Tuesday 6/5 Call to Action

Tuesday
1, Protect Innocent Children
On May 7th, the Trump administration announced that the would take children away from parents that came to U. S. borders without proper documentation. Since that time, approximately 2,000 children (some just babies) have been locked away. 1,000 of them are stockpiled in an old Wal-Mart building in south Texas. https://www.vox.com/…/border-separation-trump-immigration-i…
The trauma that children separated from their parents experience causes permanent damage. The fact that this is occurring now, IN AMERICA, makes my blood boil. This is so unbelievable. If someone took my children away, I would be incensed. These children are all by themselves in a government warehouse with no timeline of when they will see their parents again. Lee Gelernt, deputy director of the ACLU’s Immigrants Rights Project explained to Rachel Maddow how awful this practice truly is. Watch that here: US inflicting lifelong trauma on immigrant children seeking help http://www.msnbc.com/…/us-inflicting-lifelong-trauma-on-imm… via @msnbu
Rest assured, families are not seeking refuge at our borders for fun. They are escaping war, violence, and extreme poverty in their own counties, and hoping for a better life for their children. Read this first hand experience of a mother from Honduras who was separated from her child. https://us.cnn.com/…/immigration-separation-moth…/index.html
Oregon’s Senator Jeff Merkley attempted to visit a facility in Texas, but was denied access to the building. He visited another another facility where children were housed in cages. Learn more here: https://www.cbsnews.com/…/senator-jeff-merkley-barred-brow…/
Republicans are blaming Democrats for this “because they refuse to close immigration loopholes” Keep in mind, those who get their news from Fox are receiving a totally different set of “alternate facts”. Check it out here: http://www.foxnews.com/…/reckless-sen-merkley-spreading-bla…
This seems to be a new pinnacle of terribleness for America. We cannot stand by and let this become normalized. Today, call our Minnesota senators and your member of Congress and implore them to do something. This type of awful behavior belongs in America’s past. We will not allow it to happen anymore.
2. Dick’s Sporting Goods
Shortly after the school shooting in Florida last Feburary, Dick’s Sporting Goods made a commitment to stop selling semi-automatic weapons. I am happy to report that since that time Dick’s shares have gained 26% and beat first-quarter expectations. Doing the right thing sometimes pays off! Great job, Dick’s Sporting Goods. https://www.cnbc.com/…/dicks-sporting-goods-q1-2018-earning…
3. Time to Get to Work!
Now is a great time to volunteer to help a worthy Minnesota candidate win in November. Rest assured, we all need to pitch in if we want to see positive change happen in our government. Virginia is a great example of this. Just month after a blue wave changed the face of Virginia’ s General Assembly, the VA Senate voted to expand Medicaid for 400,000 Virginians. https://www.washingtonpost.com/…/5df5e304-640d-11e8-a768-ed…
Indivisible is shifting its focus from resisting to supporting grassroots political organizations. Their new guide has tools you can use to help get progressives elected this November. Check it out: https://www.indivisible.org/…/announcing-50-state-politica…/
Do you hate what Trump is doing to America? The best way to check his behavior is to vote in Democrats in the fall. We have got to get people motivated to vote. https://www.nytimes.com/…/opi…/midterms-trump-democrats.html

We’re right around the corner from another set of special elections – and we’ve got the chance to help roll back some of the damage Scott Walker has done to Wisconsin from home. On June 12, the two seats Walker tried to avoid calling special elections for are up.

Flippable is organizing virtual phonebanks to help elect Caleb Frostman to the state senate and Ann Groves Lloyd to the assembly. Let’s join in! We can sign up here: https://events.mobilizeamerica.io/flippable/event/1481/
Want to know the best way to get out the vote? It’s canvassing. Nothing beats face to face interaction with voters. Put on your walking shoes and join a local campaign in some lively door knocking. If we all do a little we can make a big difference. What we do in the next 5 months will affect our lives for years to come.
