Friday 9/29 Call to Action

Friday
1. The Rules Don’t Apply to Them
By now I am sure you have heard word of Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price’s unfortunate choice to take private chartered planes on the taxpayer’s dime. Reports estimate that the cost of these chartered flights totals up to more than $400,000! There has been enough of a backlash against this that Price has pledged to reimburse taxpayers about $52,000. Now I am no math whiz, but $52k seems less than $400k. Where’s the rest of the money? To make matters worse, reports came out yesterday that Price used military planes for overseas travel which cost taxpayers an additional $500,000. Price is not alone. EPA’s Scott Pruitt has been using private planes. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin is also guilty. Trump has no issue golfing almost weekly on the taxpayer’s dime. This isn’t Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, people. These shameful acts of extravagance are more infuriating in light of the fact that Trump’s administration cannot afford to give Americans decent health care, and they are busy turning our government’s departments into skeleton crews.
The only way this is going to change is if we continue to make noise. Call our senators and let them know how your feel. Write a letter to the editor or share your ideas on social media.
2. Automatic Voter Registration Act
HR 2840, Automatic Voter Registration Act would automatically register anyone 18 years or older that is eligible to vote as long as they have provided their information to the state motor vehicle authority. This bill has a lot of cosponsors (including reps., Ellison, McCollum, and Walz) but it needs a little push to get out of committee.
https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/house-bill/2840
Senator Amy Klobuchar is spearheading the same idea in the Senate:https://www.klobuchar.senate.gov/…/…/mobile/amy-in-the-news…
Illinois’ governor just signed automatic voter registration into law. It’s time for the whole country to get on board. Give your members of Congress a call and tell them you support the idea of making it easier to register to vote.
We need to do everything possible encourage high voter turnout. Flipping the House and Senate in 2018 is our best chance to reign in the Trump administration.
Let’s end today’s call to action with a little good news. Last Tuesday, two more seats went to Democratic candidates in what were historically super red districts. Annette Taddeo took a state Senate seat in Florida and Kari Lerner won a state House seat in New Hampshire. Eight seats have flipped from red to blue in 2017 so far! This is great news, people.
Let this news motivate you to keep going. Want to help canvass via postcard? Text HELLO to (484) ASK-ABBY and you will be set up with instructions and addresses.

Thursday, 9/28 Call To Action

It is hard to believe that September is almost over and we have ALMOST survived another month with Trump being in office. This fight has been exhausting but our country and democracy are worth fighting for.

1. Tax Reform.
Not surprising that this tax reform would only benefit the wealthy, specifically Trump, his family, and his cabinet members. Republicans claim that this tax plan would cut taxes for the middle-class but that is untrue. About 20 percent of households and more than half of single parents would end up paying more in taxes. This plan is tax cuts for the rich and adds trillions of dollars to the government’s debt. And wouldn’t it be nice to see Trump’s taxes?

2. CHIP (Children’s Health Insurance Program ) expiration.
This program is set to expire on 9/30 and would have a disastrous effect on 125,000 children in MN. It helps pay for needed doctor visits and vaccinations. CHIP helps fund prenatal and postpartum care for about 1,700 low-income pregnant women who do not qualify for health care through Medicaid. Call your representatives and let them know we need CHIP.

3. EPA
The proposed Trump FY18 budget would cut EPA by 30 percent, reducing the agency’s real budget to levels not seen since the 1970s. This has many state and local leaders reeling, because they are on the front lines protecting the health of families and communities, and they depend on a strong partnership with the federal EPA. That partnership involves federal funding, legal support and scientific expertise.” Read more about it here.

4. Puerto Rico
Please continue to help if you can.

Wednesday, 9/27 Call to Action

Wednesday
1. The Watchful Eye
Starting on October 18th, the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will begin collecting information on immigrants, including green card holders and naturalized citizens. A new DHS policy will allow them to collect information about an immigrant’s Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook accounts, and possibly computer search results. Keep in mind, this would also indirectly involve anyone who interacts with immigrants (almost everyone).
If the idea of this makes you squeamish, I recommend you read more here,
https://www.buzzfeed.com/…/people-are-worried-about-dhs-pla…
and contact your members of Congress to let them know how you feel.
2. SHARE Act
The Sportsmen’s Heritage and Recreational Enhancement (SHARE) Act (H.R. 3668)
This bill would open up federal land and wilderness areas managed by the Bureau of Land Management and the US Forest Service to fishing, hunting and recreational shooting. The bill would allow volunteer shooters to help with wildlife management on federal lands. Oh, and by the way, this bill is also trying to sneak in legislation to remove restrictions on gun silencers and allow manufacturers, rather than the Attorney General, to decide exactly what armor piercing bullets are.
There is a lot going on in this bill. Here’s some more information. Give it a read and call your representative.
https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/house-bill/3668
3. Judges, Bad Hombres
Trump has nominated Thomas A. Farr for a federal judgeship in North Carolina. Farr has a colorful history of encouraging voter suppression. He was twice blocked by Senate when he was nominated by G. W. Bush. Read more here: http://www.newsweek.com/trump-north-carolina-farr-voter-sup…Trump’s lifetime appointments of judges will have an effect on America for decades to come. We should probably be making more noise about this. Luckily, Minnesota’s two senators are awesome and on the Judiciary Committee. Give them a call to offer you support and encourage them to stay tough.
Here is a list of Trump’s pending nominees. Read up and make some noise!http://judicialnominations.org/pending-nominees
Here’s some extra credit from Rogan’s List:
Our five (5) living former presidents have launched a fundraiser to help Puerto Rico and other US locations impacted by the recent hurricanes. The campaign, titled “One America Appeal,” will allow donors to contribute funds to United for Puerto Rico and The Fund for the Virgin Islands. Both are 501(c)(3) organizations. Read the full story at The Hill. We can donate if we wish to One America Appeal and specify from which storm's recovery (Harvey, Irma, Maria) that we want our donation to go.

Tuesday 9/26 Call to Action

Tuesday
1. There’s a Fox in Our Cyber Hen House
This story was dumped last Friday evening amid a tsunami of news and I think it has been overlooked. Let’s focus on it today.
The U. S. Department of Homeland Security reported that Minnesota’s election website was targeted by Russian hackers. This also occurred in 20 other states, including our neighbors in Wisconsin and Iowa. According to Minnesota’s Secretary of State Steve Simon, the attempt was unsuccessful- this time. If they attempted it in 2016, the odds are they will try it again in 2018 and 2020.
America’s electoral systems are painfully antiquated. Electronic ballots and voter registration systems are vulnerable to interference from foreign governments. Now is the time to address this issue and we need to encourage Congress to get to work.
What should you ask your members of Congress to do?
Ask them to upgrade voting technology in every state. All voting machines should include paper ballots so that there is a physical record that can be audited if necessary.
Using these paper ballots, each state should be required to perform risk-limiting audits for every federal race to ensure that computer results are accurate.
Federal agencies should work with states to assess cybersecurity threats and plan how each state will manage voting equipment and elections. Each state should practice how they will respond to attacks now, before the elections, so they will be prepared to act quickly and appropriately if attacks occur.
I think this call to action applies to federal and state legislators. Feel free to call them all!
2. But Their Emails!
In a story dropped by Politico on Sunday, (http://www.politico.com/…/jared-kushner-private-email-white…) six senior presidential aides, including Jared Kushner were found using private emails for official White House matters. This may sound familiar to you because Hillary Clinton was endlessly eviscerated last year for doing the same thing. Tell me, why can’t I find this on the front page of every newspaper? Will Fox New be in an outrage about this? The answer is no. The wording in this Fox article is quite interesting.http://www.foxnews.com/…/kushner-used-personal-email-for-so…Remember, VP Pence and Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach were also found to be using their private emails for official business. I don’t have a specific call to action for this, but if you have a member of Congress that was particularly vocal about Hillary Clinton and her emails you may want to call and see if they have an opinion on this as well. Hypocrisy at its finest.
3. A Little Good News
Senator Susan Collins announced on Monday that she will vote “no” on the Graham-Collins healthcare bill. (http://www.cnn.com/…/graham-cassidy-health-care-…/index.html) That’s three no’s right now, enough to keep the bill from passing. Do a little happy dance then get back on those phones. This won’t be over until September 30th. Nice resisting everyone. A special shout out goes to ADAPT and the protesters at the Graham-Cassidy hearing in Washington DC yesterday. You are amazing. http://www.npr.org/…/in-hearing-sens-graham-and-cassidy-def…

Monday 9/25 Call to Action

Monday 9/24

I can't keep up with the news this weekend, so please pardon me if I miss anything.  It looks like I'm going to spend some time on the phone this weekend.  I'll try to put them in order of most to least actionable...

1. Graham-Cassidy TrumpCare ain't sunk yet.  If you have a Republican representative, I'd say start calling them: if this thing does pass the Senate, there's going to be a very small window for the House to also pass it.

If you can, make some calls to left-wing voters.  I've been trying to do this during the day when I get a few minutes, because you can connect them directly to their senators' office, but I think the lines are open from 9am to 9pm.

https://www.trumpcareten.org/calls-to-kill-trumpcare

2. Puerto Rico has been devastated.  From the Indivisible Guide: Ask "your members of Congress to support immediate federal aid to Puerto Rico and Nydia Velazquez's request for a waiver of the Jones Act. The Jones Act requires any supplies/resources to Puerto Rico to arrive by U.S. flag ships. It makes it much more expensive to transport supplies and other resources to Puerto Rico. A waiver would add flexibility to recovery efforts."

http://www.reuters.com/article/us-storm-maria/weakened-dam-looms-as-latest-threat-to-puerto-rico-after-hurricane-idUSKCN1BZ0AY?il=0

3. There are a couple bills to call about.  Thanks to a local Indivisible member for providing this information.

Some members of the House Ways and Means Committee have significant concerns about two bills this week. H. R. 2824 and a connected bill, H. R. 2792. See excerpts of the dissenting view for both committee reports below.

Press release from the Committee on Ways and Means, September 14, 2017:
“The Ways and Means Committee yesterday approved two pieces of legislation to extend funding for the Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visiting (MIECHV) program – a program that has earned bipartisan support because it uses evidence-based solutions to help low-income children and families escape the cycle of poverty and climb the economic ladder:
- The Increasing Opportunity and Success for Children and Parents through Evidence-Based Home Visiting Act (H.R. 2824), sponsored by Human Resources Subcommittee Chairman Adrian Smith (R-NE), which reauthorizes the MIECHV program, and
- The Control Unlawful Fugitive Felons Act (H.R. 2792), sponsored by Reps. Kristi Noem (R-SD) and Sam Johnson (R-TX), which offsets the costs of reauthorizing the MIECHV program by prohibiting individuals with outstanding arrest warrants for a felony or parole violation from receiving monthly Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments.”

4. There's a new Muslim ban.  It came out just now, so I haven't absorbed a lot of information yet.  There is a protest 10/10.

https://www.nomuslimbanever.com/
http://www.politico.com/story/2017/09/24/trump-travel-ban-iran-korea-syria-243078

5. Trump criticized football players for kneeling during the national anthem.  I'm not a football fan, but football players have been kneeling through the national anthem to protest oppression of black and people of color.  I'm not sure what the action item here is, other than "don't do nothing."  Perhaps some of you will have better ideas in the comments.

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/24/sports/nfl-trump-anthem-protests.html

6. If I missed something, I'm sorry.  Let me know in the comments -- there's just so much.

Friday 9/22 Call to Action

Friday
Let’s see if I can find a fresh spin on the flaming turd that is ACA repeal. Let’s be real. The GOP doesn’t care what’s in the Graham-Cassidy bill, they just want to please their donors and get rid of Obamacare.
Here are some more ideas of actions you can take to help prevent the G-C bill from passing in the Senate.
1. On Monday, September 25th, the one and only hearing on the G-C bill will take place in the Senate. Would you or an organization you represent like to include your views in the hearing record? Submit a typewritten, single-spaced statement (no more than 10 pages). You must include the title and date of the hearing and you or your organization’s address on the first page of the statement. Email the committee here: GCHcomments@finance.senate.gov or mail comments here: Senate Committee on Finance, Attn. Editorial and Document Section, Rm. SD-219, Dirksen Senate Office Bldg., Washington, DC 20510-6200. After you are finished submitting it to the Senate, consider sending it to your local paper as well.
2. Help encourage constituents from critical states to contact their senators. Sign up here to be connected to voters in other states. Urge them to voice their opposition to the G-C bill. https://www.trumpcareten.org/calls-to-kill-trumpcare
3. Is your member of Congress a liar? Are his/her pants on fire? ProPublica is looking for people to help fact-check the information that members of Congress are sending to their constituents regarding the repeal of the ACA. If you’ve got the goods, let ProPublica know by filling out this form here.https://www.propublica.org/…/help-us-fact-check-members-of-…
4. Watch President Barack Obama speak at the Gates Foundation. (I miss you!!!)
A short version: https://www.washingtonpost.com/…/07ccc002-9e2d-11e7-b2a7-bc…

5. Watch Jimmy Kimmel talk about Graham Cassidy and his health care bill.
Part one: https://youtu.be/cOlibbx5sx0
Part two: https://youtu.be/wB5Hek7Z2b8
Stop FCC Chairman Ajit Pai
FCC Chairman, Ajit Pai has been the topic of many calls to action in the past. His efforts to destroy net neutrality http://www.startribune.com/franken-open-internet-advocat…/…/
and his support of the Sinclair Broadcasting/Tribune Media merger http://www.salon.com/…/fcc-exploits-loophole-to-push-massi…/ are both cause for alarm. Senator Al Franken has been a vocal thorn in Mr. Pai’s side. Pai needs to be reconfirmed by the Senate by the end of the year in order to maintain his current position. Let’s call our senators, specifically Sen. Klobuchar, and tell them you oppose Pai’s reconfirmation.

Thursday, 9/21 Call To Action

Thursday, 9/21 Call To Action

1. Graham-Cassidy Healthcare bill. We are still calling about this! It is said to be the most radical bill yet. This bill takes money from states that did a good job of getting people covered under the ACA and gives that money to states that did not. It cuts Medicaid expansion for lower income enrollees.  Under this repeal 32 million people would lose coverage. This bill gets rid of the individual mandate to purchase coverage. This is a disaster and we have to continue to be loud about it!

2. Iran Nuclear Deal. “The accord, reached in 2015, required Iran to curb its nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of international sanctions. Under United States law, Mr. Trump has until Oct. 15 to certify whether Iran is complying and the deal remains vital to America’s national security. While he has done so twice since taking office, he has signaled that he will refuse to do so again. That by itself would not abrogate the deal, but would give Congress 60 days to reimpose sanctions on Iran, an action that would mean an end to the agreement, at least for the United States. Mr. Trump may see decertification, or the threat of it, as leverage to press Iran and the other powers to restart talks. He could offer to certify for another 90 days if other parties agreed to explore new negotiations.” Rolling back sanctions has been a relief to the Iranian economy and it’s people. This deal is accountability for Iran, and if we pull out what does that say about us to our allies? How can we count on them during this troubling time we are having with North Korea? Trump, the Art of The Deal. Call your representative and let them know the U.S. should enforce this agreement.

3. Judicial nominations. This is borrowed from D.H. Stacking the courts with right wing justices is one of the goals of the Far Right Extremists, and Trump is making every effort to do so. Both Senators Franken and Klobuchar are on the Senator Judiciary committee. Please contact our Senators to Oppose the following Judicial Nominations.
Stephen Schwartz, who has defended North Carolina's racist voter-ID law, argued that BP was not liable for the Deepwater Horizon spill, and represents Louisiana as it tries to defend its anti-abortion laws(3)
Allison Eid, who is in favor of illegally gerrymandered Congressional districts, has argued for police to have limitless power to search without a warrant, and for public dollars to finance religious public schools(4)
Joan Larsen, who believes in extensive presidential powers and would be unlikely to check Trump when he acts above the law, and who, as a Michigan judge, refused to allow visitation rights to same-sex parents.

4. If you have had those south of us on your mind and hearts due to the catastrophic hurricanes and earthquakes and would like to give, here are a couple options.
