Monday 1/15 Call to Action

Monday
1. HR 4712 Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act
On Tuesday, the House will vote on on a bill that would require healthcare providers to attempt to save any fetus born alive after an abortion. This bill was originally signed into law in 2002 by President Bush. That law did not contain criminal penalties. With this new bill, failure to perform lifesaving measures on a fetus would put the healthcare providers at risk of fines or even prison time, (including being tried for murder). Anyone who witnesses a failure to comply is required to report the incident to a state or federal law enforcement agency.
It is incredibly difficult to find non-biased information about abortion. Even the CDC is fairly tight lipped about it. From what I can discern, late term abortions, when a fetus would have the best chance of viability, are infinitesimally small. This bill seems to me like another attempt to intimidate abortion providers resulting in fewer clinics and diminished options for women.
Perhaps instead of this bill, we could encourage our members of Congress to support women and children by providing affordable healthcare and birth control options, passing CHIP, making sure quality day care doesn’t cost a mint, keeping Medicaid and SNAP around, and supporting the overwhelmed child foster programs. This administration’s lack of respect for women is astounding.
2. Bump Stocks
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is considering placing bump stocks in the same category as machine guns. (Remember, bump stocks were used in the mass shooting in Las Vegas this past October.) The sale and manufacture of machine guns for civilian use are already banned and those in circulation are tightly regulated. The ATF is looking for comments from the general public abut this until January 25th. Check in and let them now we would like to see some common sense gun laws including making bump stalks harder to obtain.

Get Out The Vote!
The Start Tribune posted a “Debbie Downer” article yesterday reporting that 45 percent of Minnesotans approve of Trump’s performance. This is up from 40 percent last April! 47 percent disapproved and 8 percent remained undecided. A booming stock market and a stable economy are stated as two of the big reasons Minnesotans are pro-Trump.

It seems the divide between Minnesotans is a wide as ever. Will we ever come together? I don’t know. Some say it’s possible.

I still think our best bet is to get out the vote.
Consider volunteering for Melissa Wagner or Karla Bigham. Remember, the best way to end this madness is to change our leadership.
