Thursday 1/24 Call to Action

Thursday 1/24

It takes a special level of cruelty to keep this shutdown going. Mitch McConnell has blocked a FOURTH bill to reopen the government. Senator Tim Kaine asked to take up a House-passed bill that would fund every agency and department impacted by the shutdown, except DHS, and McConnell objected, again. Continue to call Senators Klobuchar and Smith telling them we want the government reopened with no funding for a border wall.

John Kelly and four former Department of Homeland secretaries have written a letter to Trump and to Congress urging the two sides to restore funding to the agency to ensure that "critical national security functions continue without compromise."

“We have a growing concern for the safety and security of our members, our airlines, and the traveling public due to the government shutdown. This is already the longest government shutdown in the history of the United States and there is no end in sight. In our risk averse industry, we cannot even calculate the level of risk currently at play, nor predict the point at which the entire system will break. It is unprecedented.””

The University of MN is losing $500K a day to make up for the lack of federal funding, disrupting important research.

Support ERAMN and pack the House! If approved, ERA bill (H.F. 13) would put an equal rights amendment on the ballot in MN in November 2020. It would amend the state constitution to read, “Equality under the law shall not be abridged or denied on account of gender.” This amendment would take effect January 1, 2021, if rectified. Check out more details here.

7 million people have lost insurance under Trump.
“During the fourth quarter of 2018, 14 percent of Americans were uninsured. That’s up from 11 percent at the end of 2016, and the increase has been steady over the months since then, according to the latest figures from the Gallup National Health and Well-Being Index, released Wednesday. Women, people who earn less than $48,000 a year and adults younger than 35 saw the highest increases in the uninsured rate.”

The number of missing or murdered indigenous women is heartbreaking. Urge your local MoC to support H.F. 70.
