Friday 8/4 Call to Action

Friday
Mueller’s Grand Jury
News came out yesterday that special counsel Robert Mueller will be using a grand jury to investigate Trump/Russia. Big words like grand jury make my heart go a-flutter with thoughts that the end of this debacle might be near. It seems that instead this is just the logical next step in an ongoing, methodical investigation. In federal cases like this, a grand jury gives Mueller the power to subpoena, and compel witnesses to testify or turn over documents. It does not indicate that an indictment is nigh or even likely.

In this Twitter thread, attorney Seth Abramson explains that the grand jury is “Phase 2” of 10 phases we can expect during this investigation. What that means is we are in this for a while yet. Some say another 12-18 months. Time to settle in and keep resisting, I guess.

The good news for today is that the Senate has introduced two new bills to prevent Trump from firing Mueller without just cause. One way Trump could do this is to fire attorney general Jeff Sessions over August recess and appoint a new AG that is not recused from Russia affairs.
A bipartisan proposal would temper Trump’s ability to fire a special counsel by giving the final decision to a three-judge panel from the federal courts.

Senator Lisa Murkowski (empowered health-care heroine) has scheduled nine “pro-forma” sessions during Senate’s August recess. Her move was unanimously supported by the Senate. Senate will meet every three days for one minute. This will prevent Trump from making any appointments while they are away. Here’s an environmental call to action from the Rogan’s list:
Congress has heard our voices, and is proposing cutting far less from the EPA budget than Trump wants. (http://thehill.com/…/341507-house-bill-would-cut-epa-fundin…) But they’re still Republicans, and they’re still planning on a 7% reduction in EPA funding… on top of the 20 percent they’ve cut since 2010. And this is just the beginning of the unacceptable environmental policies included in the FY2018 Interior & Environmental Appropriations bill. Let’s call our members of Congress and tell them we want them to vote no on this unless there are NO cuts to the EPA.
