Friday 5/17 Call to Action

Friday 5/17

These are dark days. There are extreme efforts across the country trying to strip women of their reproductive health. What happens when a country bans abortion? Romania outlawed abortions in 1966 and it created a dystopian horror of overcrowded, filthy orphanages, and thousands of women died from back-alley abortions.

When you limit women’s access to reproductive healthcare, you impede their economic development, and decrease their opportunities for success. And by this undertaking, you limit the number of women willing to lean in and participate in the political process. This should never be up to politicians. Ever. These decisions are for the women, their families, and their doctor.
If you are looking for updates on what is happening with these bans, or would like to host an event to protest what these politicians are doing to women, sign up here:

Trump’s pick for ICE director says, “He can tell which migrant children will become gang members by looking into their eyes.” I am so sick of all of this hateful rhetoric. “Morgan’s comment echoed statements by President Donald Trump. During an event last year in Long Island, N.Y., Trump said unaccompanied minors “look so innocent,” but aren’t in reality.” The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs has not yet scheduled a confirmation hearing, but we can not let this guy go under our radar without a fight. https://www.politico.com/story/2019/05/16/mark-morgan-eyes-ice-director-1449570

How can activists fight back as ICE sows fear in immigrant communities? Check out this great article for Teen Vogue on what you can do. Hennepin County is a sanctuary county, but we have immigrants that live statewide. https://www.teenvogue.com/story/how-to-fight-back-against-ice
Keep pressuring your MoC to defund hate.

Here is what is happening at the state level. Time is running out on a deal. Constitutionally the House and Senate are required to adjourn the regular legislative session by midnight on Monday.“Call and let them know we expect schools and healthcare to be fully funded, that we want to long term plan to pay for infrastructure, and we will not accept a budget that leaves Minnesotans behind.”

Former FBI, Justice Department and NSC, and Pentagon officials team up to suggest questions Congress should ask Mueller. “We now suggest the questions below for Congress to ask Special Counsel Mueller as he breaks his silence and offers congressional testimony.  We offer these questions as an addition to the 60 questions posed by the 10 Democratic members of the Senate Judiciary Committee. We believe there is very little overlap between the two lists, and we offer ours as a supplement.”
