Friday 7/26 Call to Action

Friday 7/26

Yesterday evening the House left for their six week summer recess. Let this be be six weeks of them constantly hearing from their constituents.

Since there are certain Senators who do not want to do their job, it’s time for the American people to start raising roucous. If McConnell doesn’t want to bring a bill to the floor that deals with cyber warfare from Russia, then he and his GOP colleagues are aiding and abetting our adversary. We will not put up with this anymore.
The Senate Intelligence Committee concluded Thursday that election systems in all 50 states were targeted by Russia in 2016, an effort more far-reaching than previously acknowledged and one largely undetected by the states and federal officials at the time.”
Mr. McConnell has held fast to his position despite withering criticism from Democrats, and agitation from some in his party who want the Senate to move more modest, bipartisan legislation. The Democratic proposal, already passed by the House, would have given the states hundreds of millions of dollars in grants, mandated the use of backup paper ballots and required risk-limiting postelection audits.”

These camps need to be shutdown.
Active-duty U.S. troops are now stationed inside the Border Patrol's holding facility in Donna, Texas, and monitoring migrant adults and children from just a few feet away, according to two current and two former defense officials, a move a congressman says comes close to violating a 140-year-old federal law.”
Active-duty troops are barred from performing law enforcement functions inside the U.S. by the Posse Comitatus Act, a federal law enacted in 1878 that prohibits the government from using military forces to act as a police force within U.S. borders.”

There are a growing number of legislators calling to suspend all Polymet permits, while there are those who say Polymet followed the law in obtaining permits. All concerns and questions need to be addressed about the permitting process. There is too much at stake with the environment to just forge ahead, and we deserve the truth.
Opponents of the mining project argue the project could send tainted runoff into the St. Louis River watershed and Lake Superior. Supporters, meanwhile, say the project would bring much-needed jobs to the region.”

Sen. John Marty, the Roseville Democrat leading the effort, said lawmakers were also motivated by Glencore’s recent purchase of PolyMet Mining Corp. and the catastrophic failure earlier in the year of an iron ore mine tailings dam in Brazil, a facility with a similar design to the tailings dam PolyMet would use.”

Twin Metals, a Minnesota company owned by Chilean mining giant Antofagasta Minerals, is closing in on building its new copper mine. The location: Ely, right next to Minnesota’s treasured stretch of silent lakes and untouched wilderness, the Boundary Waters.”

Wednesday July 24
Lots of things are happening today. What else is new.
Robert Mueller to Testify
Former Special Counsel Robert Mueller is testifying before the House Judiciary and Intelligence Committees today. I am not getting my hopes up about it, but at least the public should get a review of what’s in the report since most people (including FBI Director, Christopher Wray!!https://www.politico.com/…/fbi-christopher-wray-mueller-rep… ) have not read it.
Watch it live here: https://www.cpr.org/20…/…/24/video-robert-mueller-testimony/
Former Senator Al Franken has provided a list of questions he would ask Mueller. https://alfranken.com/read/what-id-ask-mueller
What the heck, United Kingdom?
Pro-Brexit Boris Johnson will become Britain’s next prime minister. He is the UK’s version of Trump and I am sure a lot of people are experiencing the same pit in their stomachs that we did in November 2016. https://www.theguardian.com/…/meet-the-new-dude-at-no-10-pa…
Trump’s Expedited Removal
The Trump administration has created a new rule that would allow ICE officers to approach anyone in the United States and demand proof of citizenship or at least two years of residency. If they can’t, they will be deported without a trial or hearing.
The change dramatically expands the ability of the Department of Homeland Security to quickly deport certain immigrants without any of the due-process protections granted to most other people, including the right to an attorney and to a hearing before a judge.

If you don’t think this will really happen, it already has. An 18 year-old U.S. citizen was detained for nearly a month despite having documentation showing his citizenship. https://www.washingtonpost.com/…/francisco-erwin-galicia-…/…
Trump to Weaken SNAP
The Trump administration wants to change the way states determine who qualifies for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, benefits, also known as food stamps. The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that 3 million people would lose their food assistance as a result.
The administration says it wants to close what it calls a "loophole" that allows states to give benefits to those who would not otherwise be eligible by raising or eliminating income and asset limits.

Monday 7/22 Call to Action

If you are looking for something to do, let me point out two options that might be most effective in the election in 2020.

First, you can volunteer for Vote Forward https://votefwd.org/ to send letters with registration forms to increase Democratic registration, to make sure Democrats win races.

Second, you can send postcards with Postcards to Voters https://postcardstovoters.org/ to write the entire state of Florida to encourage voter registration.

Normally I don't pay too much attention to the president's Tweets, but he's going pretty far.

"The political crisis was both familiar and extraordinary — engulfing every aspect of American politics, from the presidential campaign to the White House to Capitol Hill. Many in both parties, well acquainted with Trump’s history of racially charged rhetoric, were stunned at how far he had gone this time. Republicans were fearful of the potential damage but reluctant to confront or contradict Trump. The White House and the Trump campaign sought to contain the furor without alienating key supporters. Democrats finally unified after a week of squabbling to roundly condemn the president."

Friday 7/19 Call to Action

Friday 7/19

To those of you who showed up at the airport to welcome Congresswoman Omar home yesterday- thank you! She needs the support more than ever, and watching that video of you all welcoming her home is giving me hope.
We all need to be Trump’s nightmare, because the majority of us believe like Ilhan does, that “his policies are a nightmare to us.”
At the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, more than 150 people met Omar, showing support for the Democratic congresswoman after the president told her to "go back” to the country from which she came.”

Our Congress is in session 2 more weeks and then they are off from 8/5 thru Labor Day. They need to be hearing from us loudly. Continue to demand they close the concentration camps and defund ICE.
The SPLC and its partners filed a lawsuit and an emergency motion this week seeking to block a new Trump administration rule that categorically bars asylum for migrants who cross the southern border without applying for and being denied asylum in any country that they pass through on their way to the U.S.”

We need accountability from House Democrats.
There are so many things that Trump has done that would be considered impeachable offenses. We need impeachment hearings now.
The documents, released Thursday, describe a “series of calls, text messages, and emails” among Cohen, Trump, Trump campaign aide Hope Hicks, Keith Davidson — an attorney for Daniels, whose legal name is Stephanie Clifford — and David Pecker, an executive of the company that published the National Enquirer.”
““Based on the timing of these calls, and the content of the text messages and emails, I believe that at least some of these communications concerned the need to prevent Clifford from going public, particularly in the wake of the Access Hollywood story,” the agent said.”
“"The conclusion of the investigation exonerating the Trump Organization's role should be of great concern to the American people and investigated by Congress and the Department of Justice," Cohen said.”

Minnesota environmental advocates have charged that top officials at the EPA in effect suppressed concerns raised by career regulators in the Chicago office, with the result that Minnesota granted PolyMet’s permit without addressing all of their objections. Pierard’s memo includes a chart of 29 EPA concerns, fewer than 10 of which appear to have been completely resolved.”
There are now three separate inquiries into how regulators handled PolyMet’s water quality permit, including one by the EPA’s inspector general and one by Minnesota’s Legislative Auditor. In addition, the Minnesota Court of Appeals decided last month that there was “substantial evidence of procedural irregularities” in how the permit was handled and ordered Ramsey County District Court to investigate.”

These are our adversaries ways of making America great-for them.
The Trump administration over the last two years has undone or diminished numerous programs that were created after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks to help detect and avoid incidents involving weapons of mass destruction (WMD), the Los Angeles Times reported.”
More than 30 current and former Homeland Security employees and contractors told the Times that the changes — including canceled training exercises and the large-scale exodus of scientists and policy experts — have put U.S. citizens at higher risk for chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear attacks.”

We need to tell our Senators that Eugene Scalia is unfit to be the Labor Secretary.
“Eugene Scalia is quietly freeing big banks from the rules meant to keep them from crashing the economy again.”

"President Donald Trump used racist language on Sunday to attack progressive Democratic congresswomen, falsely implying they weren't natural-born American citizens.

Trump did not name who he was attacking in Sunday's tirade but earlier this week he referenced New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez when the President was defending House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. "

Trump’s Concentration Camps #TrumpCamps
The inspector general from the Department of Homeland Security released a scathing report about the conditions of the detention centers in Texas. https://int.nyt.com/…/2dd9d40be6a6b0cd3…/optimized/full.pdf…
The report detailed overcrowded, squalid conditions.
Children are being held without beds, clean clothes, showers, hot meals, oh, and their families. Children are not supposed to be held in these facilities for longer than 72 hours. This rule is not being followed and many children have been held for much longer.
Some detainees are being kept in a cell so crowded that there is only room to stand. They are forced to do this for a week. Can you imagine the torture of not being able to sit or lie down for days? Others have been held for a month in concrete cells with no furniture and limited access to restrooms and potable water.
The nutrition is so bad (there are reports of only having bologna sandwiches to eat) that detainees are suffering from constipation and mouth sores.
Detainees are being denied their prescribed medications, even for life-threatening diseases like epilepsy. People inside the camps are denied medical care even though there are groups of doctors outside the camps willing to help.
Communicable diseases like influenza and lice infestations are spreading because of the crowded conditions.
Detainees are seen clamoring and begging for release, some with signs and notes asking for help.
At least six children have died inside these camps.
To make matters worse, ProPublica discovered a secret Facebook group of current and former Border Patrol agents that features posts that joke about migrant deaths, as well as sexist memes and threats towards members of Congress. “One member's reaction to the news of a 16-year old dying in custody: “If he dies, he dies.” Another member's reaction to the photo of a father and his baby daughter dead face down in the Rio Grande river: "have y'all ever seen floaters this clean?" https://www.propublica.org/…/secret-border-patrol-facebook-…
Representative Frederica Wilson is concerned about the treatment of detained adolescent girls. She attempted to go to see the girls in the camps but was prevented entry. https://www.rawstory.com/…/i-dont-trust-people-with-adoles…/
The Judiciary Oversight Committee is planning on having hearings next week over the conditions of these camps.
Trump has announced plans to begin raids, nationwide to deport undocumented families.

In case you were wondering, it appears that Minnesota’s GOP is totally on board with housing asylum seekers in concentration camps.
Please don’t stop making noise about this atrocity at our border. Tomorrow, as we celebrate Independence Day, please think about how this country was founded and built with the help of immigrants. Think about our history, and how we’ve mistreated Native Americans, African Americans, and Japanese Americans in the past. Let’s not repeat those mistakes.

Trump Hijacking July 4th Celebrations
Trump has decided to hijack Independence Day celebrations at the Nation’s Capital and make it a campaign rally for himself, including a parade of tanks, fighter jet flyovers, and VIP tickets that the RNC will hand out to big campaign donors. Trump’s pageant will cost millions of dollars and we taxpayers get to foot that bill.
To help pay for Trump’s day honoring himself. The National Park Service will be diverting nearly $2.5 million intended to help improve parks.

Census Citizenship Question- a win for the good guys!
The Trump administration has decided to print the 2020 census forms without a citizenship question, and the printer has been told to start the printing process, Justice Department spokesperson Kelly Laco confirms to NPR. https://www.npr.org/…/trump-administration-to-print-2020-ce…

"A crowd estimated at more than 1,000 people gathered in south Minneapolis on Sunday to protest the Trump administration's immigration and border policies.

From the Kmart parking lot at the corner of Nicollet and Lake, they marched — waving banners and cardboard signs, and spanning two city blocks at a time — to the First Universalist Church of Minneapolis.

Once there, speakers shared their stories and spoke against the separation of families, threats of deportation and other federal actions that have made headlines for months. President Trump has made stricter immigration and border control a signature issue of his campaign and presidency."
