Wednesday 1/31 Call to Action

Wednesday
1. State of the Union Address
I could not bring myself to watch last night’s State of the Union Address. If you also abstained, you can get a recap of the speech here:http://wapo.st/2DLG1Sm?tid=ss_tw&utm_term=.6384c04b5f67
Need a palate cleanser? Here is the official Democratic response from Representative Joe Kennedy III. https://www.cnbc.com/…/watch-joe-kennedy-iii-democratic-res…
If you have more time, you can watch The State of Our Union: A Vision of Women Coming Together to Change The Balance of Power https://www.thestateofourunion.org/
2. Copper/Nickel Mining in The Boundary Waters
The Trump administration has canceled a detailed review of the Obama-era mining ban near the Boundary Waters. The Forest Service will no longer prepare a full-scale "environmental impact statement" on the effects of mining in Minnesota’s Boundary Waters. Instead, the Interior Department is planning on conducting a much less rigorous “environmental assessment” on how mining would impact the surrounding area. The reaction to this decision is mixed. Representative Betty McCollum is against the move, fearing that the toxic effects of mining will ruin Minnesota’s treasured wilderness for generations to come. Representative Rick Nolan supports the decision because of the jobs mining will create for his district.
Today would be a good day to let your members of Congress know how you feel about mining in Minnesota.

3. DETER Act
New bipartisan bills called, “Defending Elections from Threats by Establishing Redlines have been introduced in the Senate and more recently the House. These bills would impose penalties on Russia or any other foreign country that tried to interfere in US elections. Despite the fact that Trump refuses to sanction Russia, it would be a good idea to call your members of Congress and tell them to support these bills.
4. Don’t forget that Minnesota’s precinct caucuses take place on Tuesday, February 6th. Make plans now to attend. Find out the location of yours here:

Remember, there is a special election taking place on Monday, February 12th. State Senate seat 54 and state House seat 23B are up for grabs depending on if we can get voters to the polls. You can help, even if you don’t live in these districts. Visit the candidates’ web or Facebook pages for more information on volunteering.
