Tuesday 11/7 Call to Action

Tuesday
Don’t forget to vote! Don’t forget to vote! Don’t forget to vote! Don’t forget to vote! Don’t forget to vote!
1. Tax Bill
Ugh, I feel like a broken record on this one. Just like we did with the healthcare bills, we have to keep the pressure on our members of Congress against this tax bill. If this tax bill passes it will have some long term, unsavory ramifications. Unlike the healthcare bill, there has been significantly less noise from the resistance for this bill. Maybe your are like me; you’ve called your representative so many times that you are embarrassed that they recognize your voice. Why not try an alternative means of communication? Today we will focus on ways to communicate in writing.
Here’s an idea from the Rogan’s list:
Among the many items tucked away in the tax bill is the elimination of the Adoption Tax Credit designed to help defray some of the cost involved in many adoptions, especially adoptions of children coming out of foster care. Even the right is not happy with this provision. Religious groups, as well as House and Senate conservatives, say that by eliminating the credit, the proposal goes against the GOP’s “pro-life” platform. The credit is a one-time tax refund available for parents who adopt from foster care, internationally or through private domestic adoptions. It can be applied over the course of five years. For 2017, the federal adoption tax credit was $13,570. Adoption advocates are also urging the provision be removed. The groups say if the bill passes with the provision intact, it will be harder and more expensive for American families to adopt. http://thehill.com/…/358684-conservatives-hit-gop-tax-bill-… What a surprise that we can agree with the Religious Groups that eliminating the adoption deduction makes no sense. We might have different views on why it makes no sense, but it may improve our chances by joining them to tell our Reps NO to this “TAX CUT PLAN.” We can also go to https://adoptiontaxcredit.org/take-action/ to click a button and send our congress members a pre-written message.
The new tax bill will prevent America’s teachers from deducting their out of pocket expenses. Our children's teachers work their butts off on a shoestring budget. Oftentimes, they use their own money to buy supplies to ensure their students have what they need to succeed. The new tax bill will prevent them from recouping some of this financial loss. So crummy. Read more here and then contact your members of Congress.

Have a cell phone? Use this fantastic program to transform text messages into letters sent to your elected representatives. This is especially useful for those nagging thoughts that keep you up at night. Text them out and sleep like a baby. You can reference the Indivisible Guide’s scripts for a variety of topics if you are having writer’s block. http://www.indivisible.org/resources/
Letters to the Editor
Our members of Congress don’t like bad press. Write a letter to your local paper. Once it’s published, you can mail or hand deliver a copy to your favorite elected official! Momsrising makes it easy for you to write by giving you talking points and facts to back up your argument. Check it out!http://action.momsrising.org/lte/Taxes_LTE
Twitter
If you haven’t joined Twitter yet, you should. Your members of Congress are busy posting here and it’s a good opportunity to get your comments read by them (they are paying attention, and sometimes they may even reply. This is good especially if you have a representative who refuses to have a town hall meeting cough-Lewis & Paulsen-cough*)
Here’s a guide to get started: https://www.wired.com/…/twitter-onboarding-tips-for-new-us…/
2. Again, from the Rogan’s list:
Senate hearing about drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) began on Thursday before the Committee on Energy and National Resources. https://www.pri.org/…/drilling-arctic-national-wildlife-ref… We’ve worked hard to keep this national treasure, which has the largest variety of plant and animal life of any protected area north of the Arctic Circle, safe and pristine, but we must continue to do so. We can comment to the members of that committee: https://www.energy.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/membersour comments can be sent here: fortherecord@energy.senate.gov
3. Join a Post Card Resistance Group
Do you have excellent handwriting? Do you have a bunch of Forever stamps itching to be used? You can write some postcards. Join the Facebook group, Postcards for America https://www.facebook.com/groups/postcardsforamerica/
Here are some postcard topic ideas from my fellow resister, D. R.
* TJX, which owns TJMaxx, Marshalls, and Home Goods has continued to pay all Puerto Rico employees, regardless of whether the stores they work at are open.
THANKS to
• The TJX Companies, Inc., 770 Cochituate Road, Framingham, MA 01701
*Claiming potential “conflicts of interest,” EPA Chief Scott Pruitt has barred scientists who receive EPA funding from serving on the agency's three major advisory groups. A large coalition of science organizations, science advocates, environmentalists, and politicians have lined up in opposition to the policy change, arguing the rules not only disqualify top environmental and health researchers from advising, but also favor scientists paid for by EPA-regulated companies. They also have pointed out that EPA has strict rules in place for disclosing any conflicts of interest.
COMPLAINTS to
•Scott Pruitt, Director, Environmental Protection Agency, 1200 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, Washington DC 20460
• Senator John Barrasso (R-WY), Chair, Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, 307 Dirksen Senate Office Building, Washington DC 20510
• Senator Thomas R. Carper (D-DE), Ranking Member, Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, 513 Hart Senate Office Building Washington DC 20510
There are many more ideas, but in the interest of space I will stop at two. Get your pencils sharpened and get to writing resisters!
