Friday 8/18 Call to Action

Friday
1. Trump’s Words Have Consequences.
This news story was posted yesterday by a valued TPOM member. I think it bears repeating. Last weekend, Joe F. Fernkes, 61, of Willmar threw a severed pig’s foot at a Somali-American merchant selling vegetables at a local farmer’s market. (Islamic law forbids contact with pigs.) Mr. Fernkes was caught on film and had been charged with a misdemeanor. Actions like this are not a misdemeanor, they fit better in the category of hate crimes. Read more here: http://www.startribune.com/charge-man-curses-somali-merc…/…/
Unfortunately, hate crimes against Muslims are on the rise in Minnesota and the rest of the United States. http://www.twincities.com/…/bloomington-explosion-part-of-…/
This makes hateful, racist comments from Trump even more egregious.
In a tweet yesterday, Trump instructed his followers to remember the example of General John J. Pershing. This was in reference to an untrue story Trump shared on the campaign trail in February, 2016. Trump explained that General Pershing shot Muslims in the Philippines with bullets covered in pig’s blood. https://www.washingtonpost.com/…/trump-recycles-discredit…/…
It is unbelievable that the President of the United States is spreading such inflammatory (and false) information! His words negatively affect the lives of innocent people. Trump does not represent America’s values and this is never acceptable in the great state of Minnesota. Today, lets call our representative and senators and tell them to censure Trump. This goes double if your representative has an “R” after his name. (That means you, Lewis, Emmer and Paulsen.)
2. Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch
Justice Gorsuch, who was appointed by Trump to the Supreme Court, will be delivering the keynote address for the “Defending Freedom Luncheon” that will be held at Trump International Hotel later this month. While Supreme Court justices are not prohibited from making speeches to political groups, the fact that Gorsuch is speaking at a hotel owned by Trump a few weeks before hearing arguments on Trump’s travel ban seems like a bad idea.

Call your senators or contact the Supreme Court to express your concern.
