Friday 8/17 Call to Action

Wednesday
1. Blue Wave
FiveThirtyEight has released a new House forecast that predicts that Democrats have about a 75% chance of retaking the House of Representatives in the midterm elections. The Cook Political Report has moved four more GOP held seats into the toss-up category. This is great news! But this is no time to sit back and relax. Use this information to motivate you to work harder. Keep in mind that many of the battleground seats are right here in Minnesota. Congressional Districts 1, 2, 3 and 8 will all be very competitive and would love your help. We need to continue to encourage voters and get our friends to the polls with us in November.

As a whole, we need to stop trying to bring Republicans over to our side in November. The best path to victory for the midterms is to reach those in the community who have not voted in the past and get them to participate. We should all be working to do this now. Studies have shown that the best way to accomplish this is by talking to voters in person, on the phone or via texts. Literature is also an effective means of communication. The more personal the interaction the better. To accomplish this, candidates need hoards of volunteers. Your biggest call to action from now until November is to be part of this movement to vote.
Each candidate on the November ballot will have a website where you can sign up to volunteer. That are myriad ways to help so if you haven’t already, sign up and get busy.
Check out these calendars for upcoming events near you.

Study after study shows that the most effective way to get people to vote is by having conversations with them in the four days before Election Day (Saturday, November 3rd–Tuesday, November 6th). Volunteer here to be part of the last big push. https://thelastweekend.org/?source=MN02
2. Security Clearances
Earlier this week Trump shocked the country again by stripping away security clearances to former officials who he believes have a hand in the Russia investigation. This included former CIA director, John Brennan who has called Trump’s claim of no collusion with Russia “hogwash”. We know it was in connection to the Russia investigation because Trump copped to it in an interview with the Wall Street Journal.

Yesterday, retired Navy admiral William McRaven (He was the commander of the US Joint Special Operations Command and oversaw the 2011 Navy SEAL raid that killed Osama bin Laden) wrote an open letter to Trump, chastising him for revoking Brennan’s security clearance. He invited Trump to remove his own security clearance as well, saying it would be an honor to be among the people who stood up to Trump and his terrible administration. Wow. https://www.washingtonpost.com/…/8b149b02-a178-11e8-93e3-24…
Many are speculating that Trump revoked Brennan’s security clearance as a way to distract attention from former White House Aide, Omarosa Maginault Newman’s claim that there is a tape of Trump using racial epithets, and his recent tweet calling her a dog. This would make sense considering that Trump’s security clearance letter, that Sarah Huckabee Sanders read at a press conference this week, was actually dated July 26th. Perhaps he had this move on the back burner to use in a time of need.
Earlier, when Trump was publicly mulling over whether to revoke the security clearance of Brennan, Senator Bob Corker claimed that this was a banana republic move. House Speaker Paul Ryan dismissed the threat as mere trolling. Now that Trump has gone and done it, they and the rest of the GOP Congress are silent.

Today, let’s make sure that Trump’s racist remarks do not get forgotten. Let’s also remind our members of Congress that we expect them to rein Trump in. They are supposed to be his checks and balances after all. Although it feels at times like our GOP MoC are never going to wake up and act, we also do not know what will break the dam. Let’s let our MoC know that Trump’s retributive actions are not the hallmark of the country we want to live in. At the very least, keeping his terrible actions in the public’s mind will help Democratic candidates win in November.
3. Poison in Our Food
From Rogan’s list: A new report found glyphosate, the active ingredient in the Monsanto weed-killer Roundup that some health authorities link to cancer, in a number of popular breakfast foods and cereals marketed to children. Thirty-one out of 45 tested products had levels higher than what some scientists consider safe for children. Let's read more athttps://www.cbsnews.com/news/glyphosate-roundup-chemical-found-in-childrens-breakfast-foods . Let's contact the makers of these products to ask about glyphosate in their products:
a) General Mills https://www.generalmills.com/ask
b) Kelloggs https://www.kelloggs.com/en_US/contact-us.html
c) Quaker Oats (a PepsiCo company) https://contact.pepsico.com/quaker
d) Post Holdings https://www.postholdings.com/contact-us/
If we are giving our children cereals from other manufacturers, let's do the extra work today to find their contact information and make our inquiries. Let's share what we find out on social media.
4. No Parade for Trump This Year
Hours after it was revealed that Donald Trump’s military parade was going to cost $90+ million the Pentagon announced it won’t happen until at least next year. Seems someone may have put their foot down.
