Wednesday 5/2 Call to Action

Wednesday
1. Congress at Home
Congress is on recess this week. I wonder where Minnesota’s members will pop up for a photo op? If your elected officials have been stingy with the town halls, perhaps today would be a good day to call and ask them about it.
Use this time to focus on what’s happening at the Capitol. Watch Your Reps MN has a list of bills to be aware of. Call your elected officials on the bills you find important.

2. Stand up for Educators
How can we succeed in America is we don’t put the education of our citizens first? Teachers in Oklahoma, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Arizona are standing up to years of insufficient school funding and unlivable wages. Will Minnesota be the next state to fail its students?
Want to see the state of schools in the United States? Take a look at this article here:https://www.nytimes.com/…/reader-center/us-public-schools-c…
It shouldn’t be this way!
During Governor Tim Pawlenty’s tenure, funding for public schools was slashed by almost $2,000 per student. While some of that money has been returned by Governor Dayton, many Minnesota school districts are still facing severe financial shortfalls. What does that mean? It means teacher and support staff layoffs and larger class sizes; the loss of art and music programs; less funding for special education; teachers buying supplies for students; buildings in disrepair.
I am proud to live in Minnesota and I want this state to be an example for the rest of the country on how to invest in education and future generations. Minnesota’s Congress is working hard to change that and we must fight back. What can we do?
Governor Dayton has proposed $137.9 million in emergency funding for schools. This will increase resources for every Minnesota school district by $126 per student. Read more about his proposal here: https://mn.gov/governor/newsroom/?id=1055-337970

* Call your Minnesota members of Congress. Ask them to support Emergency School Aid and tell them to make investing in Education a priority.
* While you are on the phone, ask your moC’s to make funding for all-day preschool programs permanent: https://www.mprnews.org/…/schools-governor-push-to-make-pre…
* Sign this petition calling for increased funding for Special Education programs http://seiumn.seiu.org/…/tell-minnesota-elected-officials-s…
* Vote for public servants who will work to improve the lives of Minnesotans.
3. Help Get Voters to The Polls
"Why do so many Americans not vote?" It's a question that continues to bedevil American politics. Since "we can’t solve a problem we don’t fully understand" here's a short, pithy article that lists and explains the main reasons why. Spoiler alert: apathy tops the list. Political Charge, run by resistance activist "Tokyo Sand," will follow up this helpful article with future posts on "solutions we can all work on to combat these reasons." Let's keep an eye on this blog:

Want to change the trajectory of our government? Get voters to the polls. Extreme voter suppression laws that disproportionately impact people based on their race or ethnicity, gender, age, or income have started popping up all over the country. If we don’t fight back, more and more Americans will become disenfranchised. Check out all the new resources to help all Americans vote.

*Volunteer for a Minnesota Campaign*
The best way to change the trajectory of this administration is to elect public servants who want to work for the good of their constituents. The most important thing you can do right now is support Minnesota’s candidates. Are you well represented in your district? Adopt another district. November 2018 is a huge election for Minnesota. All hands are needed on deck.
Check out these candidates and make plans to help.

*Write Postcards to Voters*
Hey all your introverts, you can be an armchair activist! Help encourage voters to get to the polls by sending postcards.
An election guide from Postcards for America: In this Google doc, each State shows ALL Democratic Candidates running for Congress, Governor, Lt Gov, Attorney General, Secretary of State (if applicable) with links to their websites and Twitter. Each has a link to a Twitter Thread, a Shareable Facebook Post and a Document. For most States, there are also Info & Links for Voter Registrations, Absentee Ballots, Early Voting & Voter ID, Age Requirements and being a Poll Worker.
