Tuesday 1/8 Call to Action

Tuesday, January 8th
What a mess Trump and the GOP have made.
Trump’s tantrum over his wall has lasted 17 days now and there is no end in sight. The new Democratically held House will begin to pass bills individually funding federal departments affected by this partial government shutdown, starting with the Treasury Department and the IRS. The Senate Democrats will most likely be blocking any other votes on bills until the government is fully funded. Today is a very good day to call your members of Congress and support them. If you happen to live in Reps. Hagedorn’s, Stauber’s or Emmer’s districts, tell them to stop these shenanigans and vote to open up the government already!

Here is a nice tutorial from Indivisible that outlines the options our Senators have to resist, despite being the minority in the Senate. https://indivisible.org/…/%E2%80%9Ci-object%E2%80%9D%E2%80%…
Trump is now considering declaring a state of national emergency that will allow him to circumnavigate congress and use the Department of Defense budget to get his wall built.

Trump is planning on going on major network television stations tonight to make a case for his border wall. Because of Trump’s propensity to lie, Democratic leaders are scrambling to get air time as a rebuttal to Trump’s address.
Today, you can call the major television networks and ask them to either deny Trump airtime for his propaganda, or give Democrats equal time afterwards to fact check his lies. Here is some contact information:
CNN: (404) 827-1500
ABC: (800) 230-0229
NBC: (212) 664-4444
FOX: (888) 369-4762

Cyntoia Brown
Now a little good news to cleanse your palate. Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam has granted clemency to Cyntoia Brown who at the age of 16, was sentenced to life in prison for murdering her rapist. She will be released in August after serving 15 years of her sentence. Good luck to you Ms. Brown! https://www.wkrn.com/…/gov-haslam-grants-clemen…/1690230102…

Welcome Governor Walz!
Former Congressman Tim Walz was sworn in as Minnesota’s governor yesterday. He has committed to bringing our state together as “One Minneosta”. His goals are improving education (yay!), and healthcare, and building a stronger community across the state. Best of luck to you Governor Walz!

Say Hello to your MOCs
From Rogan’s List: Jennifer Fisher of Postcards for America suggests we write a congratulatory postcard to our new government officials at both state and national levels - introducing ourselves and letting them know we are watching. A Postcarder in Michigan who did so got a call of thanks from the new Governor Gretchen Whitmer, and not from a staffer, but the Governor herself. We can use this site find contact informative for our elected officials: https://www.usa.gov/elected-officials.
Celebrating Good
I am sure you have seen the little boxes planted outside of homes and businesses that serve as lending libraries for the community. (I have one!) The concept of Little Free Libraries was created by Tom Bol from Hudson, Wisconsin. In just a few years, Bol’s idea to share the gift of reading with our communities has become widely popular. Little Free Libraries can be found all over the world. Unfortunately, Tom Bol lost his life to cancer this past October. To celebrate his life, Bol’s family has created a foundation in his honor, Share with Others. Read more about Tom Bol here: https://www.twincities.com/…/new-organization-forms-in-ho…/… and check out the foundation’s website http://www.sharewithothers.net/
The Bol family invites the community to the Share With Others headquarters in downtown Stillwater from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, to talk about the new venture. The headquarters are at 233 Second St., at the corner of Olive and Second. The entrance is on Olive.
