Friday 1/18
It’s Friday so that means another Trump scandal. This one is from Buzzfeed, the same news outlet who first released the Steele dossier. That seems so very long ago. Buzzfeed reports that President Trump personally directed his longtime attorney Michael Cohen to lie to Congress about negotiations to build a Trump Tower in Moscow in order to obscure his involvement. Trump supported a plan to visit Russia during the presidential campaign season to meet Putin and discuss building the tower. While Trump, Ivanka and Don Jr. were getting regular updates about the Trump Tower through Cohen, they were publicly denying any involvement with Russia.
It turns out that special counsel Robert Mueller had evidence of Trump’s actions from other sources and Cohen has corroborated the story. This is the first known example of Trump explicitly telling a subordinate to lie directly about his own dealings with Russia. Read more about that here: https://www.buzzfeednews.com/…/trump-russia-cohen-moscow-to…
Remember, it was only last week that we learned that the FBI has been investigating whether Trump had been working on behalf of Russian agents against American interests, and that Trump destroyed interpreter’s documents of his conversations with Putin. https://www.washingtonpost.com/…/no-president-has-ever-be…/…
The Hoarse Whisperer gives a nice overview of the significance of this news in this Twitter thread here: https://twitter.com/hoarsewispe…/status/1083931796419563520…
Watch our fantastic Senator Amy Klobuchar get Attorney General nominee William Barr to state under oath that it would be obstruction of justice to have the president persuade someone to commit perjury on his behalf. https://www.mediaite.com/…/msnbc-shows-incredibly-prescien…/
We are all so tired that it may be hard to understand how significant and terrible this all is. Congress needs to act now. If they don’t, it may be time for a national strike.
Meanwhile the partial government shutdown drags on. Senate Majority Leader McConnell continues to refuse to allow Senate to vote on bills that would get federal employees back to work. Yesterday, several members of Minnesota’s DFL House Majority sent a letter to Trump asking him to reopen the government and end the shutdown. Please note that zero House Republicans signed the letter. Are you represented by a Republican House member? Contact him/her today and ask why they didn’t sign.https://www.facebook.com/mnhousedfl/posts/10158157658463275
Second District News
CD2Action
You don’t need to live in Minnesota’s second congressional district to appreciate how great the CD2Action is. This web page is an excellent resource for what’s going on at the MN Capitol and has a handy calendar of upcoming events. On Wednesday, Muslim and Jewish Minnesotans met at the State Capitol to support three important issues: Eliminating the Statute of Limitations for reporting sexual assault; Bringing Menstrual Equity to all MN schools; and Increasing the numbers of Teachers of Color in MN Schools. Learn more about the event and find some ways you can get involved by clicking here: https://cd2action.com/muslim-and-jewish-womens-day-at-the-…/
Representative Angie Craig
If you lived through Jason Lewis’ tenure as CD2’s congressman, you understand what a refreshing change it has been to have Rep. Angie Craig at the helm. Rep. Craig hit the ground running on January 3rd. She has been back to her district multiple times, and has her first townhall meeting is coming up soon (https://craig.house.gov/…/congresswoman-craig-announces-fir…). Rep. Craig has also been busy co-sponsoring some pretty great bills: automatic voter registration, background checks for firearms, the For The People Act, and the Hold Congress Accountable Act. Read more about those bills here: https://www.congress.gov/member/angie-craig/C001119
Here is some more information about HR 1, the For The People Act https://www.congress.gov/member/angie-craig/C001119 and HR 8, requiring background checks for firearms https://www.countable.us/…/hr8-116-to-require-a-background-…
Special Election! All hands on deck!
State Senator Tony Lourey was chosen by Governor Walz as Human Services commissioner. That leaves an empty seat in the Senate. It is important that we work hard to make sure a Democrat wins that seat in the special election coming up on February 5th. Tony Lourey’s son, Stu Lourey is running to fill his father’s seat. Stu Lourey has worked as an aide to Sens. Al Franken and Tina Smith and he comes from a family of public servants. His grandmother was former Senator Beck Lourey. Stu Lourey will be running against Representative Jason Rarick, a Republican who already represents half of the district.
Republicans have a two-seat edge in the Senate pending the Feb. 5th election. Check out Stu Lourey’s campaign page. Use those skills you honed this past summer/fall and help him get elected.
