Thursday 9/6 Call to Action

Thursday 9/6

Where to even start? Everything we hear about in this breaking, chaotic news is unprecedented. It’s tiring and it makes your head spin.

I don’t know what I can write about Kavanaugh that hasn’t already been talked about and brought up. At this point, we should be thanking our Senators for the good fight they’ve been putting up in resisting this nominee. These are not normal times.

It’s concerning that a book and a published article have come out in the last couple days regarding how incompetent Trump is at this presidency, but what I find astonishing is that the GOP knows this and they refuse to grow spines and put country before party.
Washington may understand and acknowledge the fundamental dysfunction of the Trump White House, but the relevant power brokers—congressional Republicans and their allies—have shown no desire to act upon this slow-motion collapse of the executive branch. Their reasons are narrowly self-interested: Trump may be incapable of effectively carrying out the duties of the presidency, but there is enough of a working policymaking apparatus to accomplish key goals like crippling the regulatory state and building a durable conservative majority on the federal judiciary.”

Minneapolis is stepping up and resisting the EPA in their weakening of fuel standards and common sense climate policy. This is also a reason why we need to keep MN blue!

“None of us can afford to subscribe to every publication, but as the old saying goes, for the price of a cup of coffee a day, we can support a lot. Particularly seek out local newspapers, which have long been the fertile ground from which stories grow to a national level. They are in particular distress.
But we need more idealism and a recognition that supporting journalism is our patriotic duty. Journalists are standing firm in these perilous times, but they need support. No less than the late John McCain, in an op-ed earlier this year, laid out the stakes: “Journalists play a major role in the promotion and protection of democracy and our unalienable rights, and they must be able to do their jobs freely. Only truth and transparency can guarantee freedom.””

Dr. Wanyama allowed to stay in the States for now.
His fate lies in the hands of the Board of Immigration Appeals. He just learned the board granted him a stay of deportation, meaning until a decision is made, he can remain in the United States. Wanyama says it brings some relief.”

Get out The Vote
Do you need a little motivation to get out there and help a campaign? Read this opinion piece from Paul Krugman. He argues that the United States is one election away from becoming a broken democracy like Hungary or Poland. Yikes. https://www.nytimes.com/…/trump-republican-party-authoritar…
Check out this great website shared by my friend S. The Resistance School has online classes on all kinds of topics including how to effectively phone bank and door knock. There are so many great resources out there! https://www.resistanceschool.com/who-we-are/

This And That
National healthcare advocate Ady Barkan, who has ALS, has an interesting approach to courting Sen. Collins (R-ME) vote on Kavanaugh. He is soliciting donations to go to her opponent in her 2020 re-election bid should she vote for Kavanaugh. https://theintercept.com/…/brett-kavanaugh-susan-collins-a…/ Over $100,000 has been raised so far. Let’s see if we can help:https://www.crowdpac.com/…/either-sen-collins-votes-no-on-k…
Study after study shows that the most effective way to get people to vote is by having conversations with them in the four days before Election Day (Saturday, November 3rd–Tuesday, November 6th). Volunteer here to be part of the last big push. https://thelastweekend.org/?source=MN02
Sister District Action Network did a study on the impact of postcards on voter registration and released the results showing positive results:https://mailchi.mp/…/dark-money-fireside-chat-and-critical-… Let’s read the report and keep on writing postcards!
