Tuesday 9/18 Call to Action

Tuesday
Brett Kavanaugh
Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, came forward this weekend to put her name to the charges of sexual assault alleged to have been committed by Brett Kavanaugh. Initially, Dr. Ford did not want her story to become public due to the negative repercussions of being associated with such an event, but she made the brave choice to sacrifice her anonymous life so that her allegations of sexual misconduct would be taken seriously. I can imagine that that choice took a lot of guts. I don’t think life in the next few months will be easy for her. This situation is similar to the Clarence Thomas hearings in 1991 when Anita Hill testified that Thomas sexually harassed her when they worked together. She too was reluctant to come forward to put her name in the media and her fear was justified. Let’s hope we have learned a lesson over these years to believe women. Let’s hope.

A vote on Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court was set for this coming Thursday, and Republicans in the Senate Judiciary Committee wanted to quickly tidy up Dr. Ford’s accusations with a private meeting or phone call. They dragged their feet against changing this for as long as they could before finally capitulating just a bit. Dr. Ford will now testify on Monday before the Senate with a vote on Kavanaugh to follow later in the week. Democrats in the committee are protesting the decision to have a hearing on Monday insisting that the FBI should reopen Kavanaugh’s background check before any public hearings. The republicans, as you may guess, are against that. https://www.washingtonpost.com/…/21db2860-ba6c-11e8-9812-a3…
You may remember, last December our former senator, Al Franken was facing accusations of improper conduct. At that time, Senators Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski made statements asking Franken to resign. Read their statements here: https://www.wmtw.com/…/sen-collins-calls-on-franke…/14290188

It seems only fair that they would use the same judgment with a Supreme Court nominee and vote against Kavanaugh. If you are so inclined, you could send them a letter or a tweet reminding them of this.
Trump Orders Russian Information Declassified
One thing Trump excels at is distraction. In what seems to be another act of “look over there,” Trump ordered the Justice Department to declassify significant materials from the investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election. Trump wants the department to declassify portions of the secret court order to monitor former campaign adviser Carter Page, and release unredacted text messages of several former high-level Justice Department and FBI officials. This move could put sources at risk and/or harm ongoing investigation.
Rep. Adam B. Schiff (Calif.), the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, called the order a “clear abuse of power” and said that based on his conversations with federal law enforcement officials, the FBI and Justice Department would consider the release of these materials “a red line that must not be crossed as they may compromise sources and methods.”
“This is evidently of no consequence to a President who cares nothing about the country and everything about his narrow self-interest,” Schiff said in a statement.
What a mess. Only a monumental wave of voting is going to stop this. We have got to make that our main purpose until November.

Head Of FEMA under Investigation
Rivers are swelling, roads are flooded, and 32 people have died so far since hurricane Florence hit the east coast. As Americans are facing rebuilding their lives after this devastation, William “Brock” Long, the top official at the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is facing a potential criminal probe related to his use of government vehicles. Long is suspected of using government vehicles to travel between Washington DC and his home in North Carolina. Read more about it here: https://www.washingtonpost.com/…/f8a3a120-babb-11e8-9812-a3…
H. R. 3798 Save American Workers Act
Thanks to D. R. for keeping me informed about this bill. The House will be voting on this bill soon.
The Save American Workers Act would repeal the 30-hour threshold that allows workers to be considered a full-time employee for purposes of the employer mandate in the Affordable Care Act and would require workers to reach a 40-hour threshold to be classified as a full-time employee. I know a lot of working families who will be negatively affected if this bill comes to fruition, since it will be easier for employers to deny workers enough hours to qualify for health care benefits. It seems like another vote against average Americans for the benefit of big business.

“An unusual fundraising technique tying the release of campaign funds to how Maine Sen. Since the FCC abandoned net neutrality regulations, major Internet service providers have begun to slow traffic on popular Internet sites such as YouTube and Netflix.https://www.bloomberg.com/…/youtube-and-netflix-throttled-b…. This is exactly what net neutrality advocates warned against. The Senate voted to restore net neutrality under the Congressional Reach Act, and now it’s up to the House to follow. Let’s make sure our MoCs know about the recent behavior of these ISPs and ask them to reinstate net neutrality as soon as possible. Let’s also contact our state legislators and ask them to pass legislation protecting net neutrality on the state level.
Test Your Way to Victory!
Many of us may feel overworked, over scheduled, and under-slept, but have the desire to GOTV for the November midterms. We can join MoveOn’s texting team and transform the tiny bits of time in our week into progressive action in key jurisdictions across the country. https://front.moveon.org/join-moveon-text-team/
Tweet Your Way to Victory!
Here’s a way to use social media to support candidates we support. Let’s take a look: https://sterbalssundrystudies.miraheze.org/…/Helping_the_ca…
Redistrict Your Way to Victory!
From 2009 to 2016, Republicans had all the momentum in state-level elections, and they used those tremendous gains to stymie President Obama and the federal government generally. Now that the GOP has seized power at the federal level, though, we have a chance to flip that dynamic, to turn their president's unpopular malevolence and bumbling into big gains for Democrats in gubernatorial and state legislature races across the country. And we need to, in order to protect the people from what a right-wing White House, Congress, and Supreme Court could/would foist upon us (https://www.bloomberg.com/…/democrats-focus-on-governors-ra…). So, let's support organizations like the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, and find a race or two to support directly as well (even if it isn't in your own state). https://democraticredistricting.com/2018-targets/
Candidates cannot win without help from us. Commit today to doing your part.
Each candidate on the November ballot has a website where you can sign up to volunteer.

National healthcare advocate Ady Barkan, who has ALS, has an interesting approach to courting Sen. Collins (R-ME) vote on Kavanaugh. He is soliciting donations to go to her opponent in her 2020 re-election bid should she vote for Kavanaugh. https://theintercept.com/…/brett-kavanaugh-susan-collins-a…/ Over $100,000 has been raised so far. Let’s see if we can help:https://www.crowdpac.com/…/either-sen-collins-votes-no-on-k…
Study after study shows that the most effective way to get people to vote is by having conversations with them in the four days before Election Day (Saturday, November 3rd–Tuesday, November 6th). Volunteer here to be part of the last big push. https://thelastweekend.org/?source=MN02
