Friday 1/12 Call to Action

Friday
1. Election Integrity
Minnesota's own, Senator Amy Klobuchar is working on bipartisan bills that will help protect our elections from foreign influence and make it easier for all eligible Americans to exercise their right to vote.
S.2261 Secure Elections Act https://www.congress.gov/bi…/115th-congress/senate-bill/2261
During the 2016 elections, Russia reportedly hacked presidential campaign accounts, launched cyberattacks against at least 21 state elections systems, and attacked a US voting systems software company. Sen. Klobuchar is working with Senate Democrats and Republicans to pass a bill that would
*Improve cybersecurity information-sharing between states
*Provide resources to states so that they can scan voting systems for vulnerabilities
*Help states update voting equipment. (42 states have not updated their election equipment in over a decade!)
*Provide paper ballots as backup to ensure elections can be audited. (There are twelve states that cannot be audited right now!)
Unfortunately, it’s too late for comprehensive changes by the 2018 elections. If Congress acts now, they could help states start screening for vulnerabilities and share important information.
Senator Klobuchar thinks this should be a national priority and so do I. Let’s call Sen. Klobuchar and thank her for her work. Then call Senator Smith and encourage her to support this bill. Ask your representative to sponsor a similar bill in the House.

S.2106 Register America to Vote Act https://www.congress.gov/bi…/115th-congress/senate-bill/2106
This act would help states to automatically register eligible citizens to vote when they turn 18. Minnesota is one of 32 states where automatic voter registrations bills have been introduced. Minnesota also has one of the highest voter turnouts of any state. 81% of voters cast a ballot in 2016. I can only imagine that will be higher in 2018. Once again, thank Senator Klobuchar for her good work.

2. Protect Dreamers
From the Loyal Opposition
Trump showed his true self in responding to senators presenting a bipartisan immigration/DACA bill on Thursday by asking why the US would want people from “shithole countries” like “Africa” and Haiti, while suggesting more immigrants from Norway.
Trump wants to appease Congressional hardliners and his base, who insist Dreamers will not be protected unless Democrats agree to fund the wall and accept punitive immigration measures.
However there is substantial support among Republicans to protect Dreamers, and bipartisan proposals in the House and Senate that have some promise depending on how details are filled in.
Trump has contradicted himself repeatedly on his DACA position, both on Twitter and in meetings, but ultimately keeps backing away from reasonable solutions and siding with his racist anti-immigrant base.
Because Trump won’t stand up to immigration hardliners, it will likely be necessary for Democrats to be willing to shut down the government by refusing to authorize further spending after the January 19th deadline in order to get a vote on a deal to protect Dreamers without a wall or punitive new measures.
Ending DACA and leaving the Dreamers subject to deportation would be a cruel betrayal of young people raised as Americans. Congress must protect the Dreamers now.
Call your three members of Congress and urge them to support a clean Dream Act.
This is [NAME] and I’m a constituent in [ZIP].
I urge [Sen/Rep____] to support [S.1615/H.R.3440], the Dream Act, without conditions.
The Dreamers arrived in the US through no fault of their own and have been raised as Americans.
Breaking faith with the Dreamers or holding them hostage to funding for a useless wall would be cruel and un-American.
Deporting the Dreamers would not only be cruel, but would hurt the economy.
[If your MoC is a Democrat] Refuse to authorize any government spending past the January 19 deadline unless the status of the Dreamers is fairly resolved.
3. The Race to Become Attorney General: Another Important Election to Consider

4. Get Out The Vote
Consider volunteering for Melissa Wagner or Karla Bigham. Remember, the best way to end this madness is to change our leadership.
