Wednesday 7/12 Call to Action

Wednesday
1. Health Care
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell cannot muster enough votes to pass his dumpy BCRA healthcare bill. Thanks to resisters like you, senators got a real sense of how distasteful this bill was to their constituents over the 4th of July break. The GOP has accomplished so little so far, despite having majorities in the Senate and the House. Of course, McConnell is blaming the Democrats for not cooperating but that argument seems pretty flimsy. In what appears to be part punishment and part attempt to pass any substantive legislation, McConnell has extended the legislative session by two weeks in August, cutting into the Senate’s month long August recess.

The good news is that our efforts to stop this bill are working! The disability rights organization ADAPT has done some amazing protests. They are an amazing group! https://youtu.be/d-UrOR_ulog
The bad news is that we will have to keep fighting to keep this horrible bill from passing. Today, call Senators Klobuchar and Franken and thank them for sacrificing their August recess to save our healthcare. Tell them to keep fighting for us.
2. FBI Director Hearings
Christopher Wray is Trump’s nominee for F.B.I. director. He will begin hearings today with the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Mr Wray was a former federal prosecutor in President George W. Bush’s administration during the time of the 9/11 attacks and most recently a criminal defense lawyer in New York.
In light of the crazy current events, the questions during this hearing should be pretty interesting.
How will Wray react if the president invites him to dinner?
What is his stance on torture?
What does he think about Trump Jr’s emails?
What’s his stance on leakers?
Remember, both Sens. Klobuchar and Franken are on the Judiciary Committee so give them a call if you have a specific question you would like them to ask Mr. Wray.
3. Naughty Donald Jr.
By now, I am sure we have all heard the news of how Donald Trump Jr. (and Jared Kushner and Paul Manafort) met with a Russian lawyer last June, hoping to obtain incriminating information about Hillary Clinton.
Since Trump Jr. tweeted out the emails himself yesterday, you would think this would be slam dunk proof of Russia’s involvement in the 2016 elections. The GOP is working hard to spin this news to take the pressure off of the Trump family. They are claiming that there was no harm, since the information the Russian lawyer had was not useful to the Trumps.
Senator Chuck Grassley is pushing an angle that the attorney, Natalia Veselnitskaya was not allowed to be in the U.S. at the time of the meeting. I am not sure how that invalidates the actions of Trump Jr., but I would expect to hear more about that in the coming weeks.
Here’s a little background on Natalia Veselnitskaya:https://www.nytimes.com/…/natalia-veselnitskaya-donald-trum…
Here’s a good clip about this from The Rachel Maddow Show: Trump Jr collusion admission leaves Kushner exposed http://www.msnbc.com/…/trump-jr-collusion-admission-leaves-… via @msnbc
Sen. Grassley is on the Judiciary Committee with Klobuchar and Franken. I wonder if he will ask some questions about this during the Wray hearings today? Call our senators and let them know you want Grassley to stop this nonsense. We need leaders from both sides of the aisle standing up against this. If you have a GOP member of Congress, feel free to call, tweet or email them as well. Rep. Lewis has been awfully quiet about Russia in general. (He has a lot to say about drones though.) It’s time MoC’s speak out too!
You could ask your MoC why they would weaken sanctions against Russia too.
