Friday 7/21 Call to Action

Friday
1. Attorney General Sessions is having a tough week. Once in the fold of Trump’s inner circle, Sessions’ recusal from the Comey investigation has soured their relationship. During a New York Times interview, Trump had some not so nice things to say about Sessions. In normal times, negative statements like these from the President of the United States would be enough to cause an Attorney General to resign his post. As we have all learned in these past six months, these are not normal times. Scrappy AG Sessions is going to keep on trucking, deporting individuals, punishing sanctuary cities, re-energizing the war on drugs, and seizing property from individuals.
Let’s focus on Sessions’ plan to expand civil asset forfeiture, a fancy word for allowing law enforcement to take property from individuals to sell or to keep for themselves. Law enforcement can do this by claiming that the property is related to a crime regardless of whether or not this is true. It is crazy to me that this could happen in the United States! Yet, AG Sessions has announced that he would like to expand the practice. Vile. Read more here: https://www.theatlantic.com/…/jeff-sessions-treads-…/533979/
The craziest part about this is that limiting civil asset forfeiture has historically been a big conservative talking point. Nothing in this government makes sense anymore.
Today, make a call to your member of Congress and tell them that expanding civil asset forfeiture is a terrible idea. Feeling extra feisty? Contact the Department of Justice too. 202-353-1555 U.S. Department of Justice 950 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20530-0001
2. The House Appropriations commission passed their spending bill which includes almost $1.6 billion for Trump’s famous border wall (that Mexico will pay for). Ugh! GOP, stop cutting funding for programs that help the poor and elderly and quit throwing good money at this terrible wall!
The good news is, Democrats have vowed to fight against any money going towards funding the border wall. As much as they hate to admit it, the GOP needs cooperation from the Democrats to pass any major government spending bills. Let’s remind our members of Congress that spending money on Trump’s wall is an awful idea.
Trump seems eager to allow a government shutdown if he doesn’t get the things he wants. Will the GOP comply or will they bow to pressure? Let’s make sure they get lots of pressure from us. Our government should be able to work across the aisle and compromise to make a spending budget on time.
