Friday 8/24 Call to Action

Friday
Weekend of Action
August 24-25 is the going to be a weekend of action. What does that mean? It means that it’s time to get out and help a help turn Minnesota blue. Find a worthy campaign and make time this weekend to make phone calls, knock on doors, pass out literature, and/or make a donation. Let’s use this weekend to kick our commitment to change into high gear. Remember, the “Blue Wave” will not just happen. It requires all of us to get out of our comfort zone and help. We can do this together!
Each candidate on the November ballot has a website where you can sign up to volunteer.

Education Secretary Considers Using Federal Funds to Arm Schools
The Education Department’s Betsy DeVos is considering whether to allow states to use federal funding to purchase guns for educators, according to multiple people with knowledge of the plan. Last March, Congress passed a school safety bill that provided $50 million a year to school districts to improve safety in schools. It was expressly forbidden that this money be used for purchasing firearms. DeVos wants to circumvent this rule by tapping a $1 billion student support program, part of the Every Student Succeeds Act to allow school districts to purchase firearms and firearm training. This program’s original intent was for academic and enrichment opportunities in the country’s poorest schools and calls for school districts to use the money toward three goals: providing a well-rounded education, improving school conditions for learning and improving the use of technology for digital literacy. It was not intended to put weapons in the classroom.
Trump’s Kids May Be in Big Trouble
Trump’s eldest children-Ivanka Trump, Eric Trump, and Donald Trump Jr. are all in jeopardy in the ongoing examination of the legally dubious Trump Foundation.
All of these Trump children may be affected by a civil lawsuit from New York Attorney General Barbara Underwood. If laws were broken at the Trump Foundation, the kids would be implicated. These are state crimes, not federal, so daddy Trump would not be able to pardon them if they were found guilty of crimes.

This And That
National healthcare advocate Ady Barkan, who has ALS, has an interesting approach to courting Sen. Collins (R-ME) vote on Kavanaugh. He is soliciting donations to go to her opponent in her 2020 re-election bid should she vote for Kavanaugh. https://theintercept.com/…/brett-kavanaugh-susan-collins-a…/ Over $100,000 has been raised so far. Let’s see if we can help:https://www.crowdpac.com/…/either-sen-collins-votes-no-on-k…
Study after study shows that the most effective way to get people to vote is by having conversations with them in the four days before Election Day (Saturday, November 3rd–Tuesday, November 6th). Volunteer here to be part of the last big push. https://thelastweekend.org/?source=MN02
Sister District Action Network did a study on the impact of postcards on voter registration and released the results showing positive results:https://mailchi.mp/…/dark-money-fireside-chat-and-critical-… Let’s read the report and keep on writing postcards!
