Thursday 5/31 Call to Action

Thursday 5/31

1. Puerto Rico
Another hurricane season is starting and we have yet to help Puerto Rico recover from last year’s Hurricane Maria. The Federal Government has not helped the people of Puerto Rico.
National Nurse United, the nation's largest union for registered nurses, said the study confirmed what volunteer nurses who went to the island in the days and weeks after the Sept. 20 landfall witnessed — residents "left to die" by a federal response that "failed its own American citizens."
While the death toll still stands at 64, more than 4600 people died after Maria. That’s 70X higher than the official estimate.

Now would be a good time to let our Representatives know that our fellow Americans need access to electricity, potable water, and groceries. The Senate should be holding hearings as to what went wrong. The Senate should also require an updated count of the number of deaths to the official government count.

2. Governor Dayton
Yesterday was a busy day for vetoes and signing of bills into work for the Governor, You can reach out to him and thank him for working for Minnesotans.
What was vetoed:
Chapter 196. SF 2809: This bill would have restructured the Metropolitan Council and eliminated the Transportation Advisory Board.
Chapter 197. SF 3463: This bill would have made people “guilty by association” for the actions of an individual against certain utilities or public works.
Chapter 206. HF 3463: This bill would have imposed unfunded mandates on the Minnesota Department of Public Safety and MNLARS system.
Chapter 210. HF 3422: This bill would have replaced the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency’s responsibility under state and federal law to determine a wild rice water quality standard by unlawfully fiving a work group this power.
Today the Governor is signing Bipartisan Pension Legislation

Wednesday 5/30 Call to Action

The state session is over.  Congress is in work sessions or recess.  Trump is still Trumping.  Elections are less than six months away.

Let's focus a little on "candidate Wednesday" the statewide governor's races and the DFL state races.

1. Here's a list of Minnesota DFL House candidates.

http://dflhouse.com/candidates

2. Check out this comparison of MN Governor Candidates.  The state convention is *this weekend*!  Of course, there's a primary, but next week, we may have a pretty good idea of our next governor.

https://cd2action.com/governor-candidate-comparison/

3. Take a look at this piece from Bloomberg on the tactics Bannon, Trump and Cambridge Analytica used to influence the election.

"The story’s writer—an employee of the conservative website run by Steve Bannon before he took over Donald Trump’s campaign—spent weeks courting activist Bruce Carter to join Trump’s cause. He approached Carter under the guise of interviewing him. The writer eventually dropped the pretense altogether, signing Carter up for a 10-week blitz aimed at convincing black voters in key states to support the Republican real estate mogul, or simply sit out the election. Trump’s narrow path to victory tightened further if Hillary Clinton could attract a Barack Obama-level turnout."

Tuesday 5/29 Call to Action

Tuesday
1. Immigrant Children
It has been difficult to escape the news of missing immigrant children swirling around media this weekend. This is a shameful time in America. There is more than one story happening here and it’s important to understand the difference between the two.
Federal Agencies Lost Track of Nearly 1,500 Migrant Children Placed With Sponsors
A top official with the Department of Health and Human Services told members of Congress on Thursday that the agency had lost track of nearly 1,500 migrant children it placed with sponsors in the United States, raising concerns they could end up in the hands of human traffickers or be used as laborers by people posing as relatives. The children were taken into government care after they showed up alone at the Southwest border. Most of the children are from Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala, and were fleeing drug cartels, gang violence and domestic abuse, government data shows.
Some argue that we should not be bringing attention to these missing migrant children. Unaccompanied minors are often paired up with relatives living in the United States. The migrant children may be avoiding members of DHHS because their sponsors are undocumented and fear deportation.
Parents and Children are being separated at the border.
Reports have revealed that a new directive from the Trump administration is systematically removing children, as young as 12 months of age, from their parents at America’s borders. Not all of these families are caught entering illegally. Some families are following the proper guidelines to enter the U. S. seeking asylum. The children are taken away and are given little to no contact with their parents for months. (!!) I cannot even imagine the turmoil of losing a child.
https://www.nytimes.com/…/immigrant-children-separation-ice…
This is a true outrage and we should be making tons of noise about it.
Watch this clip: Chris Hayes on 'despicable' new Trump policy https://www.msnbc.com/…/trump-administration-separating-par… via @msnbc
There are TONS of resources to help you take action. Check them out here:
Senator Tina Smith has proposed a new bill, The HELP Separated Children Act, that will safeguard innocent children traveling through America’s borders: https://twitter.com/SenTinaSmith/status/1000083394087276545
This week, call your members of Congress, and use social media to shed light on this unacceptable behavior. Donate to programs that fight for these families. Volunteer your time and money to quality candidates who will make America a place worth fighting for.
2. We’re right around the corner from another set of special elections – and we’ve got the chance to help roll back some of the damage Scott Walker has done to Wisconsin from home. On June 12, the two seats Walker tried to avoid calling special elections for are up.

Friday 5/25 Call to Action

Friday
1. Lawsuit against Alex Jones
The families of six people killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary School attacks filed defamation lawsuits against right-wing conspiracy theorist and radio show host Alex Jones, who has questioned the authenticity of the 2012 shooting that left 26 dead, including 20 children.
Jones and his conspiracy theory program, InfoWars, have alleged that the Sandy Hook massacre did not happen, that is was staged by the government, and that the parents of the victims are participating in a cover-up.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/InfoWars
Families of the victims have already experienced the tragedy of losing a loved one, now they must endure constant harassment from InfoWars fans. They have people follow them, videotape their children, deface memorials to their lost loves ones. It has been so bad that some families have been forced to move. I cannot imagine how terrible that must be.
Watch this clip from John Oliver: https://youtu.be/WyGq6cjcc3Q
Two Minnesota companies, Genesis Communications Network Inc and Midas Resources Inc-both privately owned by Ted Anderson, have been included in this defamation lawsuit. https://www.mprnews.org/…/minnesota-man-named-as-defendant-…
The lawsuit alleges Anderson, the head of Genesis — a talk radio syndicator — appeared many times on Jones' show to promote his other business, Midas Resources, which has sold precious metals and dietary supplements over the years.
The Sandy Hook families hope that suing Jones and the other defendants will finally put the conspiracy theory to rest, and free them from any further harassment.
Genesis Communications Network Inc., (GCN) hosts Alex Jones’ radio show. Midas Resources Inc. sells nutritional supplements, much like Alex Jones does. If you feel inclined, why not contact these businesses and ask why they support disinformation and harassment of innocent victims. Maybe add a Yelp review too.
2. Title X -Women’s Health Care
Trump has proposed a “domestic gag rule,” a change in Title X that will, among other things, cut off federal funding to health groups that perform abortions or even provide information about them. Planned Parenthood, which will be hard-hit by this rule change, sized up its significance in an email to reporters: "For nearly two decades, Title X law has been clear: Health care providers cannot withhold information from you about your pregnancy options. This rule means they can": https://www.npr.org/…/what-does-trumps-proposal-to-cut-plan…
Trump’s proposal would not just block groups like Planned Parenthood from receiving Title X funds. It also could pave the way for a host of previously ineligible organizations — some of which oppose contraception — to receive funds through the federal government's family planning program. https://www.npr.org/…/under-trump-family-planning-funds-cou…
What the heck! Providing quality health care and birth control options for women benefits everyone. This attack on women’s bodies needs to stop.
Planned Parenthood has made it easy for us to send a comment to the Department of Health & Human Services:https://www.plannedparenthoodaction.org/…/what-is-the-domes….
While your at it, call your members of Congress and tell them this gag rule is no bueno.

Thursday 5/24 Call to Action

Thursday 5/24

There is so much chaos surrounding the White House that we are mainly focusing on local things today, because change starts at the local level, and the 2018 midterms cannot come soon enough.

1. Gov. Dayton vetoes Republican Tax and Ominbus Budget Bills
Today would be a good day to reach out and thank Governor Dayton for vetoing these bills and putting Minnesotans first.
“I am vetoing this bill because of its misguided priorities that give tax cuts to corporations and the wealthy over the education of our children,” said Governor Dayton in his veto letter on the Republican Tax Bill.
“This terrible bill and the resulting veto are your creations,” said Governor Dayton in his veto letter on the Republican Omnibus Budget Bill. “Never have I seen a legislative session so badly mismanaged, less transparent, and more beholden to monied special interests.”

2. Aim Higher Minnesota Act
The Aim HIgher Minnesota Act is legislation with long term solutions for what is failing in public schools. We need to keep our educators in the profession and provide resources for students so they can have a healthy, successful education. If this is important to you here’s a quick petition to sign.

3. Bus lanes for racial and class equality and climate action.
Because of inaction to date, addressing climate change and building a more equitable society requires that we all urgently alter the way we live our lives and relate to our community. At the local level, our commitment to climate action and equity, or lack thereof, manifests in decisions like whether to put a bus lane on a highly traveled but excruciatingly slow bus route. With each decision, we collectively decide whether to move toward a more stable future or whether to double down on a status quo that surely leads to a less hospitable city and Earth.”

4.Vote At Home
Vote-at-home (VAH) systems, using old-fashioned postal mail and paper ballots, are just better. They increase turnout and make voting a more positive experience. If progressives are looking for a simple, powerful way to reform voting and boost democracy, well, there’s one sitting right in front of them.”
“Progressives need a simple, powerful, and easily communicated electoral reform to cut through the complexity and rally voters. I think national VAH fits the bill, and as it happens, Oregon Sen. Ron Wyden already has a bill written and ready to go: the Universal Right to Vote by Mail Act.”
“Such a reform would benefit almost everyone, but particularly populations that have difficulty getting to a polling place on a weekday (working mothers, the ill or elderly, low-income, etc.).”
This might be something to bring up to our Senators.

Wednesday 5/23 Call to Action

Wednesday
1. School Shooting
Another school shooting with more innocent lives lost. Total inaction by our elected representatives. At this point, I believe the best course of action is to vote them out. I wonder how many more people will die in the mean time. We may not be able to change the actions of our Republican members of Congress, but we can be a thorn in their sides. Call them; use these facts to explain why you will be voting for someone new in November. Use this as motivation to get out and help good public servants win.
An ever-growing body of research consistently reaches the same conclusion: The only variable that can explain the high rate of mass shootings in America is its astronomical number of guns. Americans make up about 4.4 percent of the global population but own 42 percent of the world’s guns. The only place that has a higher rate of gun violence than America is Yemen.
https://www.nytimes.com/…/mass-shootings-us-international.h…
America is bursting at the seams with guns, but when mass shootings occur, the NRA and the GOP will blame everything else but guns for these tragedies. Some examples are the following: the media, violent video games, abortion, the lack of religion in schools, Ritalin, a lack of school choice, and finally, too many doors. Good grief!
https://www.washingtonpost.com/…/things-blamed-for-the-de…/…
Kids in school have a lot on their plates: Tests, sports, relationships, and now being killed in a mass shooting.
Students raised with the persistence of mass shootings and versed in the protocol of active shooter drills think often of the possibility of a shooting in their schools. Whether they are in English or history class, they routinely consider the safety of their classrooms, even running scenarios in their heads about how likely they are to get shot.
Since the Sandy Hook Elementary School mass shooting nearly six years ago in Newtown, Conn. — when this generation’s high school students were of middle-school age or younger — there have been more than 200 school shootings nationwide, including the recent rampage in Parkland, Fla., which inspired a youth-led movement to reform gun laws.
Shootings are so common that students talk in frighteningly practical terms about the location of doors and windows in their classrooms as risk factors. They calculate escape routes. And they ponder hiding spots in wide-open rooms.
This is not normal and it is certainly not okay.
https://www.nytimes.com/…/school-shootings-drills-risks.htm…
Following the Parkland shooting in February, Trump established a Federal Commission on School Safety headed by Betsy Devos. The group has met once. Children continue to be killed at school. https://news.vice.com/…/what-exactly-is-besty-devos-school-… Let’s ask Betsy DeVos and our MoCs just how long we need to wait for answers to this national crisis. DeVos: https://www.usa.gov/federal-age…/u-s-department-of-education
2. Minnesota State Legislature
The Minnesota State Legislature finished their session in the wee hours on Sunday. Check out Watch Your Reps MN for the highlights (and lowlights). There are some bills that we need Governor Dayton to veto.https://mailchi.mp/…/watchyourrepsmn-session-is-done-but-ma…
3. EPA
The Environmental Protection Agency barred The Associated Press, CNN and the environmental-focused news organization E&E from a national summit on harmful water contaminants.
The EPA blocked the news organizations from attending Tuesday’s Washington meeting, convened by EPA chief Scott Pruitt.
EPA spokesman Jahan Wilcox told the barred organizations they were not invited and there was no space for them, but gave no indication of why they specifically were barred.
Pruitt has faced criticism in recent weeks over emails showing the EPA sought to intervene in a critical study on the contaminant.
Journalists are fighting to keep our democracy strong. This type of action from the EPA is alarming.

Monday 5/21 Call to Action

Sunday night, the president tweeted that his demand for a DoJ investigation into whether his campaign had an embedded spy.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2018/05/20/president-trump-says-he-demand-justice-department-probe-into-fbi-informant/627162002/

1. I'm going to let my state legislators know that they need to act to protect Minnesota election security.

"In Aug. 2016, hackers probed Minnesota’s Statewide Voter Registration System — the heart of the state’s election system that includes a database used to verify who can and cannot vote.

They failed. But “we know they will be back in 2018,” Simon said, referring to the November general election, which will feature the offices of governor, both U.S. Senate seats, and every U.S. and state House seat, as well as the statewide offices of state auditor and secretary of state — Simon’s job. He’s running."

Friday 5/18 Call to Action

Friday
1. August Is for Taking Away Healthcare
Topher Spiro has sent out a red alert that the GOP in Congress are planning to forgo their August recess to stay in session and decimate our healthcare. Their goal is to gut protections for people with pre-existing conditions, make junk plans permanent, and wave ACA protections. If a state chooses to spend block grant money on Medicaid, this bill will allow healthy people to cash out of their benefit. Republicans plan on using a budget resolution so it can be passed on party line votes. This bill is bad news, people. We need to start making noise about it now.
Read more about it here: https://twitter.com/TopherSpiro/status/996766533887066113
Or here: https://www.buzzfeed.com/…/republicans-know-voters-are-goin…
The good news (I guess) is that we have fought this before. We know what to do, so let’s get started. If you have a Republican representative, let them know you are on to their scheme.
2. Farm Bill Today
The farm bill (HR 2) is bad. Bad. Bad. Bad. The House is planning on voting on it today. Americans from the rural Midwest, many of whom voted for conservative candidates, will be feeling the heat. Keep calling until the vote is done.
https://www.motherjones.com/…/if-house-republicans-get-the…/
The intention of kicking so many people off of food assistance is to recoup some of the money lost by the omnibus budget bill. Adding the work requirement rule to the Farm Bill is so expensive, it will eat up all of those savings. https://www.washingtonpost.com/…/03998746-5a10-11e8-8836-a4…
3. Jason Lewis’ Tiny Town Halls
Representative Jason Lewis of the second congressional district is feeling the heat of reelection. So much so that he has capitulated and is having his first “town halls” since being elected in 2016. “Town Hall” is in quotes because the audience was pre-selected and the venues are tiny (seriously, one of them is in a coffee shop!). If you signed up for a town hall ticket and were denied, you can still send a message to Rep. Lewis. Join your neighbors in Wabasha or Lakeville to protest Lewis’ lack of leadership.
