Friday 9/28 Call to Action

Friday
SCOTUS Hearing
Were you glued to your television yesterday? Maybe you were like me, stuck at work trying to follow on Twitter while members of the Senate Judiciary Committee questioned Dr. Christine Blasey Ford and Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. However you watched it, you must agree that yesterday’s hearing was remarkable. I was struck by Dr. Ford’s intelligence, sincerity, and bravery to stand and tell her truth. Kavanaugh on the other displayed some disturbing behavior that tells me he does not have mental and ethical fortitude to have a lifetime appointment to the highest court. Republicans on the committee had man tantrums and broke norms in a desperate attempt to push through Trump’s nominee.
Rachel Maddow had a great recap of the day on her show. Watch it here: https://youtu.be/ipyym0x_Woc Basically the entire front page of the Washington Post is about the hearings. Read that here: https://www.washingtonpost.com/
Republicans on the Senate Judicial Committee have decided to vote for Kavanaugh this morning at 9:30 eastern (that’s 8:30 for Minnesota). The only member of the committee that might have been wavering was Senator Jeff Flake form Arizona. Feel free to send him a tweet this morning (@jeffflake) and let him know what you think. The entire Senate will vote on Kavanaugh’s confirmation Saturday morning. Unbelievable.
Here in Minnesota there is not much to be done. Senator Klobuchar has proven time and again during this process that she is fighting for us. Senator Smith is a definite “No” as well. You could tweet at Senators Collins and Murkowski and let them know what you think.
The best thing you can do is to help better candidates win in November. Turn your anger and frustration about this unfair hearing into good by canvassing, phone banking, post card writing, etc. Think of this as the sprint at the end of the race. Push yourself out of your comfort zone. Do as much as you can to help.
Just do it. Volunteer. Help change the landscape in Washington and at the Capitol in St. Paul.
Do you have the day off from work? Join your neighbors at Senators Klobuchar and Smith’s offices to protest Kavanaugh’s nomination and let the world know that we believe survivors. The event will go from 12-3 today. Learn more here: https://www.facebook.com/events/1829956740416069/
Angie Craig and Jason Lewis to Debate
Calling all residents of congressional district 2. Candidate Angie Craig and Representative Jason Lewis will be having their first public debate on October 25th Those of you who live in CD2 know how amazing it is that Lewis is actually appearing in public in front of his constituents. This NEVER happens. He must be scared about the election in November. Good. If you can, go and support Angie Craig. Learn more here :https://chambermaster.blob.core.windows.net/…/Join-us-for-M…

Thursday 9/27 Call to Action

Thursday 9/27

Today is bound to be an intense news days with the Kavanaugh hearing. And with the slow newsweek (sarcasm) I’m sure I’ve missed some things.

1. More allegations of misconduct against Kavanaugh.
As Dr. Christine Blasey Ford is set to testify to the Senate Judiciary Committee more allegations of sexual misconduct have come forward against Kavanaugh. The logical thing to do would be to have the FBI investigate all of these allegations. https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/supreme-court/senate-probing-new-allegation-misconduct-against-kavanaugh-n913581

Republicans fueled by Evangelicals are ramming this nomination forward so that they can get their man on the Court. Once he is appointed Roe v. Wade will be quickly overturned.
As the Senate mulls the confirmation of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court, anti-abortion judges are wasting no time laying the groundwork for the reversal of Roe v. Wade. Earlier in September, the 8thU.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld two abortion restrictions that are patently unconstitutional under Supreme Court precedent. On Wednesday, the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals pulled the same trick, affirming the legality of an anti-choice Louisiana regulation that’s identical to a law the Supreme Court struck down in 2016.”

Here is Dr. Ford’s opening statement for the Senate Hearing.

You can thank Senator Klobuchar for standing in solidarity with the other Democrats urging Trump to withdraw his nomination of Kavanaugh or reopen the FBI investigation.

2. Trump accuses China of interfering in upcoming election.
U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday accused China of seeking to meddle in the Nov. 6 U.S. congressional elections, saying Beijing did not want his Republican Party to do well because of his pugnacious stance on trade.”

3. LGBT Content removed from Federal Websites.
““We’ve seen a general reduction in the prominence of LGBT content across Health, Labor, Education, Housing—even the White House itself,” Rachel Bergman, co-director of the Sunlight Foundation’s Web Integrity Project, told The Daily Beast. “At best, this is definitely a signal that LGBT concerns have been significantly de-prioritized and, in the worst cases, they’re actively being undermined.”
The Sunlight Foundation is a nonpartisan organization that has been monitoring changes made to federal websites around issues that it deems “politically sensitive” through the Web Integrity Project (WIP). So far, that project has tracked two major LGBT-related changes to federal websites.”

4. Election Security Bill not passed.
“Thanks to the lack of political will in the White House and among congressional Republicans, the bipartisan election security bill will not be passed in time for midterms, meaning that our elections will remain just as vulnerable to cyberattacks as they were during the 2016 presidential race.”

Tuesday 9/25 Call to Action

Tuesday
1. More Tax Cuts
A big thank you to MN02 Congress Watch (http://mn02congresswatch.org/). These smarties keep track of what’s going on in Congress so I don’t have to.
Soon, the House will be considering three new tax cut bills. Individually, these bills seem benign, but we must remember that each bill represents a loss of revenue and more debt for our future generations to carry. The current Republican-lead Congress seems to have thrown fiscal responsibility to the wind. Last year’s Tax Cuts And Jobs Act could raise the deficit over $1 trillion. These bills will simply pile more debt onto an already insurmountable problem.
The Family Savings Act H.R. 6757 (https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/115/hr6757) This bill aims to encourage businesses and workers to increase participation in retirement plans by offering new and existing tax-preferred savings accounts. The CBO estimates that enacting this bill would reduce federal tax revenue by $21 billion over the 2019-2028 period. https://www.countable.us/…/hr6757-115-family-savings-act-of…
American Innovation Act of 2018 H.R. 6756 (https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/115/hr6756) This bill seeks to to spur innovation by helping brand-new businesses with startup costs and capital by expanding tax deductions available to them. The CBO estimates that enacting this bill would reduce tax revenue by $5.4 billion over the 2019-2028 period. https://www.countable.us/bills/hr6756-115
Protecting Family and Small Business Tax Cuts Act H.R. 6760 (https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/house-bill/6760) This bill would make the tax cuts for individuals, families, and small businesses enacted by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 permanent. The CBO estimates that enacting this bill would reduce tax revenue by $632 billion over the 2019-2028 period, which would be focused in the years after the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act’s provisions scheduled sunset at the end of 2025. https://www.countable.us/…/hr6760-115-protecting-family-and…
Today would be a good day to call your members of Congress and ask them how they will pay for the tax cuts they are pushing. Are these bills a band-aid to make up for the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that has proven to be very unpopular? It seems to me that Congress needs to go back to the drawing board and create a better tax bill.
2. Third Kavanaugh Accuser Comes Forward
A third person has come forward to accuse Supreme Court Nominee, Brett Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct. The lawyer representing the victim says his client will come forward within the next 48 hours. Stay tuned. Read more about it here: https://www.vox.com/…/michael-avenatti-email-brett-kavanaug…
3. Rod Rosenstein
Waves of alarm spread across social media yesterday amid rumors that deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein was going to be fired by someone in the Trump administration. Thankfully, that did not occur, but Trump and Rosenstein are scheduled to meet again this Thursday to discuss reports that Rosenstein had considered secretly taping Trump. Is this a ploy from the White House to distract from the Kavanaugh train wreck? (The Senate Judicial Committee is scheduled to reconvene with Brett Kavanaugh on Thursday). Keep an eye on this one. And remember to sign up with MoveOn.org’s No One Is above The Law.

Monday 9/24 Call to Action

There were two political revelations since Friday.

First, "Memos written by Andrew McCabe when he was the acting FBI director say that Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein suggested he secretly record his talks with President Trump, and that Rosenstein discussed possibly trying to remove Trump from office, according to people familiar with the matter."

https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/mccabe-memos-say-rosenstein-considered-secretly-recording-trump/2018/09/21/f4aa9a62-bdca-11e8-8792-78719177250f_story.html

Second, there is a second accuser in the SCOTUS/Kavanaugh fight.

https://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/senate-democrats-investigate-a-new-allegation-of-sexual-misconduct-from-the-supreme-court-nominee-brett-kavanaughs-college-years-deborah-ramirez

Democrats are calling for a postponement in the confirmation proceedings. We can ask Senator Klobuchar, who serves on that committee, to do the same.

https://www.cnn.com/2018/09/23/politics/kavanaugh-allegation-second-woman/index.html

Friday 9/21 Call to Action

Friday
Early Voting Has Begun!
Today is the first day of absentee/in person early voting in Minnesota. I have to admit, I am pretty excited. My absentee ballot arrived in the mail yesterday and I am looking forward to filling it out later today. Have you made a plan to vote yet? My call to you today is to encourage at least five other people to vote. Few states make the voting process easier than Minnesota does. If people understood how many options there were to fill out a ballot, I bet they would get the job done. We can do it! Let’s get out the vote! Like Howard Dean said, “YEAH!!!” https://youtu.be/9j6xm7e5bJo
Check out CD2Action’s list of groups in the area working hard to increase voter turnout. Volunteer today! https://cd2action.com/1533-2/

Did you know that Minnesota is first in the nation for voter turnout? Our Secretary of State Steve Simon has worked hard to give all Minnesotans the option to vote. Thanks Secretary Simon! https://youtu.be/tfZmBYe241E
If you would like to hear more from Secretary Simon, Indivisible groups are hosting Town Halls with him on September 23rd in Brooklyn Center https://www.facebook.com/events/303485016873039/ and October 17th in St. Paul https://www.facebook.com/events/308321799980787/
Mark your calendars!
Voting is vital but it’s not enough. We have got to commit to helping out our local campaigns. The results of the midterm elections will determine the direction of our country for years to come. Listen to Julia Louis-Dreyfus in this video here. Don’t just vote, Volunteer! https://thehill.com/…/407224-julia-louis-dreyfus-not-enough…
