Friday 12/22 Call to Action

Friday
2. $$ for America
Yesterday, Congress passed a four-week stopgap funding measure (called a continuing resolution or CR) to keep America going until January 19th. Once again, Congress has managed to punt important issues down the road to address another time. Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) has been funded, but only through March. FISA, the Foreign Intellegence Surveillance Act was reauthorized until January 19th. A sequester law that would have triggered $25 billion cuts to Medicare was stopped.
Democrats had vowed to find a solution for Dreamers/ Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) before the end of the year. They failed to do so. Some argue Democrats lost bargaining power by not addressing this before the start of recess. http://www.cnn.com/…/pol…/daca-leverage-democrats/index.html
When Congress returns in the New Year, they will need to deal with the following:
*Funding the government from January 20th through the rest of fiscal year 2018.
*The Senate will need to consider a bill that would provide $81 billion in disaster relief (this bill has already passed the House)
*Reauthorizing/reforming FISA to continue past January 19th.
*Funding CHIP long term. (https://www.indivisible.org/…/congress-still-needs-reautho…/
*Pass a bill like DACA for Dreamers before March (https://www.indivisible.org/resources/immigration/)
*Consider and pass a bill (Like the Alexander-Mueey bill) that will offset the cost of insurance premiums and stabilized the health insurance market. (Did you hear’? Healthcare sign ups reached 96% of last year despite advertising dollars and enrollment time being slashed by the Trump administration.https://khn.org/…/despite-compressed-sign-up-period-aca-en…/)
Many Congressional offices will close tomorrow for the rest of the year. Today, give your members of Congress a call and let them know what issues you want them to fight for in 2018.
2. Volunteer for Change
Here is another opportunity of make positive change. Melissa Wagner is running in a special election to fill the MN House seat for 23B. Please check out her web page, “Like” her on Facebook, and donate to her campaign.

3. UN Condemner's Trump’s Jerusalem Decision
Yesterday, the United Nations voted 128-9 to condemn Trump’s decision to name Jerusalem of the capitol of Israel. This vote came after US Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley made a speech threatening to pull America’s payments to the UN if they did not support Trump’s decision.
Watch Haley’s speech here: https://youtu.be/KVTQefA77Ys
Former CIA director, John Brennan had strong words for Trump and Hailey.
"Trump Admin threat to retaliate against nations that exercise sovereign right in UN to oppose US position on Jerusalem is beyond outrageous. Shows @realDonaldTrump expects blind loyalty and subservience from everyone—qualities usually found in narcissistic, vengeful autocrats."
Alienating the rest of the world does not seem like a wise move, especially considering North Korea’s threat of nuclear weapons.
4. A Heartfelt Thank You
Being civically engaged is our new normal now. We are in this for the long term. We are going to change this world for the better, I just know it.
I will close the year with an article from Teen Vogue.
“Democracy was always intended to be a dynamic process fueled by active civic engagement. Perhaps the one optimistic take on this godforsaken year is that we’ve begun to recall that the American project is not a historical accomplishment to be celebrated but instead an ongoing process of figuring out how we ought to live together. “
“Politics is not something separate that only certain people do, closed off in some room somewhere. It is not miraculously vacuum-sealed off from our day-to-day routines. “Politics” impacts everything, from where you get your water to how you access health care. As an electorate confronting the rise of authoritarianism — which recently included a literal list of banned words — we must come to understand participatory democracy as something that is seamlessly integrated into our daily existence, rather than distinct from it. We have to figure out how to enjoy our lives and be invested in politics.”
TPOM’s call to action team (barring any constitutional crises) will be taking next week off to spend time with our families and recharge our minds. We will return in the New Year ready to continue this fight with you. We cannot thank you enough for all that you do. It has been an exhausting year! On the flip side, we have learned so much and we have met the very best people-you. For that we are thankful.

Thursday 12/21 Call to Action

Thursday 12/21 Call to Action

We are preparing for the Christmas massacre. Everyone should be ready to take action that Trump will fire Mueller, Rosenstein, and possibly Sessions. David Nunes has been up to no good.
The people familiar with Nunes' plans said the goal is to highlight what some committee Republicans see as corruption and conspiracy in the upper ranks of federal law enforcement. The group hopes to release a report early next year detailing their concerns about the DOJ and FBI, and they might seek congressional votes to declassify elements of their evidence. That final product could ultimately be used by Republicans to discredit special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into whether any Trump aides colluded with Russia during the 2016 campaign — or possibly even to justify his dismissal, as some rank-and-file Republicans and Trump allies have demanded.”

Continue to contact your Members of Congress about HR 3654 and S 1735. These bills would prevent Trump from firing Mueller without a panel of three judges agreeing to it first. Now more than ever we need to protect this investigation. Let your MoC know that firing of the special counsel and impeding this investigation is a red line that Trump cannot cross and that we the people will not stand for it.

And what do you do if Trump does fires Mueller? Sign up here to find an event near you.

Tuesday 12/19 Call to Action

1. Tax Bill
The House is set to vote today and the Senate either tonight or tomorrow. With Sens. Collins and Corker on board now, it is most likely going to pass. Keep calling today and tomorrow. Make it as uncomfortable as possible for them while they screw over the middle class.
ttps://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2017/business/tax-bill-calculator/?hpid=hp_hp-visual-stories-desktop_no-name%3Ahomepage%2Fstory&utm_term=.5a134e830223?
With the tax bill behind them, Congress will need to focus on the budget bill in order to keep the government running. The Republicans cannot pass this without the help of Democrats. We can encourage our senators to insist that clean versions of the DREAM Act and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) are included

3. The Tragedies in Myanmar
Thank you S. M. for this call to action. With the never ending tumult occurring in American politics it is easy to put your head down and shut out the world. For months now unfathomable brutalities have been happening in Myanmar against the Rohingya people.

HR4223 https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/house-bill/4223
This bill would impose sanctions on the Myanmar military to convince them to stop their campaign of genocide against the Rohingya. I think the bill could garner bipartisan support if only Majority Leader McConnell would let it come to the floor for a vote.
America is having a crisis of identity. At its heart, I believe that America is good and stands for the humane treatment of all people regardless of geography. Let’s remind our members of Congress who we really are. Contact them today and encourage them to support this bill.

12/18 Call to Action

Monday

It seems like we should be winding down for the holidays, but we're not.  The Trump resistance goes on.

1. Let's continue to pay attention to the Trump/Russia investigation.  I've stuck all the locations in Minnesota down a bit in this email.

According to WaPo, "Trump appeared to be contemplating changes in the Justice Department’s leadership."
https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/trump-says-he-wont-fire-mueller-as-campaign-to-discredit-russia-probe-heats-up/2017/12/17/801e8cce-e348-11e7-ab50-621fe0588340_story.html

From Ben Wikler, head of moveon.org

Seriously. Don’t just fret about Trump firing Mueller. Be ready.

We have a plan. 400+ protests nationwide, within hours. Go to http://TrumpIsNotAboveTheLaw.org  RIGHT NOW and pre-RSVP so you’ll get updates re time & location. And then share this & recruit 10 friends to sign up.

2. We can still make calls to end the tax bill
https://www.trumptaxscam.org/calls-to-kill-the-tax-scam/

3. Here is a call script to request a clean Dream Act from senators.
"Let them know you want protections for immigrant youth included in the final version of the budget resolution."

4. While you're picking a fight with relatives over the holidays, here is some ammo: a list of ways we are less safe under Trump.

From his tweets to his bluster to his white supremacist policies, Donald Trump poses a security risk to the United States. He is actively making us less safe with each day in office. Here is a running list of just some of the ways he has threatened our safety.

Friday 12/15 Call to Action

Friday
1. Net Neutrality
Yesterday, in a vote of 3-2, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted to enact the “Restoring Internet Freedom” Act that will dismantle net neutrality regulations, opening the door for internet providers to do what they want with your access to apps and websites.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/…/the-fcc-is-expected-to-r…/…
This vote went forward despite allegations that some of the public comments on the FCC site were fake. (1.5 million of them!) Let our senator, Amy Klobuchar explain it here:https://twitter.com/amyklobuchar/status/941075198723342336
I don’t know about you, but free and open access to the internet is important to me. Heck, this entire resistance movement is built upon the internet. I sure hope Ajit Pai took this decision seriously.
Watch this video Pai made and decide for yourself. FCC Chairman Ajit Pai Explains Net Neutrality https://youtu.be/JqONIPwidQw via @YouTube
This video leaves me gobsmacked. Apparently, Mr. Pai thinks the only things Americans need the internet for are selfies and “gram-ing” pictures of food. Despite what he thinks, access to the internet is not a joke.
Here’s FCC Commissioner Mignon Clyburn’s statement on net neutrality.https://twitter.com/i/web/status/941408144386875393 Commissioner Pai makes a joke of her comments as well.
It’s not time to throw in the towel. There is still life left in this fight.
A) The advocacy group, Free Press has announced that they are suing the FCC over the decision to destroy net neutrality rules.https://act.freepress.net/donate/internet_nn_lawsuit/…
B) New York Attorney General, Eric Schneiderman is also suing the FCC. Learn more here: http://thehill.com/…/364933-new-york-ag-to-sue-fcc-over-net…
Eighteen Attorneys General from other states have joined the fight. Minnesota is not currently one of them. Today you can call our AG, Lori Swanson and ask her if she plans to do so.

Calls are answered Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
C) The Net Neutrality Fight goes to Congress
On Wednesday, 107 Republican members of Congress sent a letter to the FCC supporting the repeal of net neutrality. Want to have a guess which Minnesota House members signed the letter? No need to guess, I’ll tell you.
1. Jason Lewis $21,500
2. Tom Emmer $28,500
The money after their names is the amount they received as donations from the telecom industry. Does this make you angry? It should.
https://motherboard.vice.com/…/republican-members-of-congre…
Senator Ed Markey is using the Congressional Review Act to force Congress to vote about net neutrality.https://twitter.com/benwikler/status/941497737933148160
This means that you need to warm up your dialing finger and get to calling you members of Congress ASAP.
https://www.markey.senate.gov/…/senator-markey-leads-resolu…
2. Appointments to the Judiciary
On Wednesday, Senator Charles Grassley announced that two of Trump’s court nominees-Jeff Mateer and Brett Talley-will not go forward in the confirmation process. This is great news! We need to keep pressure on our members of Congress. Trump is picking extreme, inexperienced people for life long appointments. This could affect the courts for decades.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/…/e3876ffa-e02e-11e7-8679-a9…

Thursday 12/14 Call To Action

Thursday 12/14 Call To Action

I don’t know about you but it feels like a Throwback Thursday since so many of these issues seem to be on repeat. Let’s continue to ride the momentum from Tuesday night and put the pressure on our Members of Congress. They are feeling the intensity all around the country.

1. Net Neutrality
Today is the day for the repeal vote on net neutrality. The vote should be delayed until they can get to the bottom of this massive fraud, but as of now it is still on. This is an attack on the integrity of our democratic process. Let your MOC know what you think about this, and do it early! If you are in Betty McCollum’s district you can thank her for speaking out about delaying the vote. Senator Klobuchar has also spoken out about the fraudulent comments.

Here’s information KMP has posted earlier.
A) Voice your opinion on the FCC comment page
*Click on the “17-108” option which is labeled “Restoring Internet Freedom”,
*Click on “Express” (vs. New Filing) on the left
*Enter name and info and in the comment section add “I strongly support net neutrality backed by Title 2 oversight of ISPs” and then can add other comments too
*Then continue to the review screen and review
*Hit “submit”
B) FCC Commissioners contact information *Note: I have tried multiple times to call but the phone numbers don’t work for me. Try the emails and Twitter handles instead.

2. Tax bill
In the words of Robert Redford, “It’s a dirty deal.” What Redford has to say in this article is what so many of us believe about our national treasures. This tax bill has so many terrible things hidden in it and the GOP are rushing it to the finish line. What this bill will do is worth repeating. It will remove deductions for state and local taxes, student loans, and high medical bill, it will kick 13 million Americans off health coverage, it increases the deficit by $1.5 trillion, and raise taxes on 78 million middle class family. It also targets a very wild place left on Earth, the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Oil and gas companies have their eyes on this treasure and will begin drilling if this bill passes. Continue to pressure your MOC and tell them to kill the bill.

3. EPA chemical safety nominee
KMP posted this yesterday but we need to relish in the good when we can. Trump’s nominee for the EPA chemical safety has withdrawn his nomination after his confirmation seemed unlikely.
