Thursday 7/26 Call to Action

Thursday 7/26

Much is happening in the news and this administration has brought nothing but chaos. I’m keeping it simple-ish today. Be kind to yourselves and get outside when you can. You’ll feel better.

1. GOP moves to impeach Rosenstein
As important as it is that we want legislation passed to protect Mueller, we also need to make sure the Rosenstein is protected. Late yesterday Reps. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) and Jim Jordan (R-OH) introduced articles of impeachment.
“Meadows and Jordan's decision to file the articles of impeachment came hours after they huddled with top Justice Department officials at the Capitol to discuss lingering demands for documents. Other lawmakers in the meeting had described progress and rejected the notion of impeaching Rosenstein, but Meadows and Jordan said they remained dissatisfied.”
Time to let your MOC know how you feel about this and let the DOJ do its job.

2. ICE and the Hennepin County sheriff’s race
Stanek’s office asks the people it books their birthplace; if they were born outside the United States, he sends their information and fingerprints to an agency that shares them with ICE. Stanek also arranges calls between ICE and foreign-born detainees, reportedly without telling them of their right to refuse. Local officials have criticized these practices, and the county commission recently approved a plan to better inform immigrants of their rights and provide them legal representation. Stanek’s detention policies have also drawn attention: He informs ICE before releasing certain immigrants. Although he doesn’t honor ICE detainer requests out of concern that they are illegal under current law, he has worked with the Trump administration on new plans to facilitate the transfer of undocumented immigrants into ICE’s hands. “We want to find a way to say yes,” he said in 2017 of ICE detainer requests.”

3. Family Unification deadline
Congressional Republicans have quietly introduced a provision into H.R. 6470—an appropriations bill introduced on Tuesday for the Departments of Education, Health and Human Services, and Labor—that would eliminate such requirements for immigration detention facilities used to detain children and families. The resolution could remove vital safeguards protecting standards of care for migrant children currently held in state- and county-operated detention facilities, including in three ICE-contracted family detention centers currently running without a state license.
The result could create “an illegal black hole” where abuse and poor conditions inside detention centers would flourish, attorney David Bennion, executive director of the Free Migration Project, told The Daily Beast. “You’ll be taking away the only regulatory agency that is putatively engaged on the issue.”

4. Let’s Get out The Vote!
I think it’s going to take an overwhelming wave of blue voters to stop this terrible Trump administration in November. All hands on deck! At this point, you should be helping out a campaign at least once a week. Expect to do more as the midterm elections get closer.
Check out these calendars for upcoming events near you.
Study after study shows that the most effective way to get people to vote is by having conversations with them in the four days before Election Day (Saturday, November 3rd–Tuesday, November 6th). Volunteer here to be part of the last big push. https://thelastweekend.org/?source=MN02
5. Vote Now From Home!
**Secretary of State Steve Simon is reporting a 60% increase in absentee voter applications from the last election cycle! This is awesome!!**
Minnesota is lucky. We have a great voting program that makes it easy for us to get out the vote. You are now able vote early for the Primaries that take place on August 14th. Check out this page from CD2Action that answers some FAQ’s about primary voting. https://cd2action.com/voting-in-the-primaries-101/
Don’t forget, you can vote from home in your jammies. Just sign up here (https://mnvotes.sos.state.mn.us/AB…/ABRegistrationStep1.aspx) for an absentee ballot and one will be mailed to you for free.
If Trump fires Mueller or Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, please be ready to take to the streets in protest.
