Thursday 5/4 Call to Action

1.  Health Care-Again
"So there's no final text of the bill. There's no public hearings. And there's no updated CBO score." - Tweet from Kyle Griffin

I don't know about you but I am so sick of fighting off this awful AHCA bill.  The House GOP members have their fingers in their ears and they are singing, "LA LA LA LA", ignoring the needs and demands of their constituents.  It's a blatant power play and it is exposing the shameful side of our government.

Yesterday, the House GOP tweaked the AHCA bill by adding eight billion dollars (over five years) to help offset the costs of insurance in the high risk pools that will be created for Americans with preexisting conditions.  The Center for American Progress claims that this is not nearly enough money to adequately fund high-risk pools. https://www.americanprogress.org/issues/healthcare/news/2017/05/02/431698/house-health-care-plan-not-enough-keep-high-risk-pools-afloat/

The House hopes to vote and pass this bill today before they go on a eleven day break.  We have got to muster up the will to call, write, and/or visit one more time.  I am not sure how these legislators sleep at night.  Perhaps with piles of money under their pillows.

2.  Let's Not Forget Russia
Watch Rachel Maddow bring up Russia's involvement in the Trump campaign again.  New evidence points to the fact that the foreign money paid to former NSA, Mike Flynn may have come from Putin connected sources.  The GOP has now changed their tactic to attacking MI6 agent Christopher Steele and the FBI in the effort to discredit the dossier produced by Steele, despite the fact that multiple new sources have verified parts of the dossier.  Republicans also want to push the idea that the Trump/Russia investigation is actually a Russian operation intent on interfering with American government (good grief!).  I cannot wait to hear former Deputy AG Sally Yates testify next Monday!   The republicans will stop at nothing to block the progress of this investigation and any resolution will need to come from the democrats.

As always, Senators Klobuchar and Franken are working hard for Minnesota.  Today might be a good day to call them and thank them.  Encourage them to keep fighting to get to the bottom of this.  We need them now more than ever.

3.  Whatever Happened to Separation of Church and State?
Today, Trump plans of signing an executive order that allows religious institutions to speak politically while still maintaining tax exempt status.  It will also provide "regulatory relief" for religious institutions that will make it easier to deny providing birth control services.

I am not sure if there is much to be done about this.  It is such a shameful EO.  This would be a great topic for a letter to the editor of your favorite newspaper.
