Wednesday 9/12 Call to Action

Wednesday
1. Yet Another Reason to VOTE
Republicans in the House have announced plans for another round of tax cuts for the rich that could add more than $2 trillion to the deficit. Republicans are doubling down on their argument that giving the richest Americans tax cuts will trickle down to benefit everyone.https://www.washingtonpost.com/…/house-gop-is-pushing-new…/…
2 Brett Kavanaugh
The nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to fill the open seat on the Supreme Court continues to cause significant concerns due to his views on abortion and birth control, his perspective on rights for LGTBQ people and those with disabilities, and evidence that he has perjured himself in front of the Senate in prior hearings: http://thehill.com/…/405663-kavanaugh-comes-under-new-scrut… and https://www.newsweek.com/brett-kavanaugh-face-perjury-inves…
Rebecca Solnit shares with us a list that shows where each Senator stands. It is shocking to see so many Democratic senators in the undecided column. Thankfully, Minnesota’s senators are solid “No’s”. Check out the list. If you are so inclined, send an email, a postcard and/or a tweet to the senators in the undecided category. https://docs.google.com/…/1IhksP1EBXbIxirXRILNBOj…/htmlview…

Indivisible is organizing a phone bank to call constituents of key Senators who could oppose the Kavanaugh nomination. We can sign up here: https://www.indivisible.org/phonebank/ We can also check their Save SCOTUS toolkit for a list of other things we might do. https://www.indivisible.org/phonebank/
3. Save The Children
As of September 4th, there are still 416 migrant children who have not been reunified with their families. https://thinkprogress.org/…/uploads/2018/09/sept-6-court-fi…
While the media cycle continues its quick pace with this administration, let's not let the momentum of this issue die down. We can continue to share the stories of these children, to help humanize them and illustrate the trauma that they are subjected to, such as this video from The Atlantic.https://www.theatlantic.com/…/ind…/569572/family-separation/
Then, let's call our members of Congress to ask that they put pressure on the Trump administration, and more specifically Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, to reunify these families. We can also make sure that we've commented at the Federal Register, opposing indefinite child detention here. https://www.federalregister.gov/…/apprehension-processing-c…
We can help reunite immigrant families by donating air miles, hotel, and rental rewardsto Immigrant Families Together. Let’s consider doing this, and also tell our friends.

Children still remain separated from their parents due to Trump's "zero tolerance" policy at the border, but even at the best of times, immigrants at the border are treated badly. Read and watch this excellent and compelling video story featuring prizewinning illustrator Molly Crabapple and her illustrations of families and children being processed and released from Post Isabel Detention Center in Los Fresnos, Texas. While interviewing immigrants, she also sketched them. A compelling reminder of how art can reveal our humanity better than any photo. https://www.rollingstone.com/…/immigration-border-crisis-m…/
4. Stolen Money
Last night, Senator Jeff Merkley from Oregon reported to Rachel Maddow that the Trump Administration is taking money away from FEMA so that they can pay to put more asylum seekers in detention centers. This news is coming out as hurricane Florence is barreling down on the east coast and is expected to cause massive amounts of (expensive) damage.

Test Your Way to Victory!
Many of us may feel overworked, over scheduled, and under-slept, but have the desire to GOTV for the November midterms. We can join MoveOn’s texting team and transform the tiny bits of time in our week into progressive action in key jurisdictions across the country. https://front.moveon.org/join-moveon-text-team/
Tweet Your Way to Victory!
Here’s a way to use social media to support candidates we support. Let’s take a look: https://sterbalssundrystudies.miraheze.org/…/Helping_the_ca…
Redistrict Your Way to Victory!
From 2009 to 2016, Republicans had all the momentum in state-level elections, and they used those tremendous gains to stymie President Obama and the federal government generally. Now that the GOP has seized power at the federal level, though, we have a chance to flip that dynamic, to turn their president's unpopular malevolence and bumbling into big gains for Democrats in gubernatorial and state legislature races across the country. And we need to, in order to protect the people from what a right-wing White House, Congress, and Supreme Court could/would foist upon us (https://www.bloomberg.com/…/democrats-focus-on-governors-ra…). So, let's support organizations like the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, and find a race or two to support directly as well (even if it isn't in your own state). https://democraticredistricting.com/2018-targets/
Candidates cannot win without help from us. Commit today to doing your part.
Each candidate on the November ballot has a website where you can sign up to volunteer.

This And That
National healthcare advocate Ady Barkan, who has ALS, has an interesting approach to courting Sen. Collins (R-ME) vote on Kavanaugh. He is soliciting donations to go to her opponent in her 2020 re-election bid should she vote for Kavanaugh. https://theintercept.com/…/brett-kavanaugh-susan-collins-a…/ Over $100,000 has been raised so far. Let’s see if we can help:https://www.crowdpac.com/…/either-sen-collins-votes-no-on-k…
Study after study shows that the most effective way to get people to vote is by having conversations with them in the four days before Election Day (Saturday, November 3rd–Tuesday, November 6th). Volunteer here to be part of the last big push. https://thelastweekend.org/?source=MN02
Sister District Action Network did a study on the impact of postcards on voter registration and released the results showing positive results:https://mailchi.mp/…/dark-money-fireside-chat-and-critical-… Let’s read the report and keep on writing postcards!
