote, which will take place on June 11, will also include broad authority for congressional committees to take legal action against the Trump administration in future subpoena fights, the Democratic sources say."

It appears that, for now, the US won't put tariffs on imports from Mexico.

Friday 6/7

Friday 6/7

U.S. border officials are forcing migrants to give up their medications to treat conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes and seizures. This is heartless.
During his most recent visit to the clinic in April, when he saw more than 150 migrants, he noted a troubling new trend: a number of people reported that their medication had been taken from them by U.S. border officials.”
“For Russell, a pediatric emergency medicine physician, the patient who stood out the most during that visit was a boy of 8 or 9 with a history of seizures. According to his mother, the child had been on a long-term seizure medicine in their home country, but the medication had been taken from him upon entering the Border Patrol custody in McAllen and never returned.”

Taxpayer dollars are being used to pay soldiers to paint a racist wall. Children have died and they won’t hire enough doctors, but they can use our soldiers to paint a wall for aesthetics.
Members of the military deployed near the U.S.-Mexico border have been assigned to spend a month painting a mile-long stretch of barriers to improve their "aesthetic appearance."”
It is time to defund hate.

Trump administration asks Congress to make disrupting pipeline construction a crime punishable by twenty years in prison. Indigenous rights/climate activism is one of the most dangerous in the world. Pay attention.

The Thomson Reuters Foundation surveyed 500 experts to determine where women were most at risk. Countries were ranked in six key areas: health care, sexual violence, nonsexual violence, cultural practices, discrimination and human trafficking. Nine of the top 10 nations were in Asia, the Middle East or Africa. The only Western nation included was the U.S., which the foundation said was directly related to the #MeToo movement that rocked American society in the wake of rape and sexual harassment allegations against high-profile figures in 2017.”

We aren’t facing just a cyberwar with Russia. This is something to stick a pin in.
The U.S. Navy on Friday said that a Russian destroyer nearly collided with one of its guided missile cruisers after an “unsafe and unprofessional” approach in the Philippine Sea.”
The Russian ship “accelerated and closed to an unsafe distance of ~50-100 feet,” forcing the U.S. vessel to “execute all engines back full and to maneuver to avoid collision,” the statement read.”

Monday 6/3 Call to Action

Although stricter firearms laws were not successfully passed in 2020, they will be important in the 2020 campaign.

"Gun safety activists see a silver lining in the defeat of stricter firearms laws this year in the Minnesota Legislature.

With the 2020 elections coming into view, DFL-backed gun measures are likely to remain a potent organizing tool, particularly among young voters growing up in an age of school shootings, a chronic problem that could put pressure on Senate Republican holdouts."

Republicans are pushing back against Trump's proposal to put tariffs on Mexico.

"Republicans are warning President Donald Trump that he could sabotage his hopes of a new trade agreement with Canada and Mexico if he follows through on plans to impose harsh new tariffs on the latter country.

"The [U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement] would provide much-needed certainty to our agriculture community, at a time when they need it," Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) said in a statement Friday. "If the president goes through with this, I’m afraid progress to get this trade agreement across the finish line will be stifled.""

It doesn't look like we're quite to impeachment yet.

"Trump's approval rating, meanwhile, holds exactly even with where it was in late April -- 43% approve and 52% disapprove of the President, according to the poll. That's the case even as support for impeachment rose slightly from 37% last month to 41% now.

Similarly, those backing impeachment hit 43% in December, down from CNN's previous high mark of this question with 47% in September 2018. The new poll finds 54% are against impeachment."
