Friday 11/10 Call to Action

Friday
1. Tax Bill
Yesterday, the House Ways and Means Committee voted along party lines to pass its version of the House bill (Rep. Erik Paulsen), The Senate released their version of the tax bill as well. There are big differences between the two tax bills. With all these differences, will Congress be able to come to a compromise before the end of the year?

Keep making noise about this.
2. Roy Moore
A disturbing story from the Washington Post reports Roy More, Alabama’s GOP candidate for U.S. Senate allegedly had inappropriate relations with four underage girls in the late 1970’s when Moore was in his thirties. The youngest and most disturbing interaction occurred with a 14 year old girl. https://www.washingtonpost.com/…/1f495878-c293-11e7-afe9-4f…
What’s alarming is the lack of outrage and from other Republican leaders and the right leaning media about this scandal. Will this affect the outcome of the Alabama special election? Well, Moore has used the incident to raise funds for his campaign, so I am not confident about that.

Today, call your members of Congress and let them know this behavior is unacceptable. Encourage them to speak out publicly against Moore.
Want to do more? Postcards to Voters is looking for volunteers to write five postcards a week to Alabama Democratic voters letting them know how important the December 12th Senate election is. Text HELLO to 484-ASK-ABBY (484-275-2229), or email Postcards@TonyTheDemocrat.org and get started.

3. State Department
The Trump administration is quietly dismantling the State Department. Just like changes in the Judiciary, the loss of skilled foreign service members can have long term negative consequences.
Ambassador Barbara Stephenson has sent out a warning saying it’s time to ask why. https://www.pbs.org/…/rapid-cuts-to-top-leadership-at-state…

4. Our Senator, Amy Klobuchar is working hard for Minnesota. We should call and give her our support! From The Rogan’s List.
An alarming number of the recent mass shootings have been carried out by men with histories of domestic assault. A person convicted of domestic abuse cannot legally buy a firearm. But thanks to a loophole, this legislation doesn’t apply unless the perpetrator is married to the victim, has been living with the victim, or had a child with the victim.
https://www.nytimes.com/…/domestic-abuse-guns-texas-air-for… Senator Klobuchar (D-MN) “has introduced legislation that would close that loophole, and would also prevent stalkers from having guns.” Let’s see if our senators are cosponsors of S1539, Protecting Domestic Violence and Stalking Victims Act of 2017: https://www.congress.gov/…/115t…/senate-bill/1539/cosponsors and if not, let’s ask them to get on board. A companion bill is also in the House, H.R. 2670 so let’s do the same with our reps.
5. National Parks System
Don’t forget, Secretary Ryan Zinke wants to cut the size and funding of our National Parks. You have until November 23rd to leave him a comment.
