Tuesday 8/1 Call to Action

Tuesday
Holy buckets! How can it be August 1st? The summer is flying by. August brings recess for the House and the Senate. If we can get our legislators on break, perhaps our GOP panic levels will go from a 10 to an 8 for a few weeks. All we will have to worry about it Trump colluding with Russia and destroying the norms of the presidency. What a relief that will be!
1, Your representatives should be back home already (the Senate goes until August 11). I believe Rep. Jason Lewis was seen boogieing at the Billy Joel concert this past weekend. I think what Rep. Lewis and all the other members of Congress would appreciate is some feedback from their constituents. Remember, it was people just like you that moved Sens. Murkowski and Collins (and maybe McCain) to vote no on the Senate health-care bill.
Since their brave “no” votes, Murkowski and Collins have been showered with praise and thank-yous from their constituents. I think it has emboldened Sen. Collins to speak her true mind which is just so refreshing.
In response to the Senate’s failure to reject the ACA, Trump has threatened to end cost-saving subsidies to insurers. Collins pushed back on this idea defending the importance of keeping insurance affordable for low-income individuals. Read more here: http://www.politico.com/…/susan-collins-obamacare-payments-…
Here’s where we can get involved. About 40 Republican and Democrat House members have created The Problem Solvers Caucus. The goal of this caucus is to fix the ACA without changing the basic architecture. Yes! This is what we want! This plan would provide money to states to help reduce the cost of the ACA for enrollees. It would repeal the medical device tax and penalties for small businesses that do not offer insurance, and better define regulations for the sale of insurance across state lines. (See that there? I think that’s compromise. It can happen!) This plan may not be perfect but it is a start of the bipartisan fix which we desperately need. Let’s support this by calling our representative and asking them to get on board the bipartisan train. Toot! Toot!

2. The Wall
Construction of Trump’s border wall may begin as early as November in the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge near the Rio Grande. Besides being a huge waste of taxpayer’s money, this wall is bound to have devastating effects to the wildlife in the area. Until recently, our focus has been on protecting health-care for millions of Americans. Now it’s time to return to opposing construction of this terrible wall. Contact your representative and let them know what you think.
