Friday 5/4 Call to Action

Friday
1. Congress at Home
Congress is on recess this week. Use this time to focus on what’s happening at the Capitol. Watch Your Reps MN has a list of bills to be aware of. Call your elected officials on the bills you find important.

2. Representative David Pinto: Minnesota Leader
Minnesota’s Representative, Dave Pinto has been in the lead, fighting for sensible gun legislation. Unfortunately, the Republican majority in the House has prevented any gun safety bills from passing, despite overwhelming support from Minnesotans. Today would be a good day to contact Rep. Pinto and thank him for his hard work. It has not gone unnoticed. If you have a GOP Congressperson, give them a call today and ask them why HF 1669 and HF 1605 are not not in the Republican Public Safety omnibus bill HF 2856. Their lack of leadership has not gone unnoticed.

3. Good from Bad
The two men who were wrongly arrested at a Philadelphia Starbucks last month have settled with the city for $1 each. In exchange, the city has pledged to offer $200,000 to area high school students interested in becoming entrepreneurs. Rashon Nelson and Donte Robinson are a class act. Going forward, let’s use these men as an example of how we can fight to make life better for others. What will you do to make positive change?

4. Thank You Postcards
Are you sick of making phone calls to your members of Congress? Would you like to switch it up? Why not write thank you postcards? Check out Postcards from Kate. This website is a nationwide project aimed at encouraging brave politicians, journalists and other public figures to keep fighting for good. https://www.postcardsfromkate.org/
5. Help Get Voters to The Polls
During the last presidential election, 29% of eligible college students were not registered to vote. These numbers are far too high. We must do better than that. Fortunately, Senator Cory Booker(D-NJ) and Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) have introduced the Help Students Vote Act (HSVA) which makes sure that college students nationwide get the information they need to register to vote and become active citizens. HSVA builds on the provision of the Higher Education Act that requires colleges and universities to make a “good-faith effort” to distribute voter registration forms, by adding much-needed clarity and support for voter registration. young people do get registered to vote, they turn out in similar numbers as other age groups. Colleges and universities can play an important role in helping their students - many of them first time voters - get registered to vote and be ready for Election Day. We can read the bills here: H.R. 5564 and S.B. 2699 We can call our Representatives and ask them to co-sponsor and support these bills. We can also sign this petition and share on Social Media with the #StudentVote hashtag: https://secure.everyaction.com/tzwuUH8BqE-0xxMzGMCmLQ2?ms=yi
Want to change our representation in government? Get voters to the polls. Extreme voter suppression laws that disproportionately impact people based on their race or ethnicity, gender, age, or income have started popping up all over the country. If we don’t fight back, more and more Americans will become disenfranchised. Check out all the new resources to help all Americans vote.
