Monday 7/31 Call to Action

1. Things have gotten quieter on the Russia investigation front, but the senate's August recess is coming up in two weeks, and that could give the president an opportunity to take steps toward stopping the investigation into Russian interference in the election.  Let's ask our senators to request that they cosponsor Republican Lindsey Graham's bill, requiring judicial review of any attempt to do so.

http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2017/07/graham-has-bill-to-prevent-trump-from-firing-mueller.html

2. Let's keep our eye on health care.  Lindsay Graham loses the points he gained from #1 for his attempt to get a health care repeal bill that can get to 50 votes in the senate.

http://www.politico.com/story/2017/07/29/senate-republicans-obamacare-repeal-241128

3. You may be surprised to hear that the White House is a bit chaotic, despite decisive and effective leadership from the top down.

Friday 7/28 Call to Action

Friday
Well, I’ll be a monkey’s uncle! Today is a good day. I am going to sip my coffee and revel in it a bit.
Last night three Republican senators, Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, and John McCain joined the Democrats and voted no on the “skinny repeal" of the ACA, preventing it from passing and squashing Majority Leader McConnell’s attempt to undo President Obama’s legacy. Today is a very good day.
https://www.nytimes.com/…/senate-health-care-bill-vote-phot…
Watch speeches from McConnell and Senator Chuck Schumer. I agree with Sen. Schumer. It’s time for Senate to get back to regular order, work in committee and start COMPROMISING again to fix the ACA.https://www.axios.com/watch-chuck-schumers-full-remarks-fol…
I know a lot of attention is on Sen. McCain today for his impassioned speech last Tuesday and his bill ending vote last night. Please, let’s not forget the heroines in the room. Sens. Collins and Murkowski have remained strong despite tremendous pressure from their peers, the media and Trump.
Read here to learn what Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke reportedly said would happen to Alaska because of Murkowski’s vote: http://www.npr.org/…/after-trump-targets-murkowski-interior…
The senators have been on the receiving end of some pretty vile and hateful remarks. Read more here: https://www.washingtonpost.com/…/6b0b6078-72d7-11e7-9eac-d5…
Take some time today to thank these courageous ladies for listening to their constituents and staying strong. Send a post card, an email, a tweet.
While you are at it, let’s take a moment to thank our fantastic senators from Minnesota. Sens. Klobuchar and Franken have been steadfast in their efforts to protect the ACA.
John McCain received a standing ovation when he returned to Senate shortly after surgery to remove a blood clot in his brain and a brain cancer diagnosis. Let us not forget that there is another warrior on the Senate floor. Senator Mazie Hirono is recovering from a second surgery for stage 4 kidney cancer. She made a moving speech last night. Watch it here:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/…/senator-mazie-hirono-health…
Please send her a note of thanks for fighting for others and wish her well. Hawaii Office, 300 Ala Moana Blvd. Rm. 3-106, Honolulu, HI 96850

Thursday 7/27 Call to Action

Thursday
1. Update on Yesterday’s Call to Action
The Democrats have vowed to do everything they can to prevent Trump from firing attorney general Sessions and appointing a new AG during the August recess. If this occurs, Democrats plan to reconvene every three days for “pro forma sessions”, a move perfected by the GOP when they prevented President Obama from appointing Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court.http://www.cnsnews.com/…/coons-democrats-will-try-block-rec…
In a rare case of bipartisanship, Republican Senators seem to be on the same page as the Democrats when it comes to Sessions (There are a whole bunch of snarky things I could add in here, but I just won’t.)https://www.washingtonpost.com/…/f3b00a6a-722c-11e7-8f39-ee…
Senator Chuck Grassley, announced in a tweet that the Judiciary Committee will not hold hearings for a new AG in 2017 if Trump decides to fire Sessions. http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/chuck-grassley-…/…/2629820
A small bit of good news to help you sleep at night. I still would keep making those protest signs though.
2. In a series of shocking tweets, Trump announced that transgender individuals would no longer be able to serve in the military. Trump failed to let anyone in the Pentagon know about this ahead of time and military leaders were caught off guard. I can’t imagine how it must be for transgender soldiers currently serving. It seems to be another case of presidential malpractice.
Read more here and then call your member of Congress and urge them to speak out about this.
The LGBTQ community took another hit yesterday when the Justice Department announced that while Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex and national origin, it does not cover discrimination of employees based of their sexual orientation.
http://www.cnn.com/…/doj-amicus-brief-title-vii-…/index.html
3. The EPA’s clean water rule, is in jeopardy. It will be on the Federal Register starting today and there will be a 30 day period of public comment. If you like to drink and swim in clean water, and you think that wild life deserves the same, I encourage you to participate. http://thehill.com/…/343898-epa-to-seek-comments-on-obama-w…
Here are a few more tidbits from the Rogan’s list.
The judicial nominee to lead the criminal division of the DOJ, Brian A. Benczkowski, has Russian ties which he has disclosed. http://thehill.com/…/343489-trump-doj-nominee-used-to-repre… Let's tell our Senators to oppose Benczkowski. Right now we have too many open questions about people with links to Russia to add another one to the mix.
The Trump administration has okayed arctic offshore drilling.http://thehill.com/…/341833-trump-admin-approves-oil-compan… We can use this tool from the National Resources Defense Council for a quick and easy way to send letters to our MoC's asking them to oppose arctic drilling. http://on.nrdc.org/2p6OgMz

Wednesday 7/26 Call to Action

Wednesday
It is becoming apparent that Trump has plans for special counsel Robert Mueller. Trump does not like Mueller digging into his finances and there is a sense that he will do whatever it takes to get him to stop. Trump cannot fire Mueller directly. Mueller was appointed by deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein after attorney general Sessions recused himself from all things Russia. Only Rosenstein can fire Mueller, unless of course Rosenstein is replaced as well. How can that happen? One way is to boot Rosenstein and move down the line of succession until Trump can find someone to comply with his wishes. Another way is to fire AG Sessions and replace him with someone who has not been recused. That seems to be what is happening now. Have you noticed how vocal Trump has been lately about Sessions?https://www.washingtonpost.com/…/5a51f3fc-7172-11e7-8f39-ee…
If Trump fires Sessions during Senate’s August recess, he may be able to simply appoint a new attorney general without the Senate’s input. Senate Democrats has stated that they will try to squash this attempt but it’s still a possibility. http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/democrats-worri…/…/2629626
Read more about how Trump could fire Mueller:http://www.marketwatch.com/…/heres-how-trump-could-fire-rob…
If the unthinkable happens, and Trump fires Mueller, we all must be ready to stand up and resist! Groups all around the United States including Minnesota are preparing to gather and raise their voices if Trump decides to roadblock democracy. Today is the day for you to make a plan for how you will fight against this.
Read more about the resistance getting ready: http://www.slate.com/…/the_resistance_is_already_planning_f…
What: If Trump fires Robert Muller, the resistance make plans to protest.
When: A. If Trump fires Mueller BEFORE 2 p.m. (Eastern time), rallies will happen at 5 p.m. (local time).
B. If Trump fires Mueller AFTER 2 p.m. (Eastern time), rallies will happen the following day at 12 p.m. (local time)

Tuesday 7/25 Call to Action

‘Tueaday
1. Healthcare Bill, UGH!
In yet another chapter of the bill that would not go away, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell plans to have the Senate vote to proceed sometime this afternoon. If the Senate votes yes, they will then vote either on the AHCA bill passed by the House last May, to repeal the ACA and not replace, or repeal the ACA and replace it with a new bill. Here’s the thing: they will vote today but none of the senators (besides a select few) know on what they will be voting. Ludicrous! Senator John McCain will be back from his brain surgery. I wonder if receiving a diagnosis of brain cancer will have changed his vote.
https://www.nytimes.com/…/pol…/health-care-senate-vote.html…
I am so very thankful for Senators Klobuchar and Franken, and their pledge to fight for Minnesota’s right to healthcare, but it is difficult to watch this unfold from the sidelines. What can we do today to help? Call Klobuchar and Franken and encourage them to do everything in their power to slow down this process. (Remember the “vote-a-rama”?)
You could help encourage citizens from key states to call their senators. Sign up here to be part of Indivisible’s phone bank: https://docs.google.com/…/1S2XvD-vfQAej0xF3QOfloe…/viewform…
Check out this thread from Ben Wikler, Washington director of MoveOn. This will give you a great timeline of what is expected to happen with the healthcare vote. https://twitter.com/benwikler/status/889288933414187008
2. Christopher Wray
Matt Katz from WNYC news published a story about Christopher Wray, the nominee for director of the FBI. Apparently, he was Chris Christie’s tax payer funded lawyer during the time of “Bridgegate”. He was working and billing hours for 11 months before filling out documents that would allow the public to know he was working for Christie. This took place during Christie’s run for president. It seems quite convenient that this was undisclosed during the campaign.
It is reported that Wray was recommended to Trump by Christie. In light of Trump’s recent comments about the FBI director shoud work for the president and not independently, Wray’s willingness to bend the rules is especially concerning.
Not a single question about “Bridgegate” was asked during the Wray hearing. The Judicial Committee voted unanimously in favor of Mr. Wray. Remember, both Sens. Klobuchar and Franken are on this committee. Let’s call them and ask them how they feel about this report.

3. Tomorrow a plan.
There has been rumors on the street that Trump may replace AG Jeff Sessions during the August recess. This will open the door to firing Robert Mueller. If that happens we must be ready to push back with vigor. Tomorrow we will talk about creating a plan to do so. This is especially important considering this report from the Hill: Cruz Being Considered to Replace Sessions. (Aaaaaaahhhhhhh!) http://thehill.com/…/343556-cruz-being-considered-to-replac…

Monday 7/24 Call to Action

1. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) is under attack.  This would be a good opportunity to call your representative and senators; this is one of the most powerful tools has so Congress doesn't have to depend on the truth-telling of the administration; its destruction would be a blow to democracy.  We'd have no idea how many people would really get kicked off Obamacare in an ACA repeal.  http://www.cnn.com/2017/07/21/politics/former-cbo-directors-respond-criticism/index.html

2. The health care bill is "Not dead yet" -- see morbid Monty Python video below.  It's sure looking that way, though.  Without Collins and McCain, Rand Paul would have to vote for the bill, and that doesn't look too likely.  We can thank our senators for holding firm against it. http://thehill.com/homenews/senate/343379-senate-healthcare-bill-appears-headed-for-failure

3. Kushner and Manafort are testifying.  Franken has asked that they do so publicly and under oath, but at this time, it looks like it will be neither.  http://thehill.com/homenews/senate/343354-franken-not-good-enough-for-trump-jr-manafort-to-not-testify-under-oath

Don't miss this explosive report on Justice Secretary Jeff Sessions.  "Russia’s ambassador to Washington told his superiors in Moscow that he discussed campaign-related matters, including policy issues important to Moscow, with Jeff Sessions during the 2016 presidential race, contrary to public assertions by the embattled attorney general, according to current and former U.S. officials."  https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/sessions-discussed-trump-campaign-related-matters-with-russian-ambassador-us-intelligence-intercepts-show/2017/07/21/3e704692-6e44-11e7-9c15-177740635e83_story.html
