Monday 1/28 Call to Action

Monday

I'm probably going to be spending well over an hour in the car Monday morning, so here this is today.  The whole federal government is opening again this week.  It might take the IRS as long as a year to recover.

I am still getting up to speed on the situation in famine-plagued Venezuela.  Russia and China are backing socialist Maduro's continued reign; The US, UK and much of Latin America back Juan Guaido as an interim president.  The EU has called for elections within eight days, threatening to recognize Guaido if Maduro does not do so.  I'm not sure there's any specific action item, but given Trump's certain incompetence in handling any situation more complex than stiffing construction contractors, and a state department that's opening slowly, it seems wise to keep an eye on the situation.

The House passed the NATO support act, to prevent Trump from pulling the US out of NATO, and all Minnesota representatives voted for it.

Read here about the shutdown's impacts on contract workers.

"For the hundreds of thousands of people who work for private companies that support government, the future will be decided in part by how quickly federal agencies get running after the record 35-day shutdown, the fine print of contracts and the kindness of strangers."

And we can express our appreciation to Minnesota's Senator Smith, who has quietly introduced a bill to ensure federal contractors do, indeed, get paid.
