Tuesday 3/13 Call to Action

Tuesday
1. Let’s go local today, folks. Our Minnesota legislature is up and running and the GOP controlled Congress will try to get their agenda through in a hurry.
Today the MN House will hold hearings on two bills that affect Minnesota’s health insurance marketplace, MNSure. Remember when Trump attempted to sabotage the Affordable Care Act by essentially eliminating the advertising budget, reducing the sign up time, and removing mandates? MNSure sheltered us from much of that nonsense. Now Republicans are trying to attack our insurance at the state level.
HF2725 Instead of MNSure, the statewide health insurance market, this bill would give each county money to come up with their own insurance solution. This will lead to a patchwork of different insurance coverages. This bill will make Minnesota’s insurance more complicated and more expensive.
The Government Operations and Elections Policy Committee will have a hearing today, at 10:15 am, so get your calls and emails in ASAP.
Here is a list of the committee members. If your representative is on this committee, call or email him/her. Otherwise, you can contact the committee chair, Tim O’Driscoll

HF3543 This bill caps the amount of fees MNSure can collect to 25% more than they collected in 2012. Since MNSure uses the fees to pay for operating expenses, this bill will attenuate MNSure’s ability to provide service to its customers.
The Commerce and Regulatory Reform Committee will hold a hearing on this bill today at 3 pm. Here is a list of the committee members. If your representative is on this committee, call or email him/her. Otherwise you can contact the committee chair, Joe Hoppe.

2. Securing Our Elections
Representative Tulsi Gabbard has introduced HR 5147, Securing Our Elections Act. https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/house-bill/5147
This bill asks for emergency funding to make sure every state can adopt a paper ballot voting system that can be audited to ensure the integrity of our elections. We have until the end of March to get this through if we want it to apply to November’s midterm elections.
Check out this article for more information and a handy calling script to use when you call your congressperson. https://www.theloyalopposition.net/…/congress-must-provide…/
Thankfully, Minnesota already uses paper ballots. Feel free to call Senator Klobuchar and thank her for her efforts to make our elections fair and safe from interference.

3. Pennsylvania Special Election
Today voters in Pennsylvania’s 18th congressional district will vote in a special election. This district, that went for Trump by 20 points in 2016, used to be an easy win for Republicans. Now the race between Republican Rick Saccone and Democrat Conor Lamb is neck and neck, with some polls giving Lamb a slight lead. Read more about it here and stay tuned to the results tonight. Go Pennsylvania voters, go!
