Wednesday 5/29 Call to Action

Wednesday 5/29
Robert Mueller Breaks His Silence
Tune in at 10 am today if you can to hear Special Counsel Robert Mueller make a statement. He will not be taking questions. This makes my stomach ache. What’s he going to say?

An Opponent for Lindsey Graham
As you probably know the senator from South Carolina, Lindsey Graham, has gone cray-cray for Trump. Luckily, someone has stepped up to challenge his Senate seat in 2020. Jaime Harrison, former Chair of the SC Democratic Party, formally announced his candidacy. Why not check him out and donate to his campaign. Go Jaime, go!

Minnesota GOP
Republicans in the Minnesota Senate were united in obstruction and stonewalling during the past legislative session. Many important bills (like making insulin affordable and gun safety) were left by the wayside. Now these same Minnesota Republicans are trying to run a social media campaign, touting all the good work they did. Don’t let them get away with it! If you are on social media, check out #mnGOP#mnleg, @mnsrc, @paulgazelka, and let them know what you think.

Tuesday 5/28 Call to Action

1. Minnesota passed a budget.

See the link for everything that passed, but it includes an education bill, health and human services spending increases, and election security, but no gas tax increase.

https://blogs.mprnews.org/capitol-view/2019/05/legislature-passes-48-billion-budget-ends-special-session/

2. Minnesota will have a primary for president this year, on Super Tuesday: March 3, 2020.  The process will be different than before:

"How will I be able to vote in the presidential nomination primary?

Registered voters will be able to vote at their polling place on presidential primary day or by absentee up to 46 days before presidential primary day (January 17, 2020). A voter must state which party's ballot they want and will be given a ballot containing only that party's candidates. If you refuse to select a party, you will not be able to vote in the presidential nomination primary."

https://www.sos.state.mn.us/elections-voting/how-elections-work/presidential-primary/

3. "President Donald Trump has ordered all major US intelligence agencies to assist Attorney General William Barr in his review of surveillance issues surrounding Trump's 2016 presidential campaign, delegating significant authority to Barr to declassify sensitive intelligence materials as the attorney general sees fit."

Friday 5/24

Friday 5/24

Governor Walz has called for a special session starting today at 10 am. Here’s how a special session works.

Here’s what legislators are trying to get through.

Minnesota State Legislature

President Trump on Thursday unveiled a $16 billion bailout for farmers hurt by his trade war with Beijing, signaling a protracted fight ahead that is already prompting some American companies to shift business away from China.”
“China’s tariffs against products like soybeans and beef and a recent move to cancel a major pork order have hit swing states, including Iowa, Ohio and Wisconsin, especially hard.”

Children should not be dying in detention centers. Children should not be in detention centers. We need to hold this administration accountable.

Monday 5/20 Call to Action

Monday

Minnesota has a budget.

"Overall spending for the next two years is to come in at $48.3 billion, compared to the Walz request of $49.3 billion and the GOP plan of $47.7 billion. Without a tax hike, that number will be met with the use of $491 million from state reserve accounts."

Read the rest:

https://www.minnpost.com/state-government/2019/05/it-was-a-draw-state-budget-deal-includes-extension-of-provider-tax-no-gas-tax-increase/

It appears there will be a one-day special session.

https://www.ksfy.com/content/news/Special-510141301.html

Are you feeling patriotic enough to support Trump's trade war?  This might be an interesting conversation with your conservative friends.

"Trump will have to appeal to Americans' national pride, and even their patriotism, to succeed in leveling the playing field with China. That's because virtually every American is likely to feel an impact if Trump's tariffs go forward on just about everything imported from China. He will have to persuade Americans that what's at stake transcends their own interests."

https://www.npr.org/2019/05/20/724357301/in-trumps-trade-war-americans-will-be-asked-to-show-economic-patriotism

Finally, more evidence of obstruction.

"Michael Flynn told special counsel Robert Mueller that people connected to the Trump administration or Congress had contacted him, potentially attempting to influence his willingness to help prosecutors, newly unsealed court records show."

Friday 5/17 Call to Action

Friday 5/17

These are dark days. There are extreme efforts across the country trying to strip women of their reproductive health. What happens when a country bans abortion? Romania outlawed abortions in 1966 and it created a dystopian horror of overcrowded, filthy orphanages, and thousands of women died from back-alley abortions.

When you limit women’s access to reproductive healthcare, you impede their economic development, and decrease their opportunities for success. And by this undertaking, you limit the number of women willing to lean in and participate in the political process. This should never be up to politicians. Ever. These decisions are for the women, their families, and their doctor.
If you are looking for updates on what is happening with these bans, or would like to host an event to protest what these politicians are doing to women, sign up here:

Trump’s pick for ICE director says, “He can tell which migrant children will become gang members by looking into their eyes.” I am so sick of all of this hateful rhetoric. “Morgan’s comment echoed statements by President Donald Trump. During an event last year in Long Island, N.Y., Trump said unaccompanied minors “look so innocent,” but aren’t in reality.” The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs has not yet scheduled a confirmation hearing, but we can not let this guy go under our radar without a fight. https://www.politico.com/story/2019/05/16/mark-morgan-eyes-ice-director-1449570

How can activists fight back as ICE sows fear in immigrant communities? Check out this great article for Teen Vogue on what you can do. Hennepin County is a sanctuary county, but we have immigrants that live statewide. https://www.teenvogue.com/story/how-to-fight-back-against-ice
Keep pressuring your MoC to defund hate.

Here is what is happening at the state level. Time is running out on a deal. Constitutionally the House and Senate are required to adjourn the regular legislative session by midnight on Monday.“Call and let them know we expect schools and healthcare to be fully funded, that we want to long term plan to pay for infrastructure, and we will not accept a budget that leaves Minnesotans behind.”

Former FBI, Justice Department and NSC, and Pentagon officials team up to suggest questions Congress should ask Mueller. “We now suggest the questions below for Congress to ask Special Counsel Mueller as he breaks his silence and offers congressional testimony.  We offer these questions as an addition to the 60 questions posed by the 10 Democratic members of the Senate Judiciary Committee. We believe there is very little overlap between the two lists, and we offer ours as a supplement.”

Call to Action 5/15

Wednesday 5/15
Republicans Behaving Badly-The Saga Continues.
The GOP is on a rampage.

Alabama
Alabama lawmakers just passed a law banning almost all abortions, with no exceptions for cases of rape or incest. Doctors who perform an abortion for any reason other than the pregnant person's life being at risk could face up to 99 years in prison.
The Alabama bill comes on the heels of a wave of heartbeat” bills that ban abortion as soon as a fetal heartbeat can be detected, which can be as early as six weeks. Georgia just passed a bill that would lead to criminal charges for women who seek abortions or miscarry. (What?!)
A sponsor of the Alabama bill (and WOMAN!!) Republican state Rep. Terri Collins, told the Washington Post that while she empathized with survivors of rape and incest, the lack of exceptions for those scenarios was necessary in order to force federal courts to intervene on the bill.
What I’m trying to do here is get this case in front of the Supreme Court so Roe v. Wade can be overturned,” she said.
If you are like me, you are asking yourself, “How did we get here?” The answer is this. Republicans have been playing dirty for years and Democrats have been letting them get away with it.
Republican leaders have been slowly and methodically stripping away and ignoring rules to get their way. In the new abortion ban, Alabama GOP legislatures tried to sneak through the part about denying victims of incest or rape an abortion without a roll-call vote.
Georgia’s own terrible anti-abortion bill was signed by Governor Brian Kemp. He recently came to office under some pretty suspicious circumstances. Remember, he was running for governor and refused to give up his position as Secretary of State. Remember how he disenfranchised (mostly black, poor, Democratic) voters in his very own election?
Think of the Supreme Court which now has a two young, ultra-conservative judges thanks to the fact that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell refused to seat President Obama’s choice, Merrick Garland. McConnell also used the “Nuclear Option” to get Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh in with only a majority in the Senate. McConnell got rid of the “Blue Slip” rule that allowed Senators to object to a judicial nominee from their state. Now our judicial branches being stacked with ultra right-wing, conservative judges who received life-long appointments.
Don’t forget that right now, lots of Congressional subpoenas are being ignored. Some Senators (I’m talking about you, Lindsey Graham) are even saying out loud that it’s okay to ignore them. Scary stuff.
Republicans break the rules time and time again to get what they want. They are leaving a broken government in their path and we have let them do it.

We are not immune here in Minnesota. Why won’t Senate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka and Senator Marry Kiffmeyer allow Minnesota access to $6 million in HAVA money to help keep our elections secure? Why won’t the Republicans in the state Senate compromise on the budgetbill, forcing the legislature into another Special Session?
Check out what I wrote last Wednesday. It’s still relevant because nothing is happening at the Capitol except for a bunch of Republican leaders acting like stubborn babies.

Minnesota
Minnesota’s state legislature has been working on the state’s budget. It’s not been going well due to some major stonewalling by the Republicans. The DFL has created a budget that will maintain revenue as well as raise new revenue for services we need like healthcare, education, transportation. The Democrats came to the table ready to negotiate with the Republicans but instead of working together to come up with a compromise, Republicans simply refuse to raise any new revenue.
Republicans want to take money from our (already underfunded) educations system and healthcare to pay for our crumbling infrastructure.

Here are some of the trouble areas:
Provider tax
This tax on healthcare bills and medical stays helps to pay for MNCare, health insurance for low-income Minnesotans. This tax is set to expire. Democrats want to renew it, the GOP wants to let it expire with no plan on how to replace the money.
Education
The money the GOP wants to provide for education does not even keep up with inflation! Republicans want to take money from Health and Human Services to help pay for budgeting shortfalls.
Transportation
Governor Walz has proposed a gas tax to help pay to improve our terrible roads and bridges. Republicans have put the kibosh on that idea. Republicans want to pay for infrastructure by borrowing money from somewhere else in the budget.
If you want to better understand what’s going on in St. Paul, head to Indivisible Minnesota Legislative Action. They do an excellent job of keeping track of the latest at the Capitol. Read more here and call your state senator. Let them know you expect them to fund our state. At the very least, they should negotiate and behave like adults.

HAVA Money
Senate Republicans are still not allowing Minnesota to access $6 million in federal money for election security. RIDICULOUS. Check out what I wrote in April and make some calls.
Election Security
It’s a fact that election systems in Minnesota were targeted in cyberattacks in 2016. There is no evidence we were compromised, but knowing we were targeted means we must take action. Yet Minnesota is the only state that has not tapped into available federal resources to secure and maintain trust in our electoral systems. The election security funding is being held up by Republicans in the Legislature, because Minnesota is one of the few states that require the Legislature to sign off on use of those funds.
Mary Kiffmeyer, the Republican chair of the Senate committee on elections, has dismissed the need for cybersecurity, stating, “People are being hacked all the time. You’re being hacked all the time, I am. This is no big thing.”
Does that cause rage to swell up inside your belly? Just wait. Yesterday there was an important meeting on election security at the Capitol. Not a single Republican showed up. Shame on them.
If you haven’t called, or even if you already have, please take some time today to contact Senators Kiffmeyer and Gazelka as well as your own senator. Let them have a piece of your mind. Looking for more? A letter written to your local paper about this would be a great idea. Grr.
Mary Kiffmeyer 651-296-5655
Paul Gazelka 651-296-4875
Now call your members of Congress and let them know you want them to be strong and do everything they can (including impeachment) to get to the truth of the matter.
We need to get a Democratic majority in the Senate (state and federal) and maintain a majority in the House (state and federal). Start planning now on how you will help make that happen. It’s going to take a lot of volunteer hours to make good change.

Monday 5/13 Call to Action

Monday 5/13

Take a look at this petition, promoting fair redistricting in Minnesota:

"Common Cause Minnesota and our partners are united in demanding a redistricting process that includes all of our voices -- and gives us a seat at the table in determining our political representation.

In Minnesota, elections are supposed to reflect the will of the people, not politicians. We all want our voices to be heard in determining the future of our families and communities.

Add your name today to demand fair redistricting in our state -- sign our petition today!"

https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/add-your-name-fair-redistricting-for-minnesota

"President Trump on Friday raised tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese-made goods. Talks between American and Chinese officials in Washington ended later that day with the two sides still far apart on a number of issues. Markets in the United States fell that day then recovered some ground on the hopes that the trade war could soon end without too much disruption."

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/13/business/global-markets.html

Also, Democrats are being deliberate, but moving toward impeachment.

"More Democrats are warming to the idea that beginning impeachment proceedings could be an option if it's not just about removing Trump from office. Rep. Bill Pascrell, D-N.J., said it's also a formal legal proceeding, which could strengthen Democrats' hand in securing testimony, documents and cooperation from the administration if they continue to stonewall
congressional oversight. "

Friday 5/10 Call to Action

Friday 5/10

Time to put those fighting gloves on for the BWCA. “The Boundary Waters case is emblematic of the Trump administration’s modus operandi: bypass the regulatory process by shortcutting scientific assessment, ignoring local opposition, and bending the law.4 This unsound approach to decision-making has been recognized as such in court, where the Trump administration has only a 6 percent success rate on cases related to the Administrative Procedure Act, which governs the way agencies develop and issue regulations.5 The average success rate of previous administrations in such cases is 70 percent.6
The administration’s brazen disregard for transparency, science, and process in the Boundary Waters issue may ultimately be its undoing, but until the courts weigh in, this incredible wilderness system remains at serious risk of irrevocable damage from the sulfide-ore mining at its doorstep.”

The tariff war between the U.S. and China has escalated. “Trump gave U.S. importers less than five days notice about his decision to increase the rate on the $200 billion category of goods, which now matches the rate on a prior $50 billion category of Chinese machinery and technology goods.”
“Pushing rates to 25% will prove extremely damaging to those companies, and the collateral damage will ripple around the globe. European companies are watching aghast as the U.S. and China play Russian roulette with the world economy.”

“The Trump administration is considering changing the way the government measures poverty, which has anti-poverty groups worried that many low-income individuals will be pushed off assistance programs such as food stamps, Medicaid and Head Start.
The possible change would involve adjusting the poverty line annually using a different inflation measure, one that would result in a slower increase over time.”
Comments on the poverty calculation are being accepted up until June 21 by this administration.

“Nine major companies with headquarters or operations in Minnesota are urging state lawmakers to address climate change as part of final policy and spending negotiations at the Capitol.
While the companies did not specifically endorse the 100 percent carbon-free mandate, they argue in a letter to Walz and state lawmakers that reducing carbon emissions will boost Minnesota's economy by attracting businesses that are already working to address climate change on their own.”

Today is the ERA floor vote in the House. Here’s what you should do: Tell your Rep to vote Yes. Tell your Senator that SF208 should get a hearing in the Senate. Bug these key Senators to give this bill a hearing.
If you can make it to the Capital, check out this event.

It's worth keeping an eye on what John Bolton is doing.

"White House national security adviser John Bolton said in a statement Sunday night that the U.S. is deploying the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group and a bomber task force to the U.S. Central Command region, an area that includes the Middle East."

Robert Mueller is scheduled to testify next week, but:

"President Trump reversed himself on Sunday and said that the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, should not testify before Congress, setting up a potentially explosive confrontation with Democrats over presidential authority and the separation of powers."
