Thursday 7/13 Call to Action

Thursday
1. Russia Sanctions
In a nearly unanimous vote, the Senate agreed on sanctions against Russia. Now that the bill in in the House it has stalled. Why? Trump complains that Congress’ efforts to apply sanctions to Russia stifles his presidential power.

That’s crazy talk! The House needs to get it together. Every day that they delay gives Russia the opportunity to do more damage. Today is a good day to call your representative and let him/her know that this bill needs to pass ASAP.

Want to let Trump know how you feel about this? Here you go: The White House, 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, NW, Washington, DC 20500 or https://www.whitehouse.gov/contact
2. Education
Since taking over the Department of Education, Betsy DeVos has been busy rolling back important protections for students and siding with predatory companies that have a reputation of scamming. Currently, DeVos is trying to go back on rules set up by the Obama administration that would protect students from the predatory actions of for-profit schools. The Borrower Defense to Repayment Rules forbid schools from forcing students to sign agreements that would waive their right to sue. These rules would make it easier for students to have loans forgiven in the event that the school does not provide the type of education promised. (Think Minnesota School of Business/ Globe and the Criminal Justice degree https://www.mprnews.org/…/students-hurt-globe-university-mn…). The important part of the rule is that schools and not taxpayers would be responsible for the cost of the loan refund.
Attorneys general from great states like Minnesota have joined a lawsuit against DeVos for delaying the implementation of the Borrower Defense to Repayment Rule. The lawsuit claims that DeVos failed to take the legally required steps to properly delay an already established rule.

Feel free to call your member of Congress and ask them how they feel about this rule.
In related news, this craziness is happening:
A recent Pew Research study shows that the majority of GOP members feel that colleges are bad for the country. http://www.newsweek.com/republicans-believe-college-educati… Let’s tell our MoCs that we value education and want all of our citizens to have access to affordable education – for the good of our country!
3. The Wall
Ugh. Can we talk about $1.6 billion being set aside for Trump’s wall? This comes at the same time as the GOP touts the importance of decreasing spending and the deficit. I just don’t get it. Maybe our representatives can help explain. Give them a call! FYI, Rep. Betty McCollum is on the Appropriations Committee.
