Wednesday 7/5 Call to Action

Wednesday
I hope everyone is feeling good today and your dogs are not too stressed out from the fireworks.
Our senators and representatives are home from Washington this week. Many of them marched in 4th of July parades yesterday. There was one exception: Rep. Erik Paulsen was absent from the Edina parade even though he was listed on the program as scheduled to march. Paulsen’s office offered a variety of excuses for his absence-he was at a family reunion, -this was an “off year” and he wasn’t planning on marching. I think the real reason is probably that he was feeling the pressure from resistance groups. In fact, the CD3 Indivisible group happily filled his spot in the parade. Representative Jason Lewis is a sneaky bugger and marched in the Eagan and Apple Valley parades with little to no advanced notice. It is only a matter of time before resisters catch up to him too.
I think a lot of our elected officials are used to sliding along with little input from their constituents. They do not know how to react to the public outcry they are experiencing. I hope this inspires you to continue pushing forward. We really do have power to influence if we work together!

This article explains that this is not just a local phenomenon. https://www.nytimes.com/…/senate-republicans-lay-low-on-the…
1. BCRA (that pesky healthcare bill)
Despite low approval ratings and a large unified public outcry against it, the GOP Senate is still working to push through their version of the healthcare bill. In order to appease the most conservative members of the Senate, the bill is quickly morphing into a very cruel and inhumane bill.
Senator Ted Cruz has proposed a healthcare amendment that would create two types of plans. A “high risk” Obamacare style plan that covers all health conditions and a “low risk” plan that would cover fewer things. This set up would lead to the sickest members of communities picking the comprehensive plan and consequently, exorbitantly high premiums for this group. You can read more about it here: https://www.forbes.com/…/senator-cruzs-healthcare-reform-…/…
Remember, the BCRA also wants to make deep cuts into Medicaid funding. Learn more about Medicaid in this really helpful article.

2. Voter Suppression
Remember last week when Kansas Secretary of State and vice chairman of the Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity, Kris Kobach requested personal information from registered voters in all 50 states? Thankfully, Minnesota’s Secretary of State Simon (and many other Secretaries of State) said no to that crazy request.
This is the beginning of a new movement from the Trump administration to tackle illegal voting in the United States. Keep in mind, there is NO evidence of substantive illegal voting in our elections. The Trump administration is using the “voter fraud” excuse to disenfranchise and suppress voting in America.
The personal information garnered from this request can be used to crosscheck voters across states and can incorrectly deny the right to vote to many citizens.
Mr. Kobach also has plans to suppress voter registration by requiring voters to supply citizenship documents and birth certificates to register.

Pair that with the fact that the Election Assistance Commission is in jeopardy and extreme gerrymandering and you get a recipe for some serious voter suppression.

Feel free to call you representatives and let them know you are against these suppression tactics.
Finally, I would like to share an article with you that resonated with me. This is written by Bruce Bartlett a former Republican and now Independent on the problems he sees in with the Democratic party. He argues that instead of constantly rebutting Trump’s lies and the craziness of the GOP, Democrats need to start talking about their own tenets. As citizens, we need to encourage our Democrat leaders to step away from their defensive stance and start talking about how they will fix the problems in America. What do you think?

As Donald Trump and Kris Kobach (co-chair of his trumped-up commission on election fraud) cook up new ways to make it harder to vote, our video explains how restrictive laws enacted across the country have already hurt voting rights.
