Omnibus Spending Bill
The latest short term spending bill that Congress passed is due to expire and the deadline for a long term omnibus spending bill is looming. Legislators must figure out a plan before March 23rd or face another government shutdown. There are quite a few unsavory morsels that are tucked inside this bill. 1. Defunding Planned Parenthood
The GOP is making another attempt to defund Planned Parenthood. House Republicans are looking to add a rider to the spending bill that would eliminate the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program, and prohibit scientific research that uses any fetal tissue. The GOP would also like to block federal funding, like Medicaid, from going to Planned Parenthood. You know what happens when you deny women access to quality birth control and health care? 2. Repeal The Johnson Amendment
The Johnson Amendment prevents churches with tax-exempt status from endorsing political candidates. GOP legislators would like to attach riders to the budget bill that would weaken the Johnson Amendment. Citizens United, which allows large sums of money to be funneled into our elections, has resulted in elected officials beholden to donors. There is evidence every day of how Congress makes choices to benefit big money over the needs of their constituents. This is a terrible idea! 5. Funding for PBS and NPR
In a world swirling in fake news, I appreciate the intelligent, balanced content that comes from PBS and NPR. Of course the GOP would like to gut funding to them in the spending bill. Republicans are trying to sneak in a bunch of riders into the spending bill that will be detrimental to our environment
They are looking to repeal the rule called Waters of the United States that puts rivers, lakes and marshes under the protection of the EPA and the Army Corps of Engineers.
They would like to downsize the Endangered Species Act and allow controversial hunting techniques such as shooting animals in their dens.
