Tuesday 9/4 Call to Action

Tuesday
I hope you had a fun weekend full of relaxation offset by some volunteering for candidates. Are you ready? Members of the House are back to work in Washington DC and the Senate will start the confirmation hearings for Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court.
Brett Kavanaugh
Brett Kavanaugh wants to overturn Roe v Wade. If Kavanaugh is appointed to the Supreme Court, the women in our lives, our friends, our daughters and granddaughters, and perhaps even ourselves, will lose a big part of their reproductive freedom. It will happen. We can count on it.
Last fall, a 17 year old girl (called Jane Doe) was held in an immigration detention center. She discovered she was pregnant and elected to have an abortion; a procedure that she has a constitutional right to obtain. The Trump administration did everything they could to prevent her from having that abortion. Tapes from Jane Doe’s case reveal that Supreme Court nominee Kavanaugh presided. Kavanaugh is on tape pushing for Jane Doe to get a sponsor (a family member living in the United States that could take her into their home) before obtaining an abortion. Finding a sponsor can take a very long time. Perhaps so much time that Jane Doe would be too far along in her pregnancy (past 20 weeks) to be eligible for a legal abortion. Kavanaugh wanted this poor girl to jump through multiple hoops to obtain an abortion that was her right to have. Kavanaugh willfully disregarded the current Supreme Court jurisprudence. Luckily, an emergency review of the case allowed Kavanaugh’s decision to be overturned. In response, Kavanaugh issued a blistering dissent.
Don’t doubt for a second that if Kavanaugh wins he will make abortion illegal.

Despite the fact that Republicans are ramming this Supreme court Justice down our throats, overturning a woman’s constitutional right to abortion is very, very unpopular. 71% of Americans oppose overturning Roe v Wade.
https://www.wsj.com/…/record-71-of-voters-oppose-overturnin…
More Americans oppose the confirmation of Kavanaugh than any other nomination in history. He is wildly unpopular with women. http://www.gloucestertimes.com/…/article_2d2a3a65-3428-5581…
For the first time in its history, the Center for Reproductive Rights is fighting Kavanaugh’s nomination. Abortion rights are fundamental to a women’s reproductive rights.

IN 2006, Kavanaugh went through a confirmation process for a lifetime appointment to the DC Court of Appeals. Before that, Kavanaugh worked in the Bush White House when torture policies were being developed and executed. Was Kavanaugh involved in crafting the torture policies? Kavanaugh denied any knowledge or involvement but later the Washington Post reported that Kavanaugh was indeed present during White House meetings about this exact thing. Kavanaugh told Senators under oath that he had no knowledge of and no involvement in any detention or torture of detainees. Did Kavanaugh lie under oath?

Donald Trump has withheld thousands of documents pertaining to Kavanaugh’s time in the Bush White House siting constitutional privilege.

Last night, the former lawyer to President Bush released 42,000 documents to the Senate pertaining to Kavanaugh’s service in the White House. No matter how adept you are at reading, no one can pore through these documents in time for today’s hearings. https://www.washingtonpost.com/…/hours-before-kavanaugh-n…/…
Overall, Democrats in Congress have had lackluster opposition to Kavanaugh’s nomination. Considering what’s at stake, I expect more from them than a few strongly worded tweets and Facebook posts. Today and the rest of this week would be a good time to really question them about what they will do to prevent this nomination from going through. Like Erin Murphy said, this is no time for tippy-toe politics.
Get out The Vote
Do you need a little motivation to get out there and help a campaign? Read this opinion piece from Paul Krugman. He argues that the United States is one election away from becoming a broken democracy like Hungary or Poland. Yikes. https://www.nytimes.com/…/trump-republican-party-authoritar…
Check out this great website shared by my friend S. The Resistance School has online classes on all kinds of topics including how to effectively phone bank and door knock. There are so many great resources out there! https://www.resistanceschool.com/who-we-are/

This And That
National healthcare advocate Ady Barkan, who has ALS, has an interesting approach to courting Sen. Collins (R-ME) vote on Kavanaugh. He is soliciting donations to go to her opponent in her 2020 re-election bid should she vote for Kavanaugh. https://theintercept.com/…/brett-kavanaugh-susan-collins-a…/ Over $100,000 has been raised so far. Let’s see if we can help:https://www.crowdpac.com/…/either-sen-collins-votes-no-on-k…
Study after study shows that the most effective way to get people to vote is by having conversations with them in the four days before Election Day (Saturday, November 3rd–Tuesday, November 6th). Volunteer here to be part of the last big push. https://thelastweekend.org/?source=MN02
Sister District Action Network did a study on the impact of postcards on voter registration and released the results showing positive results:https://mailchi.mp/…/dark-money-fireside-chat-and-critical-… Let’s read the report and keep on writing postcards!
