Friday 8/31 Call to Action

Friday
There are lots of goodies in the news that are worth a call to you members of Congress. Here are just a few to get you started.
Democratic Candidate Has Personal Information Leaked
Former CIA operative, Abigail Spanberger, is running for US Congress against Rep. Dave Brat in Virginia’s seventh congressional district. It has come to light that the US Postal Service released Spanberger’s security clearance form to Paul Ryan’s GOP super PAC after they submitted a Freedom of Information Act request. The application contained very detailed information about Spanberger that should never be made public, including her social security number and her health records. Here’s some things to keep in mind:
*Security clearance applications should NEVER be included in FOIA documents.
*The time it took the USPS to release these documents was three weeks. Typically, FOIA materials take a notoriously long time to be produced; months to years even.
*Despite that fact that Paul Ryan’s PAC knew this information should not be disseminated, they used it anyways.
*The USPS admits that they released the same information on other Democratic candidates as well.
Republicans in power are pushing the boundaries of norms to the extreme. We have got to vote them out in November. A failure to do so will give them carte blanche to dismantle our democracy.

Trump Blocks Pay Raises for Civilian Government Workers
Yesterday, Trump announced that he was canceling a 2.1 percent pay increase for government workers in an effort to keep our nation fiscally sustainable. Keep in mind that Trump (and the GOP in Congress) happily passed a tax cut that will balloon the federal deficit by $1 trillion.
Government workers aren’t fancy. They are regular people living across the United States that deserve to make a living wage and have pay increases to keep up with the rising cost of living. Congress has the power to circumvent Trump’s orders. Why not call and ask them to do so. Who are are representatives fighting for? Is it the wealthy 1 percent or regular working class constituents?

Sexually Transmitted Diseases Are on The Rise
Federal funding for STD (also known as Sexually Transmitted Infections) prevention and control has been decreasing for the past fifteen years. Reports this week tell us that STD’s are on the rise. In fact, the United States has the honor of having the highest rate of STDs in the industrialized world. Studies are finding that some sexually transmitted infections, like gonorrhea are becoming resistant to antibiotics. Denying Americans access to education and preventative measures is a disservice. We can do better than this. You know how we can fix this? That’s right, get out the vote in November. Nothing will improve until we get better representation.

If you have some extra time today you can call Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar to declare STDs a public health crisis to help bring attention to this issue, and to encourage funding to help combat the spread of STDs in the U.S.:

Judge Rules Against Alex Jones and Infowars in Sandy Hook Lawsuit
Here’s a little good news to come out of a terrible situation. A Texas judge denied the motion by the conspiracy theorist Alex Jones to dismiss a defamation lawsuit brought against him and his Infowars operation by the parents of a Sandy Hook shooting victim, in a ruling released on Thursday. Jones and his Infowars lackeys have terrorized the families of the Sandy Hook victims for years. At the very least they deserve their day in court.

Thursday 8/30 Call to Action

Thursday 8/30

1. Now they are coming for citizens.
These are truly scary times when the government demands papers from their citizens, confiscates them and puts people in detention centers, and deportation proceedings are ordered.

2. Kavanaugh
We have to keep fighting everyday in opposition of Kavanaugh for SCOTUS. Here’s a report published with Kavanaugh’s civil rights record.

3. Facebook
I have this love/hate relationship with Facebook. Learning that Facebook ran ads targeting LGBTQ users with conversion therapy makes me so angry. They are no longer running these ads but there needs to be better oversight. Ads like these promote abuse and they should be illegal everywhere.

4. Enbridge Line 3
Taken from the Sierra Club North Star Chapter
“Enbridge’s track record and history of spills makes it clear that this pipeline poses an unacceptable threat of permanent damage to the Mississippi River headwaters region and the pristine lake country of northern Minnesota. The route also directly threatens Ojibwe wild rice treaty rights and sensitive ricing waters. Minnesotans shouldn’t have to bear these risks for the benefit of foreign tar sands companies. Instead, we must transition from fossil fuels to clean energy solutions that support local economies, public health, and a clean, just, equitable future.”
Let’s continue to pressure Governor Dayton “to act immediately to halt the permits and any pre-construction until legal appeals have been heard, courts have weighed in, and the tribal cultural properties survey has been completed.”

Wednesday 8/29 Call to Action

Wednesday
Puerto Rico Death Toll Soars
Last year, President Trump implied that Hurricane Maria was not "a real catastrophe, like Katrina." The Puerto Rican government just updated the official death count for Hurricane Maria from 64 to 2,975 people. That’s over a thousand more people who died in Puerto Rico than in Katrina. It is officially one of the deadliest natural disasters in history. Many of the deaths occurred in the weeks and months following the hurricane leading to the conclusion that Trump and his Administration’s failure to respond is a factor in the death of so many U.S. citizens.

Here’s Trump congratulating himself shortly after the Hurricane last Octoberhttps://youtu.be/vjYxuVeoRJs
Trump’s Judges
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Senator Chuck Schumer negotiated a package deal of district court judges, fast-tracking 11 nominations in one session. I am not sure what Sen. Schumer thinks a negotiated deal is, but this seems suspect to me. Seven of the 11 nominations were Trump picks. Are the three other judges Sen. Schumer’s package deal? According to news reports, seven of those 11 nominations were confirmed.
Including these judicial nominees, Donald Trump will have confirmed 33 district court judges, 26 appeals court judges, and 1 Supreme Court justice (plus the likely possibility of Brett Kavanaugh)-all with lifetime tenure—and most are pretty young. Long after his presidency fades into history, they'll still be shaping U.S. law.
Senator Amy Klobuchar tweeted this out last night:
“Congrats to Nancy Brasel our new federal judge!
This got done today and it makes the August Senate
session more than worth it.
Eric Tostrud will be confirmed next week!”
I’m not sure what is going on over there in the Senate Judiciary Committee. Today is a great day to call Senator Klobuchar’s office and ask her. Hurry, eight more of Trump’s district court nominees are set for confirmation next week. Also, elections have consequences.

Trump administration to pay Minnesota for lost health-care funds
Here’s a little bit of good news to cleanse your palate. The Trump administration is set to pay Minnesota back the federal funding it’s due for programs that will provide health care to thousands of low-income Minnesota residents. Minnesota offers “Basic Health Programs” to Minnesotans who fall above the poverty level and make slightly too much to qualify for Medicaid; approximately 84,000 people in the state. The program helps keep health care affordable for this group of individuals. Under the law, the federal government is responsible for providing 95 percent of the funds for this program. They failed to do so and Governor Dayton had Minnesota’s Attorney General sue the Department of Health and Human Service for the money.
Be happy for this little victory. Be sure to thank Governor Dayton and AG Swanson. This is a great example of how important it is to have quality elected officials working for Minnesota. We have got to work hard to ensure Tim Walz becomes governor and Keith Ellison become Attorney General. (see yesterday’s CTA for more information about the GOP candidate for Attorney General, Doug Wardlow. He’s a bad dude.)

Tuesday 8/28 Call to Action

Tuesday
Trump’s Orphans
It has been ONE MONTH, since we passed the deadline set by a federal judge for Trump’s administration to reunite separated migrant children with their parents. It seems there are no penalties for ignoring the deadline, which is perplexing and disheartening. It has become clear that our own government tore families apart without any intention of ever reuniting them. These are Trump’s orphans. There are still 528 children, some as young as five years old, still separated from their parents. It is suspected that 412 of these children’s parents have been deported. The ACLU is trying their best to find these families but they are facing an uphill battle. I know the current state of America is like a whack-a-mole game of scandal after scandal. It’s exhausting! But let’s not forget these kids. We would hope for at least that much if these innocent children were our own. Call you members of Congress today and remind them that this still needs to be remedied.

Doug Wardlow
Doug Wardlow is running on the GOP ticket for Minnesota’s Attorney General. A report from City Pages revealed that he is an active member of Alliance Defending Freedom. This is a nonprofit that states that its purpose is to defend free speech and religious liberty. The Southern Poverty Law Center has defined Alliance Defending Freedom as a hate group that supports “the recriminalization of homosexuality of the U.S. and criminalization abroad”, defends “state-sanctioned sterilization of trans people abroad” and claims that a “‘homosexual agenda’ will destroy Christianity and society.”
Wardl0w has a history with the Anoka-Hennepin School Board, pushing the agenda of boys and girls being forced to use bathrooms that match their genitalia and not their gender identity. He also believes that businesses can fire transgender individuals that violate their religious beliefs about human sexuality, and has bemoaned the Supreme Court’s decision to allow same-sex couples the right to marriage.
I don’t think Doug Wardlow has received enough press about this, do you? Let’s spend some time today sharing this story and asking questions. This is a serious situation and we need to make sure that Wardlow does not win in November.

From Rogan’s list:
The top student loan ombudsman at the Consumer Financial Protection Board has resigned due to the administration’s new policies that favor large financial companies and are detrimental to students.
http://thehill.com/…/403773-top-student-loan-official-resig….
https://www.npr.org/…/student-loan-watchdog-quits-blames-tr…
At the crux of this issue is the Department of Education’s new policy not to share student loan information with the CFPB and their attempts to limit student loan refunds for students claiming they were defrauded by their colleges. We can comment on this new regulation(https://www.regulations.gov/document?D=ED-2018-OPE-0027-0001), but only until this Thursday, August 30.
We should also contact the Department of Education (202-401-3000; US Department of Education, 400 Maryland Ave SW, Washington, DC 20202; betsy.devos@ed.gov) to protest these policies, and tell our MoCs that we want to see the Consumer Financial Protection Board do the job it was intended to--protect consumers, not companies.
