Friday 1/4 Call to Action

Friday January 4th
Yesterday the 116th Congress was sworn in to office. This new set of legislators (at least half of them anyways) is the best reflection of America that has ever served since the beginning of this country. Yesterday was a very good day.

Nancy Pelosi reclaimed her spot as speaker of the House. I think she is going to give Trump a run for his money. https://www.washingtonpost.com/…/33311944-0f99-11e9-831f-3a…
The members of the House got right to work last night and passed a package of bills designed to reopen the federal government without paying for Trump’s wall. One bill was a package of six spending bills that were negotiated on a bipartisan basis in the Senate and would reopen nearly all the federal agencies that have been shuttered since Dec. 22, and the second was a stopgap spending bill through Feb. 8 covering only the Department of Homeland Security. All the House Democrats voted for the bills and a handful of Republicans did as well. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says that he will not allow the Senate to vote for any bills that Trump will not sign, so the government is still stuck in a partial shutdown. This looks pretty bad for Trump and the GOP. Will they soon capitulate? Keep your eye on that one.

Increasing Drug Prices
An increase in prices on hundreds of drugs are expected in the next few days. This is despite Trump’s October announcement hat he would tackle this problem. Read more about it here: http://fortune.com/…/dozens-drugmakers-celebrate-new-year-…/
Our newly elected Attorney General Keith Ellison has promised to make lowering the cost of prescription drugs one of his central issues once he is in office. https://www.mprnews.org/…/ellison-to-target-drug-prices-hou…
Minnesota Legislature
Life at the Minnesota Capitol building will whir back to life over the next few weeks. Let’s hope for a more productive legislative session this year. Check out this video that gives an overview of who will be leading the charge. (Thanks for this video S. I.) https://www.youtube.com/watch…
Starting on January 9th, the new DFL majority in the Minnesota House will focus on 10 bills that they hope to get passed quickly. The bills will focus on affordable health care, education, sick and family time, and infrastructure. Celebrating Good
I am sure you have seen the little boxes planted outside of homes and businesses that serve as lending libraries for the community. (I have one!) The concept of Little Free Libraries was created by Tom Bol from Hudson, Wisconsin. In just a few years, Bol’s idea to share the gift of reading with our communities has become widely popular. Little Free Libraries can be found all over the world. Unfortunately, Tom Bol lost his life to cancer this past October. To celebrate his life, Bol’s family has created a foundation in his honor, Share with Others.
Read more about Tom Bol here: https://www.twincities.com/…/new-organization-forms-in-ho…/…
Check out the foundation’s website http://www.sharewithothers.net/
The Bol family invites the community to the Share With Others headquarters in downtown Stillwater from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, to talk about the new venture. The headquarters are at 233 Second St., at the corner of Olive and Second. The entrance is on Olive.
Governor-elect Tim Walz will be having an inaugural celebration on Friday, January 11th in Mankato. Go here for more information- https://www.facebook.com/events/304461390194818/
Joy Reid will host a town hall with Nancy Pelosi on @MSNBC Friday, January 4th at 9 pm.
