Tueaday 7/18 Call to Action

Tuesday
1. Goodbye BCRA?
Perhaps you were out to dinner last night and missed the news. Senators Mike Lee and Jerry Moran made a simultaneous announcement that they would not support the Senate version of the healthcare bill, effectively putting an end to any hopes of its passing. Feel free to take a moment to do a little happy dance….
Okay, like a zombie from The Walking Dead, the healthcare debacle trudges on. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is now considering Trump’s suggestion of simply repealing the ACA with the promise of replacing it with something grand in two year’s time. Since three of the four senators who opposed the BCRA did it because the bill didn’t go far enough to repeal Obamacare, we should still be concerned.
Minnesota’s senators are fighting the good fight to protect Minnesotans. The same cannot be said for Reps. Emmer, Pausen, and Lewis. Today, Indivisible Guide is leading a nationwide #KillTheBill event. If these guys belong to you, do your part and call or visit to give them a piece of your mind. The rest of you can call your representative and senators and give them a telephone high five for being awesome.

2, House Budget Blueprint Blues
The House Budget Committee released its budget blueprint yesterday. The committee will vote on it on Thursday and they are incorporating reconciliation into the plan to prevent Senate Democrats from blocking the bill.
The blueprint proposes $621 billion in defense spending and will include money for Trump’s border wall.
There will be $203 billion reduction in spending for social safety net programs. It will also require work requirements for food stamps, and changes to Medicare.
It assumes $204 billion in deficit reduction from the passage of the AHCA/BCRA bill. (Oops! That didn’t happen, did it?)
There will be significant rollback in financial industry regulations.
Congressional District 2 people, your very own Jason Lewis is on this committee. I am sure he would appreciate a call from you. Ask him for a town hall while you have him on the line.

3. Elections Assistance Commission
Our current administration reports that it is gravely concerned about voter fraud. Why then are they attempting to do away with the only federal agency whose job it is to secure the voting process? (Hint: Perhaps they are using the “concern” over voter fraud as a way to suppress voters?) The Elections Assistance Commission helps to train local officials how to recruit poll workers and spot potential vulnerabilities in voting systems. HR 634 Election Assistance Commission Termination Act (https://www.congress.gov/…/115th-congre…/house-bill/634/text) will defund the EAC. This comes at a time when we are woefully behind investigating Russia’s interference in our 2016 elections. How despicable that our GOP representatives support this nonsense. Give them a call and tel them you want the EAC to stay.
