Wednesday 9/19 Call to Action

Wednesday
Violence Against Women Act HR 6545
In light of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford’s allegation that Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her, it seems like a good time to support the Violence Against Women (VAW) Act (HR 6545 https://www.congress.gov/bi…/115th-congress/house-bill/6545/). The VAW Act works to direct a national response to crimes of domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence and stalking. This bill will expire at the end of this month if our lawmakers don’t act. Last July, House Democrats introduced a measure designed to reauthorize the VAW Act and then quickly went on recess. Now there are only a few days to get this bill renewed. Unfortunately, House Republicans have not been supportive of the renewal. Today would be a really good day to call your members of Congress and tell them that this bill needs to be made a priority.

H. R. 3798 Save American Workers Act
The House will be voting on this bill soon. The Save American Workers Act would repeal the 30-hour threshold that allows workers to be considered a full-time employee for purposes of the employer mandate in the Affordable Care Act and would require workers to reach a 40-hour threshold to be classified as a full-time employee. I know a lot of working families who will be negatively affected if this bill comes to fruition, since it will be easier for employers to deny workers enough hours to qualify for health care benefits. It seems like another vote against average Americans for the benefit of big business.

Refugees
The Trump administration has decided on the number of refugees that the United States will allow into the country for the upcoming fiscal year: a dismal 30,000 people, down from 45,000 this year, and 115,000 in 2016 under the Obama administration. Following Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's announcement, Kevin Appleby, senior director of international migration policy at the Center for Migration Studies stated that “Congress should exercise its oversight responsibility and push back hard on this low number through every tool at its disposal.” We agree. Let's contact our MoC and tell them that we know the U.S. is capable of supporting far more refugees in our country, and we want them to do everything in their power to do so. We can also hold Secretary Pompeo accountable by telling him exactly how we feel about the Trump administration's abandonment of those who need help. What we really need to do though is vote in new leaders.

Hillary Clinton
Hillary Clinton was interviewed by Rachel Maddow last night. Check it out, if only to remind yourself that articulate conversation is still a possibility. Watch it here: https://youtu.be/Nk3OLWpJzbw or read Secretary Clinton’s article about American democracy in crisis here: American Democracy Is In Crisis by Hillary Clinton - https://www.theatlantic.com/…/american-democracy-is…/570394/
Net Neutrality
Since the FCC abandoned net neutrality regulations, major Internet service providers have begun to slow traffic on popular Internet sites such as YouTube and Netflix. This is exactly what net neutrality advocates warned against. The Senate voted to restore net neutrality under the Congressional Reach Act, and now it’s up to the House to follow. Let’s make sure our MoCs know about the recent behavior of these ISPs and ask them to reinstate net neutrality as soon as possible. Let’s also contact our state legislators and ask them to pass legislation protecting net neutrality on the state level.

National healthcare advocate Ady Barkan, who has ALS, has an interesting approach to courting Sen. Collins (R-ME) vote on Kavanaugh. He is soliciting donations to go to her opponent in her 2020 re-election bid should she vote for Kavanaugh. https://theintercept.com/…/brett-kavanaugh-susan-collins-a…/ Over $100,000 has been raised so far.
