Tuesday 7/31 Call to Action

Tuesday
1, The Final Stretch
This is it. We are in the final stretch before the midterm elections. It cannot be overstated how important it is that Democrats get elected in November. Every person needs to commit to helping increase voter turnout. Multiple studies have shown that personal contact with voters is the key to encouraging them to participate. Taking time to connect with someone fact to face (or almost as good-on the phone) can be enough to cause many people who never voted in the past to see themselves anew, as the sorts of people who regularly go to the polls on Election Day. In turn, voting even once can become habit forming, reinforcing self-identification as “a voter” long after the initial conversation with a canvasser. What is more, voter contacts have strong spillover effects within households, boosting participation by others as much as 60 percent. Largely regardless of the message, personal contact with reluctant voters — even once, but especially repeatedly — can shape the electorate dramatically. https://www.washingtonpost.com/…/how-to-mobilize-reluctan…/…
What’s the takeaway? Now is the time to volunteer with a campaign to canvass. Push yourself out of your comfort zone these next three months. Share your enthusiasm for the DFL with others in Minnesota communities. You can rest easy at night knowing that you are doing your best to take back this country.

Study after study shows that the most effective way to get people to vote is by having conversations with them in the four days before Election Day (Saturday, November 3rd–Tuesday, November 6th). Volunteer here to be part of the last big push. https://thelastweekend.org/?source=MN02
#StandOnEveryCorner
Join your neighbors to stand up against Trump and his terrible administration. #StandOnEveryCorner encourages all of us to get out in our communities and speak out about what’s happening in the U.S. right now. It’s simple and easy. Grab a sign and find a participating corner near you. Better yet, create your own corner and encourage others to join you. Or here: http://www.startribune.com/new-hyperlocal-political-forc…/…/

2, 3D Printed Guns
After reaching a settlement with the federal government, Defense Distributed, a Texas-based company, has won the right to make and disseminate 3D gun blueprints — including a single-shot pistol called "The Liberator," an AR-15 lower receiver, and a complete Beretta M9 handgun. What this means is that anyone with the correct technology can create weapons anonymously in the comfort of their homes. Some of these weapons may not be detectable with traditional metal detectors. The salt in the wound is that fact that the federal government reimbursed Defense Distributed $40,000 in legal fees.
Washington state Attorney General Bob Ferguson has asked the court for a nationwide temporary restraining order to bar the administration from allowing this to continue further. He is seeking to prevent Defense Distributed posting the downloadable guns online. Many other Attorneys General have followed suit. Our own AG, Lori Swanson is not one of them. Perhaps today we can encourage her to do so. https://www.npr.org/…/attorneys-general-sue-trump-administr…
Here is the contact information for AG Swanson. Swanson has a questionable history with the NRA. Now that she is running for governor, she should be motivated to take a strong stance against easy access weaponry.

3. The Judiciary
From Rogan’s list:
Last week, the Senate Judiciary Committee approved seven more of Republican regime's judicial nominees, including four to federal appeals courts. Eleventh Circuit nominee Justice Britt Grant was considered in yesterday's (Monday's) full Senate session. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has already cancelled most of the senate's August recess. They will be out the week of Aug. 6 and back to Washington on Monday, Aug. 13. We can anticipate that they will be working to confirm more judicial nominees. Let's read more about the ones that just passed the committee. We need to continue to let our senators know of our opposition to the most extreme nominees.
http://thehill.com/…/390784-mcconnell-cancels-senates-augus…
https://www.courthousenews.com/senate-panel-approves-seven…/
In order to thoroughly vet Brett Kavanaugh as a SCOTUS nominee, it is essential to examine his record from when he served as judge, and also, importantly, in his role as a member of the Bush administration (https://wapo.st/2mTPUT8https://bit.ly/2NX6w8e). This push for transparency is important so that our senators may have a better understanding of Kavanaugh and whether he is the best person to serve on our Supreme Court. Let's make sure that we are not only calling our own MoC to tell them we support this examination of Kavanaugh's record, but let's also contact the Senate Judiciary Committee to ensure that they fully investigate his record before they decide whether to let the nomination proceed to a full Senate vote. We can find a call script and phone numbers at 5Calls: https://5calls.org/…/judiciary-committee-review-kavanaugh-d…

Monday 7/30 Call to Action

Monday

There are 99 days until general election day, November 6, 2018.

Here are the 5% and 11% "most flippable" and other interesting Minnesota House districts.  Can you donate or help with these campaigns?  Can you donate to the DFL itself so it can allocate the money to the best candidates you haven't heard of?

"First steps! Amplify, social media-fy, donate. Like their FB page and follow on Twitter. Research shows people take people that have large followings more seriously, and it's easy to do! Also spread the word about the endorsed candidates, get to know their issues and spend some time on their pages. Of course, donate if you can. This isn't the time to be under-spent. If you can't donate, start talking. Tweet 'em, Facebook 'em, and old-school chat about 'em with your neighbors!"

https://www.progressivewestand.org/single-post/2018/04/06/THE-PLAN-from-the-GRASSROOTS-MN-State-House-of-Reps

There's also *one* Minnesota senate election on the ballot, and it's for Michelle Fishbach's seat. It's a tough race, but it would end Republican control of the senate.

1. I made a few comments on how we can act to support candidates, and it's worth repeating here.  Social media can be a tool to divide or unite!

"The folk theory of democracy is the belief system that the voting public supports, elects and embraces candidates who reflect the collective 'wishes and desires' of the people. Extracted from Democracy for Realists; 'the idea that citizens make coherent and intelligible policy decisions, on which governments then act – bears no relationship to how it really works. Or could ever work'." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folk_theory_of_democracy

The way democracy actually works: people look to how people around them (particularly elites and others they respect) are supporting and voting, and how strong that support is. They tend to choose one of the groups to which they belong, and vote the way that group is voting. So, if you're a religious teacher, you might vote with your church, or with your union -- and you might swing back and forth from election to election based on whom you choose to associated with.

Talking about issues is important to win elections, because it helps groups decide whom to support. But it's also critical to push a message of strong support for a party and candidate, to convince members of your group that voting with *your* group, and not some other group, is what they should do.

2. In the Russia probe:
- Paul Manafort's trial starts tomorrow 7/31.
- Michael Cohen claims Trump knew of the Trump Tower meeting with Russian officials.

3. Keep on top of voter disenfranchisement:

"A recent report from the Brennan Center for Justice found that between 2014 and 2016 states purged almost 16 million voters from the rolls, four million more voters than removed from 2006 to 2008."

https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/millions-voters-purged-voter-rolls-2014-2016-report/story?id=56756914

I think it’s going to take an overwhelming wave of blue voters to stop this terrible Trump administration in November. All hands on deck! At this point, you should be helping out a campaign at least once a week. Expect to do more as the midterm elections get closer.

Friday 7/27 Call to Action

Friday
Holy cow! There is so much going on. So, so much.
1. Trump Knew
Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump's former personal attorney, claims that then-candidate Trump knew in advance about the June 2016 meeting in Trump Tower in which Russians were expected to offer his campaign dirt on Hillary Clinton. Cohen's claim would contradict repeated denials by Trump, Donald Trump Jr., their lawyers and other administration officials who have said that the President knew nothing about the Trump Tower meeting until he was approached about it by The New York Times in July 2017. Cohen alleges that he was present, along with several others, when Trump was informed of the Russians' offer by Trump Jr. By Cohen's account, Trump approved going ahead with the meeting with the Russians, according to sources.
It has been proposed that the message Trump received that day was this: “Hit Hillary Clinton about the missing emails. Hit her hard. Don't stop. People don't like her, people don't trust her, and the email thing confirms their suspicions. That private email server of hers is going to give you the White House.” Remember, shortly after the Trump Tower meeting, Trump tweeted, questioning Hillary Clinton about 33,000 missing emails.
This could spell collusion for Trump, people.
2. A Subpoena for Trump’s Finance Chief
Allen Weisselberg, the longtime financial chief of the Trump Organization, is being subpoenaed to testify before a federal grand jury in the criminal investigation of President Trump's former personal lawyer, Michael Cohen. Weisselberg has been managing the Trump Organization’s finances for years. He may also have been involved with payments to two women who alleged sexual encounters with Trump. He also did Trump’s taxes. Will we finally get a peek at Trump’s tax returns? Stay tuned. Things are heating up.
3. The Hackers Are at It Again
It has been discovered that Russian hackers, similar to those from 2016, attempted to breach the computer systems of Senator Claire McCaskill. This is the first know attempt for this midterm season, but I assure you it will not be the last.
https://www.npr.org/…/russians-unsuccessfully-tried-to-hack…
Pair this with the fact that Republicans in the House refused to renew elections security funding last week.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/…/20761f88-8abb-11e8-8aea-86…
Add to that the fact that in May, the Trump administration eliminated the position of cybersecurity coordinator on The National Security Council.
https://www.nytimes.com/…/te…/white-house-cybersecurity.html
In an attempt to battle bots and troll, Twitter suspended more than 1 million accounts in May and June. It is on pace to do the same in July. This is more than double the suspensions from last year. The hackers are out there trying to wreak havoc on our elections.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/…/twitters-monthly-users-f…/…
4. Migrants Detained at The Border Report Terrible Treatment.
Remember this, the day after all the children were supposed to be (but weren’t) reunited with their families. Shame on the GOP.
https://www.cbsnews.com/…/in-court-filing-migrants-describ…/
What’s the call to action for all of this? Be sure to hold your GOP members of Congress accountable for all these new events. Most importantly, Get Out The Vote! Dedicate yourself to helping Democrats win in Minnesota.

4. Now for Some Good News
Minnesota’s Secretary of State, Steve Simon reported that almost 30,000 absentee ballots have been returned in Minnesota so far. That’s a 151% increase over 2016, and a 227% increase over 2014. Thursday 7/26 Call to Action

Thursday 7/26

Much is happening in the news and this administration has brought nothing but chaos. I’m keeping it simple-ish today. Be kind to yourselves and get outside when you can. You’ll feel better.

1. GOP moves to impeach Rosenstein
As important as it is that we want legislation passed to protect Mueller, we also need to make sure the Rosenstein is protected. Late yesterday Reps. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) and Jim Jordan (R-OH) introduced articles of impeachment.
“Meadows and Jordan's decision to file the articles of impeachment came hours after they huddled with top Justice Department officials at the Capitol to discuss lingering demands for documents. Other lawmakers in the meeting had described progress and rejected the notion of impeaching Rosenstein, but Meadows and Jordan said they remained dissatisfied.”
Time to let your MOC know how you feel about this and let the DOJ do its job.

2. ICE and the Hennepin County sheriff’s race
Stanek’s office asks the people it books their birthplace; if they were born outside the United States, he sends their information and fingerprints to an agency that shares them with ICE. Stanek also arranges calls between ICE and foreign-born detainees, reportedly without telling them of their right to refuse. Local officials have criticized these practices, and the county commission recently approved a plan to better inform immigrants of their rights and provide them legal representation. Stanek’s detention policies have also drawn attention: He informs ICE before releasing certain immigrants. Although he doesn’t honor ICE detainer requests out of concern that they are illegal under current law, he has worked with the Trump administration on new plans to facilitate the transfer of undocumented immigrants into ICE’s hands. “We want to find a way to say yes,” he said in 2017 of ICE detainer requests.”

3. Family Unification deadline
Congressional Republicans have quietly introduced a provision into H.R. 6470—an appropriations bill introduced on Tuesday for the Departments of Education, Health and Human Services, and Labor—that would eliminate such requirements for immigration detention facilities used to detain children and families. The resolution could remove vital safeguards protecting standards of care for migrant children currently held in state- and county-operated detention facilities, including in three ICE-contracted family detention centers currently running without a state license.
The result could create “an illegal black hole” where abuse and poor conditions inside detention centers would flourish, attorney David Bennion, executive director of the Free Migration Project, told The Daily Beast. “You’ll be taking away the only regulatory agency that is putatively engaged on the issue.”

4. Let’s Get out The Vote!

Wednesday 7/25 Call to Action

Wednesday
1. Helsinki- One Week Later
Yesterday, the House Democrats pushed a resolution denouncing Trump’s behavior in Helsinki.  The new resolution, although nonbinding, is their latest attempt to get the House on the record affirming Congress’s commitment to liberal democracies — like those composing the NATO alliance — above hostile autocracies like Putin’s Russia.“This is a very important and pivotal moment for our country,” Pelosi told reporters Monday evening in the Capitol. “We cannot appear to endorse what the president is doing by our silence.”  http://thehill.com/homenews/house/398473-house-dems-press-resolution-denouncing-trump-in-wake-of-helsinki  Let’s tell our representatives that we agree.  None of us can be silent.

During the question and answer period at the meeting between Trump and Putin in Helsinki last week, journalist Jeff Mason asked the following: “President Putin, did you want President Trump to win the election? And did you direct any of your officials to help him do that?”
Here’s Putin’s answer: “Yes, I did. Yes, I did. Because he talked about bringing the U.S.-Russia relationship back to normal.”
Wow, right? That reflects pretty badly on Trump doesn’t it? Here’s the problem. Official transcripts from the White House have changed Mason’s question. They have removed the first half of the question where Mason asked, Putin if he wanted Trump to win the election. So sneaky! It amazes me that this has essentially flown under the Radar. It’s a testament to the barn fire that is our country right now.
Or watch Rachel Maddow’s take on it here: http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow/watch/trump-white-house-cuts-putin-support-for-trump-out-of-transcript-1284716611545 via @msnbc
This seems like a really good thing to make some noise about. Why not tweet, call, or email your members of Congress and see what they think? Don’t forget Resistbot( https://resistbot.io/) is a great way to contact them if you are sick and tired of calling.
2. $$Trump and The Fiscally Conservative GOP$$
From my friends at Rogan’s List: Trump's upcoming self-aggrandizing military parade is estimated to cost taxpayers 12 million dollars (http://fortune.com/2018/07/18/trumps-military-parade-cost-taxpayers-12-million-report/) and his unnecessary repainting of Air Force One to red, white and blue is estimated to cost 3.9 million dollars of our money (https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2018/07/18/donald-trump-air-force-one-red-white-and-blue-cost-3-9-billion/794735002/).   Add in the ever-increasing and unexpected cost of Trump’s “zero tolerance” policy (https://www.bna.com/zero-tolerance-immigration-b73014477161/) and we see so much of our taxpayer dollars that could have been spent on so many other much worthier.  Let’s let our MoCs know where we want these dollars to be spent instead.
These expenses would make excellent topics for tweeting our GOP members of Congress. Those fiscal hawks sure have been silent about all this unnecessary spending.

While you are on the phone why not ask about the $1 trillion that the government is borrowing, an 84% increase from last year. According to the CBO, the increase in borrowing is attributed to the fact that the new tax law has decreased tax receipts. This is the largest jump in borrowing during a non-recession time since Ronald Reagan was president and he was trying to beef up the U. S. military.

3. Don’t Forget The Kids!
Tomorrow is the deadline for returning children (over 5 years old-the deadline for under 5 is long past due) that were separated from their families at the border. Many of those children’s parents have already been deported back to their countries of origin and the outlook for reunification is bleak. I know we are all so very tired, but let’s not forget these kids. This forced separation is causing irreparable damage to them. Today, we can work to put their plight back into the minds of our members of Congress. Make some noise. Make some good trouble. You would hope for the same if these were your children.
