8/31 Call to Action

Thursday 8/31

In the wake of what has happened in Charlottesville, VA, along with other attacks from neo-nazis and white supremacists, it’s time to start calling a spade a spade and label these extremists as terrorists. Thanks to Mark Goldberg for bringing this to our attention. We need to contact our local representatives to support a resolution that would classify these neo-nazis and white supremacists as domestic terrorists. The state of IL has passed and OH will soon be passing this type of resolution. MN needs to step up and do the same. U.S. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein had this to say, “The Department of Justice also remains vigilant about the threat of domestic terrorism,” he said. “Violent domestic extremists have plotted attacks on government buildings, businesses, and houses of worship. They have planned and carried out assassinations of police officers, judges, doctors and civil rights leaders. They have acquired biological and chemical weapons, illegal firearms, and explosives. They have carried out killing sprees that terrorize local communities.”

In the near future the Senate will be voting for the confirmation of the head of the Justice Department’s criminal division. Trump has nominated Brian Benczkowski, a former attorney that worked for Russia’s Alpha Bank. Alpha Bank had a server in Russia that was communicating with a server in Trump Tower during the campaign, and Brian Benczkowski was hired by Alpha Bank to oversee the investigation or “cleanup” of the communications between the two servers. Nothing to see here! This individual would oversee everything from fraud, money laundering, computer fraud, narcotics, child exploitation, organized crime, etc. Shall I go on? To put this in perspective, Robert Mueller was the head of the Justice Department’s criminal division before he became head of the FBI. Brian Benczkowski is only being nominated for this position so that Trump can get away with whatever he wants. Our senators need to hear that Brian Benczkowski is the worst person for this position.

The Secret Service is about broke because Trump is racking up costs going away every weekend to golf at one of his properties. Rep. Adam Schiff plans to “introduce an amendment to an appropriations bill meant to fund the government for fiscal 2018.” Basically the Secret Service wouldn’t have to pay any of Trump’s businesses. You can read about it here.

Does anyone else think it’s completely ridiculous that this wall business is still being discussed considering we have a major natural disaster happening and could use that money to help rebuild our country? It looks like House Republicans are looking to cut $1 billion from disaster accounts to put that money towards the wall. People have lost everything. Not to mention that Mexico has offered to help Houston, and had helped after Katrina, but, the wall. “The pending reduction to the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s disaster relief account is part of a massive spending bill that the House is scheduled to consider next week when lawmakers return from their August recess. The $876 million cut, which is included in the 1,305-page measure’s homeland security section, pays for roughly half the cost of Trump’s down payment on the U.S.-Mexico border wall that the president repeatedly promised Mexico would finance.” Call and raise a huge stink about this!

The White House has taken down many pages on their website that do not agree with the current administration’s views when it comes to facts and research. The latest to be removed is colleges and universities that are under investigation for mishandling sexual assault. From the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, 1 in 5 women and 1 in 16 men are sexually assaulted while in college. Taking down this website means there is no accountability for these universities. We need to speak out.

Wednesday 8/30 Call to Action

Wednesday
Republican Measure to Stop Mueller Probe
1. Representative Ron DeSantis from Florida will be presenting an amendment to the House that will restrict special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation of Trump and his ties with Russia. Rep. DeSantis is proposing that funding for Mueller’s probe should stop six months after passing this amendment. He also wants to prevent Mueller from investigating anything that occurred before June 2015, when Trump began his presidential campaign. This amendment could go on the floor as part of the spending package as soon as next week. Today would be a great time to call your representative and tell him/her that DeSantis’ amendment is terrible. Encourage them to only pass amendments that support Mueller and protect his ability to do his job.

2. DeVry University Official to Run Student Aid Enforcement Office
You may remember that recently for-profit colleges, Globe and Minnesota School of Business saw some legal trouble here in Minnesota for making false claims and fraudulent student loans. (Catch up here:https://www.insidehighered.com/…/wisconsin-profit-re-emerge…)
DeVry University, another for-profit college, saw the same legal troubles for making unsubstantiated job placement claims. (https://www.ed.gov/…/us-department-education-reaches-settle…)
Continuing the alarming trend of appointing the absolute WORST person for the job, the Department of Education has selected a former DeVry University official to run the Student Aid Enforcement Office (SAE). SAE was created by President Obama to address illegal or deceitful actions by colleges, especially in the for-profit sector. Unbelievable.
Senators Klobuchar and Franken were involved in reining in Minnesota’s for-profit schools. Let’s call them and express our concern about this new SAE appointment.
3. Some Good News
Defense Secretary Jim Mattis announced last night that transgender soldiers will be allowed to continue to serve in the military, pending the results of an investigation. While this doesn’t make up for the stress and heartache transgender personnel must be experiencing, as least they know they can keep their jobs for now. https://www.usatoday.com/…/mattis-orders-pentago…/614711001/
The ACLU is suing Trump to stop his ban against transgender soldiers serving their country.

Tuesday 8/29 Call to Action

Tuesday
1. Election Cybersecurity
Seven members (out of 27) of the National Infrastructure Advisory Council have resigned. In a letter, the former members cited the Trump administration's failure to address cybersecurity or respond to the Council’s reports of growing security threats to our elections systems, as their reason for leaving. If you are like me, part of what gets you through these troubling times is the hope for change in 2018 and 2020. If we can’t rely of the integrity of our elections how will this change happen? Now is the time that we contact our senators and representative and insist that election cybersecurity becomes a priority.

2. A Time for Learning and Introspection
The tragic events in Charlottesville were a wake up call for me. I have a lot of learning to do to understand what life is like for so many people in America. Part of our job as resisters is to educate ourselves so that we can become better citizens. Here is what I am focusing on this week:
First, a message from former VP Joe Biden about Charlottesville. A bittersweet reminder of what an actual leader sounds like.
“And in the hours and days after Charlottesville, America’s moral conscience began to stir...
You, me, and the citizens of this country carry a special burden in 2017. We have to do what our president has not. We have to uphold America’s values. We have to do what he will not. We have to defend our Constitution. We have to remember our kids are watching. We have to show the world America is still a beacon of light.”

Monday 8/27

Monday 8/27

Sometimes I have a hard time coming up with stuff to write.  This wasn't one of those weekends.  North Korea fired some missiles.  President Trump pardoned Joe Arpaio.  Hurricane Harvey hit Houston, and may come back for another round.

1. One of the most important programs created under President Obama was the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. The program has allowed close to a million immigrants who arrived in the U.S. at a young age to live and work in the U.S. lawfully. It is one of the most celebrated programs under President Obama—and now Trump is dead set on getting rid of it.  Let's ask our MoCs to co-sponsor S.1615 and H.R. 3591 to maintain DACA.  This is a bipartisan-sponsored bill, so we have a real chance to make an impact.  If your reps are Ellison, or McCollum, you can thank them; they're already cosponsors.

Friday 8/25 Call to Action

Friday
The “Fake News” Movement
Brennan Gilmore, a UVA grad and a Charlottesville resident had the unfortunate luck to be present and filming at the very moment James Fields drove his car into a crowd of people, killing Heather Heyer and injuring 19 others. Mr. Gilmore shared the video clip of the incident with the police first and then the public. It seemed to him (and was in truth) a clear case of violence perpetuated by a racist hate group. Mr. Gilmore’s decision to release this video and state the truth of what happened has created troubling consequences for himself and his family. This article outlines the almost instant and severe backlash he has received from hate groups. This article also points out that Sean Hannity (Fox), Alex Jones (Info Wars) and even elected officials have twisted this story and spout conspiracy theories that blame Mr. Gilmore, anti-racist protesters, Democrats, and Antifa for violent acts like the one in Charlottesville. Here’s a quote from the article:
“Over the past week, I’ve seen personally the very real damage that these conspiracy theories have on our public discourse. The danger is not necessarily that a large number of people will believe them in their entirety. Instead, it’s that they muddy the waters on issues that should be about right and wrong. This is truly dangerous. If we are to get beyond this current acute manifestation of the cancer of American racism and begin to heal, the right must join with the left to excise the malignancy of white supremacy from our politics and society. Conspiratorial thinking and confusion on what is real make this much harder.”
Here’s a recent interview with Mr. Gilmore on NPR: http://www.npr.org/…/charlottesville-rally-videographer-on-…
This story is not an isolated incident. This tactic of twisting the truth has become rampant in current political discourse. Late last night, Congressman Jason Lewis was testing the waters of disinformation on his “unofficial” Twitter account and Facebook page. He posted this message along with a Fox News article about “well-oiled”, paid left-wing activists. Read below:
Not all of these folks behave this way--but good to see the facade finally being lifted on the ones who do. https://t.co/cJLVM3ZpGD #MN02
How has it come to pass that a large portion of our population cannot discern the truth? How can members of the media and elected officials get away with telling lies? This is an important challenge that we must face head on. Your call to action today is to learn more about this and gain some tools for battling these harbingers of disinformation.

Wednesday 8/23 Call to Action

Wednesday
1. Did you hear that Trump had a campaign rally in Phoenix, Arizona last night? I couldn’t bring myself to watch it so I am going off clips and transcripts today. It sounds like it was more of the same bile, hatred, and lies from the president.
Trump threatened to allow the government to shut down if he did not receive funding for the border wall
Trump hinted that he has or will be pardoning former sheriff Joe Arpaio, who was recently convicted of criminal contempt for detaining people because he suspected them to be undocumented immigrants. https://www.vox.com/…/2017/8/22/16151256/trump-pardon-arpaio
He called Arizona’s U.S. Senators, John McCain and Jeff Flake thugs.
He used rhetoric to continue to divide America
Today would be a good day to contact your representative and senators and get their opinion about any of these points. Do your members of Congress (MoC) support allowing a government shut down? Do they agree with pardoning Mr. Arpaio? If they haven’t already (Reps. Lewis and Emmer), why won’t they speak out about Trump’s support of Neo-Nazis, racists and white nationalists?
Last night’s speech ties in with this call to action from Rogan’s list below:
A resolution to censure Trump has been introduced in the House, with 78 cosponsors: http://politi.co/2wXwD78 While some Republicans have been outspoken against Trump's failure to fully condemn white supremacists from the Charlottesville march, zero Republicans have cosponsored the resolution so far. Let's contact our representative and make sure that they cosponsor and support H.Res. 496: Condemning and censuring President Donald Trump. 5Calls has a call script and phone number we can use: https://5calls.org/issue/recMfNw76XvEO833U
2. A New Health Care Idea
Hawaii Senator Brian Schatz has proposed a new health care idea. He would like to see Medicaid expanded to allow more Americans to enroll. Each state will be able to choose how broad this coverage will be. This could eventually parlay into single payer. Read more here: https://www.vox.com/…/…/16171160/schatz-health-care-medicaid It is not so much this particular health care plan that I am excited about but the fact that the Democrats are finally proposing ideas instead of just opposing the GOP’s health care. Let’s call our senators and let them know we would like to see more of this.
3. From Rogan’s List
More than 200 U.S. mayors have joined the Anti-Defamation League and United States Conference of Mayors in a new initiative to fight extremism and bigotry in America. Let’s make sure our mayors sign on, too. https://mayorscompact.org/
Here is a list of Minnesota’s elected officials who have signed on so far:
Elizabeth B. Kautz, Burnsville, Minnesota
Emily Larson, Duluth, Minnesota
Nancy Tyra-Lukens, Eden Prairie, Minnesota
Shep Harris, Golden Valley, Minnesota
Betsy Hodges, Minneapolis, Minnesota
Ardell F. Brede, Rochester, Minnesota
Jake Spano, St. Louis Park, Minnesota
Chris Coleman, St. Paul, Minneosta

Tuesday, 8/22 Call to Action

Tuesday
1. Sam Clovis
(I can’t remember if we’ve had this for a call to action. If we have, it bears repeating.)
Continuing Trump’s theme of choosing the absolute worst person for the job, Sam Clovis-former right-wing talk radio show host, climate change denier, and certainly not a scientist has been tapped by Trump to be the chief scientist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
https://www.forbes.com/…/reject-this-incompetent-trump-ap…/…
Now it has been discovered that Mr. Clovis stated on his radio show that homosexuality is a choice and that supporting same-sex marriage could lead to pedophilia.
https://amp.cnn.com/…/kfile-sam-clovis-lgbt-comm…/index.html
This is not the person we need to make important research based decisions for the United States. The Senate must approve Mr. Clovis’ appointment. In 2008, Congress passed a bill requiring chief scientists to be “distinguished scientists with specialized or significant experience in agricultural research, education and economics.” Mr. Clovis does not have the resume for this job. Today, let’s call our senators and tell them so.
2. Bannon’s Out (But Not Really)
Remember the short lived wave of excitement you felt last Friday when Steve Bannon was ousted from the White House? Now that Bannon will be returning to his flock at Breitbart News, there is a nagging question of whether he will do more damage on the outside with the knowledge he gleaned on the inside.
As this article from August 2016 states, Breitbart has been an online hot spot for white nationalists (racists) for a while. http://www.motherjones.com/…/stephen-bannon-donald-trump-a…/ Since the events in Charlottesville, the consequences of this hateful rhetoric are now clear to us.
While the first amendment protects publications like Breitbart, it does not prevent us from asking advertisers to pull their ads from the web site. A magical thing has come out of this realization: Sleeping Giants. Sleeping Giants is a powerhouse movement that has made its mark by asking advertisers to pull their adds from Breitbart. It has been wildly successful. According to this article from the Chicago Tribune, as of this June Breitbart had lost 90% of its advertisers in two months!
http://www.chicagotribune.com/…/ct-breitbart-advertisers-20…
Sleeping Giants is successful because everybody can help out. It’s simple; all you need is a computer, the internet and a twitter account. Then follow these simple steps here:https://twitter.com/slpng_giants/status/809563352204591105
This is a perfect call to action for introverts like me.
3. Finally, from Rogan’s List:
On Tuesday, August 22nd, Teaching Tolerance, the American Federation of Teachers, the Anti-Defamation League, and Facing History, will be hosting a webinar, "When Hate is in the Headlines: Resources for K-12 Educators." The webinar will discuss "the so-called alt-right, the history of hate and white supremacy, how to talk about race and religion, memorials and monuments, the First and Second amendments, and the emotional impact on our students. “We can sign up for the webinar, then check out the included resources http://bit.ly/2v3Wc57 Those of us who are educators can also receive one hour of professional development credit for attending the webinar, as well as completing the poll questions and survey (please see registration page for details).
